Easy DIY Running Board Lights On Ford F-150's

This is a easy DIY running board lights install on our F-150. Just a couple of supplies and and a little time and you will have an awesome look not to mention very helpful and safer also. We took our running boards off but it will work either way. If you guys have any question just leave them in the comments section we get to them all. Below is a guideline for wiring and wire colors for different year Ford Trucks. Use as a guideline only. We recommend using a multimeter to check for proper wire selection. 2009 - 2010
Driver Front & Rear - Gray/Violet is the hot wire. Black/Violet is the ground wire.
Passenger Front & Rear - White is the hot wire. Black/Yellow is the ground wire.
2011 - 2012
Driver Front - Solid Purple is the hot wire. Solid Black is the ground wire.
Driver Rear - Solid Purple is the hot wire. Black/Yellow is the ground wire.
Passenger Front & Rear - Solid Purple is the hot wire. Black/Yellow is the ground wire.
2013
Driver Front - Thin Yellow/Green is the hot wire. Thin solid Black is the ground wire.
Driver Rear - Thin Yellow/Green is the hot wire. Thin Black/Yellow is the ground wire
Passenger Front & Rear - Thin Yellow/Green is the hot wire. Thin Black/Yellow is the ground wire
2014
Driver Front - Thin solid Purple is the hot wire. Thin solid Black is the ground wire.
Driver Rear - Thin solid Purple is the hot wire. Thin Black/Yellow is the ground wire
Passenger Front & Rear - Thin solid Purple is the hot wire. Thin Black/Yellow is the ground
2015 - 2017
Connections are under the rear passenger door sill plate
Gray/Violet stripe is the power wire. Black/Yellow is the ground wire.
You can also connect at the passenger side fuse box which is under the glove box. 10 Amp Fuse in fuse location 1

GREAT VIDEO! & excellent guidance on the wire configurations for 2009 F-150, ONLY tidbit is there were more than one GREY/VIOLET in my Driver side front harness. One very thick wire (NOT IT) and one very thin wire (THAT'S IT). Of course I chose poorly at first but recovered shortly therafter. I didn't have to drill either, there was a grommet in the harness channel by the rear door that easily allowed me to wedge the wire into it. Might have to revisit this grommet at a later date to ensure all is still holding well. Also, doing this on a Supercab so I'm procrastinating running the wire to passenger side until I can get the seatback out. That may actually be more frustarting then installing/wiring the lights!

Thanks for your comment. Yeah! The wiring configurations change depending on the year, most tof the time the one we said is correct but there are either years where the wire one we were saying isn't even in the wire harness. It can be tricky, that is for sure.

Amazing! Yeah this one is a 2017 as well. I love the truck, I just wish the box was 6.75 ft. Besides that, it's been great. Trying to find a cap for it at the moment :)

I have 2019 and they only turn on when opening the door, not when unlocking with fob. Used black/yellow ground and grey/purple power. Can't figure why they won't come on when unlocking.

Great Video, Did you guys have any codes thrown from tapping in to the harness? mine threw an ambient temp sensor code as well as a cabin heater coolant pump code....

Hi man, i got a question, i have a 2013 f150 xlt and it has just One hot wire in One side (driver side front and rear) where is the hot wire in the passenger side or this side have another color code?

If you turn the dome lights on from the inside buttons, will they still come on? Or are those wires specifically for the open door function?

These wires are specifically only when opening a door. The dome light button will not turn them on.

Wouldn't know off hand. I'll do some looking and see if I stumble upon it. Best bet is to try to find the specific wire diagram for your year and model.

Do your LED running board lights come on when you manually turn on your interior courtesy light with the switch or do the wires you tapped into activate only with the door pin switches? Thanks

These lights will only come on when you open the door. It will also light up when you unlock your door. Manually activating the interior lights will not turn on the lights the way we wired it.

I suppose you could, you would just have to see if the map lights runs off it's own fuse so you could tap it. Let me know if you figure it out. It would be great info to have.

I got mine all setup but I've obviously tapped the wrong wires. Are you sure the wiring info for the 2017 is correct? The lights flash when I touch the door and it unlocks for a brief second. Must have hit the wrong power wire.

The wires I choose are what was required for the 2017 f150 xlt. You should be good with the 2017. Just take a double look and see if you got the right one. They are small so it is possible to miss or mix up.

I obviously tapped the wrong power wire the first time. Would you leave the wire tap connector on or tey and take it off and solder the wire somehow? They are so tight.

@@needabuzz if you think it's going to be to hard to fix you can leave the tap in there. Just black tape it and you should be good to go.

Not going to know offhand. I know the 2020's and newer are different colors so there is a chance the 2018 may have the same colors for the wires. Although you may have to look at a wiring diagram if you come to do it and you can't find the wires.

What size drill bit did you all use?

Been awhile, so we don't remember the exact size off hand. But as small as you can go to get the wire through is ideal. Just be sure that the wire has some type of sheathing so it doesn't cut the wire from vibration.

You'll want to check the wire diagram and make sure that from 2017 to 2021 that they didn't change the wire color. It sounds like one of the wires you used is not linked to the Map lights so it's staying on continously.

UPDATE! i have figured it out, its on the DRIVER side (not on the passenger) Grey wire with a violet strip for power Black wire with a purple strip for ground
