I bought some bees wax (didn’t want to risk getting any paraffin wax into water) and covered my paddles and I was so delighted!! Works like a charm! Way better than any drip/splash ring I’ve ever come across. Just what I needed to keep my mini doxies dry when they kayak with me. EDIT: so, update, the wax is still on my paddle but the water-shedding qualities have disappeared. I got about an hour into paddling and it was dripping all over me as if I had never treated it. Guess drip rings are still needed.

Why is it bad getting paraffin wax in water????
@drivingmissmolly Жыл бұрын
@@DGNG-dd3to it contains carcinogens like toluene and benzene, and is considered harmful to to environment.
@Joe-bh4vz3 ай бұрын
@@drivingmissmolly, paraffin wax does not contain toluene and benzene. It’s pure CnH2n+2. Solvents are used to make paraffin wax from slack wax, a mixture of crude oil and paraffin wax, ketone is most commonly used solvent. The solvent separates the oil from the paraffin. It then crystallizes forming pure paraffin wax, with some remaining solvent. Then it is distilled to completely remove and recover the solvent so it can be reused. The solvent gets completely vaporized out of the paraffin wax by heat. What remains is pure paraffin wax which has zero trace of any solvents remaining in it.

If anyone is tempted to buy some expensive looking beeswax, just buy some surfboard wax. It's less than 15 bucks for a 3 pack. Likely plenty for a while and more to share with friends if they don't know the trick. Shouldn't be any issues with salt water because duh. Nor effecting the ecology of wherever you're paddling, hopefully.

Tried it with bees wax on a carbon-carbon paddle. I found out the best way is to either let them heat up in the sun or use a hair dryer and slightly melt the wax after it was applied. Afterwards rub it in with a cloth and it'll become invisible. Works perfectly, even in seawater!

Just learned about super-fast duct-tape hack - piece of tape on underside to drain water. Wax is elegant and simple solution to *prevent* the problem, as does Rustoleum NeverWet 2-part spray treatment.

I'm going to test using water proofing sprays meant for sealing tents and jackets. Seems like it would have the same qualities, and possibly last longer.. or shorter.. idk yet

Yes but the oils and dyes may stain your gear or hands, including the scents, which could actually give you a rash or something dumb like that.

How long does it last before you have to rewax
@gettingoutdoors2564 жыл бұрын
That depends on the weather. If it’s a hot day up in the 80s or 90s and your baking out in the sun your probably going to need to do it every day your out. But if you’re in colder waters it can last weeks at a time.

@abbycottington88903 жыл бұрын
I was going to ask the same thing, I’m sure there’s a genius answer just like waxing paddles. Brilliant!
@Pancakes4Handshakes3 жыл бұрын
@@abbycottington8890 90% sure that the more 'expensive/nicer' paddles come that way for fishing and the notch can be used to grab the fishing line if it is stuck in a tree or bush. From what I can tell is most people aren't a fan of it because it also collects algae and lily pads while paddling. But those paddles usually come with a built in measuring ruler which is very handy!
