You sir are a legend! I’ve been enduring a creaking tailgate in my E70 for a couple of years. Tried all sorts of adjustments but never new about these hidden little gems. A few turns of a 5mm socket and my blissful Zen-like car interior has returned. Thanks for posting 👍

I'm sorry to disagree , but the rattling is because it is loose, take a 1/2 wrench and tighten those bolts and your problem disappear. no need to adjust any bumpers.
@jcx2bby2 жыл бұрын
@@figeri what bolts are you referring to? And sorry to disagree, but these bumpers would not have an adjustable feature if they were not meant to be adjusted.

@@jcx2bby the two bolts holding the latch should not be loose, once you tighten those bolts your problem disappear (15 seconds into the video)
@jcx2bby2 жыл бұрын
@@figeri sir, those bolts were not loose. The mechanism itself has play in it which can not be adjusted. As I mentioned in this video, I have another video up that shows where I took the entire tailgate apart and tried to solve that rattling mechanism. It can't be done without replacing a very expensive part and even then there's no guarantee. The solution for me and for most others who have watched this video is to adjust the bump stops. There would not be an adjustment possible on the bump stops if there was not a reason to make them adjustable. This is how you solve the rattling tailgate on this series of vehicle

Thank you!!! I just bought a pristine 2012 E70 with 69k miles on it. The rattling glass/tailgate noise was driving me nuts though. Seemed to only happen when I hit bumps at low speed. 5mm socket hand driver, 10 minutes later and it's silent. Restored to the German precision feel it was meant to have!

Thank you, that was most helpful. What I did was had the tailgate opened, dialed the bump stop to the lowest setting, then closed the tailgate. Then from the inside, turn the bump stop back out until I feel resistance. Tighten the lock nut. That worked and you are a legend!

Thank you for posting this my man. What would you recommend for suspension refresh for E70 w/o air suspension? I want firm/sporty but compliant ride.
@jcx2bby2 жыл бұрын
If your shocks are original, I'd start by replacing with Bilsteins. I'm not much for lowering SUVs, but I'm sure there are lowering springs available. That will increase handling and firmness but probably make it harsh.
@SanjayJosephPT Жыл бұрын
@@jcx2bbyI used a company called Strutmonkey. You can find them by googling online. They ask you to fill out their online questionnaire and they’ll send you some recommendations. I opted for stock Sachs shocks with the Eibach lowering springs. It lowered the front by about 1.5” and the rear about 1”. The ride is butter smooth and handles great. The funny thing is that I thought the freaking sound was coming from my 86K mile shocks. Alas, it wasn’t. lol. Still, the shocks were done and I know because I can’t believe how nice the X5 rides now. Now, wish me luck to see if this fix works for me.

Just an FYI for those who try this: do not leave the keys within the confines of the cabin as the hatch will close and reopen every time😩 I adjusted the stops with the door open and every time i closed the door it would just reopen. I tried all kinds of settings from min to max, all to no avail.

Wait this is not true. There should be no rattle. I just fixed mine with this issue. 1. Make sure all bolts are tightened down. 2. If rattle still exists, take out the center bottom d latch. 3. If you remove it, you can actually take off the metal cover, exposing the cam lock mechanism. 4. For me, I was able to use a plastic straw to shimmy the d latch up and take out all play. 5. Some extra grease and reassembly and it took care of all my rattles My issue with adjusting the bump stops is you're extending out the tailgate or at least mine was. i wanted a perfectly flush fit and taking slack out the center rear d latch was better than moving outwards the bumpstops.
@jcx2bby3 жыл бұрын
Well, I agree there should be no rattle. And my method is 'true', although there is more than one way to fix the problem. My tailgate didn't extend out, although I can see that it would if you extended the stops out too far. Adjusting the stops is FAR easier than the method you outline, much quicker, and can be accomplished by anyone. Taking that tailgate apart and getting into the lock and shimming it up are more than 95% of folks who own this car will want to do, or be able to do. Not saying you're wrong in any way, but there is a diminishing point of return to that method.
