EASY - Get usernames and password with Wireshark - Packet sniffing tutorial 2019 [Free]

I should clear up some stuff about this video: I kinda over exaggerated what Cookies are. I didn't really describe them properly, they're essentially small bits of data sent from a website and they're supposed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember information or to record the users browsing activity. That's the definition of a cookie. Another thing, don't worry! This is a really basic level pen testing demonstration, and this doesn't portray how vulnerable we are on the internet. The internet will never really be an ultra-safe environment, but it's not like it's this simple to hack an account on every website ever. I'll be including some better information in future videos (thats if anyone would want me to make some). This actual process on this tutorial still works provided you use a HTTP site over a HTTPS, and you can still follow it at home. I just want to apologise for any misinformation I included back then. Lol a cookie is data that a site stores on your browser mainly to identify who you’re, for example logging in checking if you have this cookie. However secure sites use sessions as cookies can be manipulated, potentially could hack to gain information into other places, or accounts... cookies are harmless, but yet not secure for storing data.

You needn't worry. This can only happen when you are in public wifi or otherwise untrusted network. And when you look at the url address of a browser it has things like and https is secure and is not vulnerable for this kind of attack. It uses strong encryption to keep your password and username from being visible.

@@johnh5358 Yeah! Let's attack it bit by bit: So, HTTP is a type of protocol. request.method.method will help us slim down the search later on. Bear with me == is a programming operator. Two equal signs means to compare a state. So for example, YouShouldSubscribe == True 'POST' is the cherry on the cake. So using the request.method,post thing from earlier, we have slimmed down the search for HTTP packets that have requested to POST (or send) data across the network, rather than looking at every HTTP packet that was captured. If wireshark doesn’t display a network then, it’s because it can’t detect it. It could be a limitation of you NIC card (Network Interface Card), otherwise try reinstalling the software :)

This method is practically obsolete now since majority of the websites you browse today have moved over to HTTPS. The ones that aren't are flagged by your browser as insecure. However, its still great to understand the theory behind it.

Pretty much, yeah. Unless you either: Avoid use of public internet connections all together OR Use a VPN (virtual private network) to secure all your data whilst using a risky connection

basically what solo said, HTTP is an insecure protocol which allows others to just snag your data right out from under your nose allowing them to see you login information so i recommend you just use a vpn like nord. Most ethical hackers are actually hired by big companies so they can find vulnerabilities in their systems, servers, etc. So before jumping to conclusions that all hackers are out to get you just think that some people hack to protect you from such attacks such as data sniffing.

Not necessarily cause https is only when data is in transit what about the data at rest. What about when https connection is terminated. So additional cryptographic techniques are used on your data + https and IPSec make it some what safer

I am probably doing something wrong but tried this on my home network and the only time it works is when I do it from the computer that I have Wireshark on. I tried it from my second computer, phone, nothing works except the pc that has Wireshark running in the background. So I can't see any information at all regarding other devices than the Wireshark computer. Edit: Is this due to the fact that my network is protected? And does this work with more websites than the http ones? Since I barely see any http websites nowadays, so I feel like it isn't really effective.

@@chancendahmer226 yes if you were doing this, you can see other people's usernames and passwords who are on the same network as you. Imagine you're in a work building for example where lots of people are on the same network. You might see a lot of other people's credentials. But SSL/TLS makes all of this encrypted and in readable. That's why most modern websites have "" next to it. That means the traffic is encrypted and this kind of thing won't work with those websites.

Nice tutorial video. Like the title on the video it is indeed easy to understand & implement however I have a slight disagreement when u said Wireshark can't be used to capture a Https Traffic. It certainly can. It's not an easy process thou but that does not make it impossible too. In order for Wireshark to decrypt a SSL & TLS captured traffics you need a 'Pre-Mastered Key' & configuring it in ur Wireshark. I know it's not an easy process, especially on getting the Pre-Master Secret Key but again if u have the passion you can always be able to do it.

You can also spoof your mac address to someone who already has access to the password wifi network you can fool your mac to there's and get free wifi access. I've done this with kali Linux couple times to get free illegal access need to be sure to use your VPN while doing this.

The title is misleading. This doesn't work 95% of the time as almost every website now require a digital certificate. You'll notice in the video right beside the URL on each of the webpages its says "Not Secure" that means there isn't a Digital Certificate being used. Nice demo thought.

Sorry for taking so long! http.request.method finds all the HTTP requests made on your network during the time frame in which Wireshark was capturing packets. The == is a programming thing which means to compare, and "POST" narrows it down to packets that have been sent out, instead of ones that have been received. So in short, it pretty much just mean "find me all HTTP requests that have been sent"
