Wow - excellent & tiring job! Well done. One point I noticed was that you appear to have put the bubbles on the inside on the Greenhouse with the smooth surface on the greenhouse glass... I think this may be wrong since in the non-bubbled area where the insulation touches the glass, there will be effectively no air-gap. However, if you do it the other way round i.e. if the bubbles are on the side of the glass, then they raise the smooth surface away from the glass creating additional airpockets. That way, you have air-pockets & true double-glazing effect. I hope this helps!

Hi there. You may be right about the direction of the bubbles for helping insulation. It is of course easier to insert the clips, without bursting bubbles, when the bubblewrap is flat against the glass. I'll give it a go the other way round next autumn.

Useful to see what you’ve done Rachel….my lesson learnt is to do mine earlier in 2024. Didn’t get to do my GH till late November & then the tape wouldn’t stick! As was cold & probably a bit damp. My GH is very old so only has slots in the frame for the clips in the middle of the sides & ends…nothing at the corners, so I have to try & use bamboo sticks cut to size… not always good for the whole winter 😢 My 6 x 8 GH took me 4-5 hours to do as a result. But need it for citrus & tender salvias which I ❤

I know what you mean. I like to bubblewrap my greenhouse earlier to avoid damage of my plants. For me it means taking all the plants out and washing the glass. Leaving dormant exotic bulbs out where it might rain is an issue so best done when the weather is kinder. Besides, no one likes to face this kind of job in November. The disadvantage of doing it earlier is that you reduce light earlier and air circulation because the windows can no longer be opened. What a pain about your corners and, yes, tape is always an issue when it gets wet. And it does get wet here as the bubblewrap on the door is mostly taped. My husband found gaffer tape this year, which seems to be holding better. Bet you're glad that jobs behind you, as I am!

Plastic gallon jugs (milk type) filled with water sitting along a sunny side of the greenhouse wil! absorb the solar heat in the day and release the heat at night.

We just covered ours for the BC Interior, we have very cold winters and a smaller greenhouse with citrus trees etc inside. My husband built a T P so 2 vents can open if it is warm and the 3 layers of plast first clear than bubble and than clear go over the green house on warm days heat goes into the under layers of the plastic. We also have hard core insulation 1/2 way up outside and we have one layer of plastic inside just on sides. I understand the massive job you have, we are in our 70's and have a pattern figured but hate the job. It will be about 6 months before it can come off. Carolyn

Note to Sam - when the bubble-wrap arrives, HIDE!!! (You're wasting good bass practice time). I only did this once and yes, everything out (plants and shelves etc) cutting to size and pinning in place and TOTALLY 'cream-crackered' after a long day. THEN, 3 months later the reverse to take it all down again. Now-a-days, I just put up with the extra cost of keeping a minimum of 12C to avoid the hassle although I do leave the bubble-wrap in the roof year-round (as I can't be bothered to take it down). How did you resist popping the bubbles (ok, I'm a big kid!).

Can you discuss whether your bubble wrap is perforated. I would expect that one would want non-perforated, however, i have not been able to find any that is not perforated. Will perforated work? If not where can I find non-perforated bubble wrap in Canada?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 10 ай бұрын
My bubblewrap is not perforated. Unperforated is better for this job as it has more bubbles but I'm sure the perforated will work so long as the bubblewrap doesn't tear easily at the perforations. Sorry but I cannot advise where to buy anything in Canada.

An Amazon link to where you can buy the clips is pinned as a comment under this video. Good garden centres stock them too (as least here in Ireland). The bubblewrap is 1200mm x 50m but maybe you want to know how big the bubbles are. They are termed as 'large' by the seller and you may judge their size from what you see in the video. Hope this answers your questions.

Do your cement pavers on the floor help to retain heat in your greenhouse in the winter
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know that the floor slabs improve heat retention. They have other uses though, such as making a stable surface for staging and stopping the floor from turning into a mud bath at certain times of year

Would adding another layer of bubble wrap to the outside provide any added benefit? The most I have ever had to do was throw some plastic over the top of my shade house to protect the plants from the rain...

I did have a thought on that - long strips going from one side, over the top, and down the other side. That way they could be anchored into the ground with brinks or stakes. During the monsoon here - over a meter of rain can fall in 10-12 weeks...

What size bubble wrap?
@GardeningatDouentza

I don't know exactly what size bubbles I have but you should buy the bubblewrap with the largest bubbles as the more trapped air, the better the insulation value.

Can you leave this bubble rap on in the summer, will it let the light though cheers
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can leave the bubblewrap up in summer. It will reduce light but that may be a positive thing depending on where you live. The disadvantages of leaving it up are reduced ventilation and inability to properly clean the greenhouse with a build-up on débris between bubblewrap and glass. Hope this helps.

Do you have any idea how much it raises the temperature by and is this really only effective if you use a heater in it?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 3 жыл бұрын
Insulation will keep heat in so it can be used without a heater if you close your door early in winter or don't open it at all. The bubblewrap will then hold any existing heat in. How much does bublewrap raise the temperature by? Well I guess that depends on a variety of factors including bubble size, how many gaps, greenhouse size etc. The claim is that bubblewrap will increase temperature by about 2 degrees but I have no way to confirm that. Hope this helps.
@equalizingforce2581
@equalizingforce2581 3 жыл бұрын
@@GardeningatDouentza Thanks for your reply. 2 degrees? I'm not sure that would be worth the effort for me. I was really going to try and keep my pepper plants alive but the cost of running a heater would make it unviable.
