In this bluegrass guitar lesson, Hayes teaches you the Rule of Blue 3rds. You've heard many of your favorite flatpickers do this and it just might be the thing that adds some extra authenticity and character to your solos.

This Blue 3rd lesson unlocked the front door to Bluegrass. Before this I could only play G-C-D rhythm and a simple G run. The examples had me up and running in minutes... playing lines over all three chords. Thanks to 50% video speed, I have learned to play most of Solo 2 and I'm having a blast!

Great lesson! I already incorporate some of this, but there's some new stuff for me here. I've watched this 3x in a row while here at work 😊 so I can get to experimenting when I get home. Yes, Strum Machine is awesome!

@@dieselman7453 Strum Machine is an app that lets you play along with prerecorded bluegrass tunes. Our band uses it to practice in between practices. You can arrange the tunes to suit your needs.

Great lesson! Never thought of using a blue third... Seems obvious given other blue notes, but the thought of "mixing" minor and major in that regard just didn't occur.

You can also actually figure this out by ear simply by slowing down bluegrass solos on yt without knowing the name of one single note. That's how I learned it. Memorize the melody, then experiment.
