Just to add to your wonderful recipe to save a few $$$ and besides I'm sure that many of you have already found that there are wonderful misting bottles available for free when you recycle a couple of name brand cleaning products...Mr Clean and Dawn Powerwash and if you use the one in the beautiful blue bottles it can make for a really pretty addition to our quilt rooms.

I was using this method, but wanted to try sta - flo from Walmart and just liked it better I use it in my mister bottle also ,It makes the fabric stiff also if you use less water,,plus its a large container that lasts along time and I dont have to boil anything,,I just found I liked it better and around 4 dallors, its not so expensive. But try both like I did to see what you like.

Self taught I got the liquid sta-flo from Walmart. I mix half 50/50 water/starch. It's pretty yukkyy on darker colors especially black and navy. It leaves a cloudy looking mess. It's definitely a quilt that needs to be washed before gifting. I was checking out best press but it's so expensive.

Walmart also sales the very reasonable pricing Magic Sizing that has been rebranded and relabeled and also remarketed in quilting businesses. I've been using it for years.

I have heard of using the sta-flo but haven’t tried it. I will say if I don’t boil this mixture long enough (I’m not great with patience) it can leave a dusty residue on darker fabrics, but it washes right out.

I think 50/50 water/starch is probably too much. I'm going to try the 1TB starch/1 cup water as suggested in the video.

I also do 50/50 Sta-Flo to filtered (from the refrigerator) tap water. I put it in a misting bottle from MSQC but I’ve seen them on sale at other online quilting sites. I get similar results to distilled water at a significantly lower cost.

I'm a brand new subscriber and what a great first video ! Back in the day I made my own clothing starch to soak all our jeans in. When I got through, they could stand up by themselves, no kidding. We were a big a rodeo family, so starched jeans with creases was a must. Lol I made my starch with a liquid starch that was in a blue jug type container. I've gotta investigate and see if all that was was cornstarch. 🤔. Great video ! 🌺 Update: just seen another reply that had the name of what I used, Stay Flo liquid starch. 😁

I may need to give that a try then! While this mixture is low cost I do get tired of boiling it since I am not a big kitchen fan 😂 I like easy peasy and cheap which isn’t an easy combo.

Good to know about the cornstarch method! Easy and inexpensive. I've seen the recipes for using vodka, but I just don't want to buy a bottle to use a small amount. It'd make more sense to just get the spray starch.

I'm team Vodka :) with a tiny bit of essential oil -- anything but lavender. I find the cornflour clumps too much for me, heating it with more water may solve that. Thanks Fallon, have a great day :)

I have made mine for years using the sta-flo. I also add a few drops of essential oil to mine. No problems.

We’re you able to get a good scent!? Mine stayed a mild scent but didn’t affect the fabric.

@@sewbeitquilts yes because I used about 6 drops of a strong scented oil. I love the Orleans brand Southern Magnolia. It hasn’t stained or left any type of residue on my fabrics.

Best Press is so expensive! This recipe works great, but it definitely doesn't smell as good as Best Press!

There ya go! No excuses for not pre starching fabric. Corn starch is cheap.

Thanks for this Fallon. I used to use Best Press or flatter. I don’t know what corn starch is! As for vodka, I don’t have any anyway! I know my dad would’ve said,what a waste of good Vodka! I’ve actually never had a problem with fabrics being too soft. I only use best press or flatter at the end anyway😍 ❤️🇦🇺

Thank you for this recipe, but will the starch rot with water over time? Or does boiling it with water prevent it from rotting? Because one time I mixed starch with water without boiling it, and it rotted after several days.

Not sure if you know the answer to this but what if you don't plan to wash the quilt? I know that other DIY products using corn starch end up with insect infestations if they are "stored" for long periods of time. Thanks!

I would definitely only use the starch on a project I was able to wash after it is completed.

It can if I don’t boil it enough. But it doesn’t stain. It washes right off.

All corn is hybridized man made and GMO, even when it says on the label non GMO, your skin will soak up GMOs in your pours when you sweat, id highly suggests making starch in a pot with organic red skinned potatoes peeled

Do you have to keep this in the Refrigerator because it is corn base and how long do you cook it for i'm trying this method because I cannot fine the liquid storage anywhere in my area which is frustrating thsnk you

I don’t keep it in the refrigerator. It can spoil so if you are worried about that using distilled water helps and small batches if you don’t go through the starch quickly like I do. I boil until the water looks clear again. If the mixture is too thick to spray you can add more water to the bottle and shake really well. Some of the sprayers don’t work as well with thick mixtures of starch.

It only takes a few minutes. The mixture changes from cloudy to clear. That is when you know it is done.

Yes, I have made the same mixture you make but found that it really stuck to and burnt on my iron. I see that wait for it to dry, "at little bit". What is a little bit?

There are recipes to make your own. One uses flour and rubbing alcohol or vodka and another I came across used Elmer’s glue. I plan to try both to see if either will work. I agree, the 505 is really expensive for how much you have to use on each quilt.

@stephensonbenita. I’ve used hairspray. Just a light spraying. It worked well albeit it was on a smaller quilt. It didn’t gum up my needle. I sprayed basted it then quilted it straight away so I can’t say how long it would remain adhered if left for a few days before quilting. It’s worth a try😊
