How to Make Cheap Easy Wine from Store Bought Juice at Home It's actually really easy to make wine for yourself at home, and using juice from your local store is a great way to get started. This video will teach you step by step how to make grape wine at home from store bought juice.
This video is meant to be an introduction to winemaking and brewing at home. We assume you own none of the equipment necessary and don't use anything fancy in making this video. Of course there are better methods than this, however, if you want to try the hobby of brewing before investing a lot of money, this wine can be made for something like $5 or less for a half gallon. We ended up with 2 wine bottles full, so that's less than $2.50 per bottle.
Once you've tried this, and find you like making wine at home, we offer hundreds of videos on wine, mead, cider and beer on this channel. We look forward to helping you learn this amazing hobby!

* 1 Teaspoon (3.5 grams) Fleischmann's Active Dry Yeast: amzn.to/2zMYjlq (or just use half a packet if that's how yours comes)
* 64 ounces (2 quarts or 1814 grams) Grape Juice (minus a glassful)
* 1/2 pound (a little over a cup or 224 grams) Sugar

*** The refrigerator does not guarantee it won't continue to ferment if it is not finished already. You can let it sit longer before bottling to ensure it is finished or use a hydrometer to check. Also, we used a teaspoon of yeast, and those measurements are in the description :)

Buy a vinaigrette cork with a metal stem. They usually have a top flap to protect the mix. It would be a perfect release valve for out-gassing.

I buy my yeast packaged pack will do 20 lt when mines bout done I siphon into other jugs add a couple spoons sugar put poppers back on top let it finish and settle for a week and siphon again

If you are using bakers yeast, then it WILL stop fermenting. Brewers yeast is best for a higher EtOH yield. You can of course still use bread yeast as all yeast performs the same function - converting sugar to alcohol - but your wine will likely have a much lower alcohol content than normal. The yeast best suited for baking has a lower alcohol tolerance, so it will stop fermenting after alcohol levels reach about 8%.

The rants exist due to the sheer volume of questions we receive about “why did this happen to my brew?” And the answer being, “something got in because you didn’t use an airlock”

I honestly appreciate that he explains all the processes in every video. It doesn't matter if you're a beginner (like me) or have been making your own awhile, it never hurts to get reminders. Plus, it doesn't matter what video sparks your interest, you're going to see why you're doing what you're doing. It's awesome! (And I think the rants are funny.)

In Kuwait, the KD brand grape juice was the favorite, because it was so rich. Go to the supermarket, 4 cases of grape juice, pounds of sugar, and the store attendent (from India) would tell you “oh, the yeast is on aisle 6”.😆

I learned this method from a guy on youtube 'pawpaw' from the 'doing it cheap' channel like 4 years ago. Honestly I haven't changed much, no 'fancy' equipment, I want to change all that. After watching your vids for over a year now I want to up my game. Just on another note THANKS!

This was my first adventure into winemaking. I would make it 6 gallons at a time with Concord grape juice concentrate and sugar to 18% potential alcohol. Using Champaign yeast it came out great. A little back sweetened and it was perfect.

When i was driving truck, i forgot about a large bottle of Welchs natural grape juice for like 6 weeks straight. On the floor driving around the SW in the middle of summer. Lets just say when i found it, it was a really good night. Especially since i hadnt had a drink in like 8 months. 😆

@@user-ep2es1mp5r I am still making mead as well. I have made a bunch full strength, couple hydromels, wines and even some ciders. I have learned all my knowledge from @CityStreadingBrews! I love the way they teach and make it easy to follow! I have even been brave and entered a couple into competitions. I definitely recommend to others to watch all of the videos and just give mead, wine, cider or bear making a try. It gets really addictive! 🤗

This is the same way I got started 4 months ago. Now I've made over 30 gallons and have all the tools to do it right. Never would've made wine if I was told I had to make the initial investment.

A coffee filter put loosely over the loose cap and secured with a rubber band around the neck of the juice container prevents any bugs from getting in. Double check with a squeeze that air can escape. I do a extra step and brine and dry the filters first to prevent any mold, bugs don't like it either. I put mine in a cooler. It's dark and stays at an even temp. As for plastic and alcohol, that's what a lot of it comes in at the liquor store, LOL But glass is best. Glad to see you make this video. A tip on the funnel use. Save a bread tie wire or some stainless wire that can be sanitized. Bend it in half and hang it on the side of the mouth of the bottle, then put the funnel in. This lets the air escape as you pour so it doesn't overflow.

That Aldi juice makes such a wonderful wine versus the welch's juice, still drinkable it just tastes better faster. Also happens to be the first wine I ever made, great videos they are so helpful.

I like the welches but i use the 100% grape jucie versions. I did note adding wine acid belnd helped it. Need to try the aldi's jucie. Thanks for the comparison.

I've been making store juice wine for awhile now . (Ever since your apple wine video.) When using Welch's , I've found that one pound of sugar to one gallon of juice will bring the gravity to 1.10 . I left it dry to .99 . Racked it twice . The last batch still tasted too much like grape juice for my liking . It's still new . Hope in a couple months it'll taste more like wine . Thanks for another good one !

you are not using wine grapes, thats juice grapes thats why. i have no problem drinking it tho. get your juice from a wine store maybe it would make excellent wine

Well thanks to you guys i decided to make a jalapeno pineapple Mead. Actually been one of the most difficult ones I've done so far. But after about two months of Aging in the fridge. Tonight I broke out a wine glass and started enjoying the fruits of my labor. Probably one of the best looking wines I've ever made and although I think I can do it better The Taste ain't that bad either definitely a fun project to do! Hi, so I just racked de-gassed and tasted my first aldi grape juice wine. Yum! I used 2qt grape, 1 quart cranberry, and topped it off with pomegranate and I used R56 yeast. If I’m reading correctly I think it’s 11 or 12%, a little tart and a beautiful dark cherry red crystal clear color. Thanks for the great videos

when making anything cranberry try using some cranberry sauce like 1/2 a cup per gal in addition to your recipe, it changes the flavor profile and tastes amazing 😉

I just started a bottle of Cranberry-Pomegranate - but really want to try cranberry cherry. I saw one that was WHITE grape and cherry, and another that was concord grape black cherry. They are on my must try list along with a clear pear juice.

First... you guys are great! I've never done anything like this but have always been kinda interested in brewing and distilling. After stumbling on to your channel, and watching hours of videos, I decided to finally try this. My friend gave me his old still and equipment that included a hydrometer and some airlocks so I did use those. As of today, I'm on day 19 and still seeing bubbles. Although... it's slowed waaaaay... down. I did not deviate from your instructions other than using a hydrometer and an air lock. I figure the reason mine isn't' done in 15 days is probably because, as you've said on other videos... yeast has a mind of its own and perhaps the airlock. I don't care, I'm patient! Thank you for making your videos for newbies like me and not making me feel stupid like a lot of other brewing channels do. I think I may have found a new hobby and you have a new fan!

Now day 24 and still seeing bubbles. Very slow but they're definitely there. Haven't taken a gravity reading because I figured if there was still bubbles then there wasn't any point. Am I correct?

This basically, made me tear up. 😢 I was initially so intimated about making wine 🍷. In fact, that intimidation kept me from trying until my friend and fellow teacher, Brian J., said "were doing this." And he guided me through it step by step...then he moved away to another state. The first thing I did on my own was what I call in faux Spanish "vino chipas" ("vino cipas" in Italian). CHIPAS is pronounced "Cheap Ass," as in "cheap ass" wine. (Please forgive the inappropriate word) I figured if I could make drinkable wine at the lowest common level, I could do it with all the apparata! Thanks for this video.

Did your Apple cider from store bought juice & bread yeast and homemade blowoff tube. No hydrometer during lockdown so checked SG by weight method relative to water. Got a clear cider with around 7% abv. Now I have a hydrometer, wine yeast and airlocks and things happening more scientifically. Thanks for everything 😃

My first foray into wine making started in the 70s. I used frozen grape juice concentrate. I did, however, get an air lock. Second time I made wine was with homegrown rhubarb. Wow, powerful stuff! I didn't have any additional equipment. Just rhubarb juice, sugar and yeast. But I did use the air lock. Mighty fine!

A great video for people not sure whether brewing is a hobby they want to commit to. After seeing how easy and fun it is I’m sure they’ll be buying the equipment and binge watching your videos. Its a fun hobby but you guys entertain us making the hobby even more enjoyable. You guys are so sweet and wholesome and seriously funny! I just got into your videos, and had made a few meads throughout the last five years (literally could count them on two hands), but the idea that a bread yeast makes a good mead is very encouraging! That's all I've been using and recently made a very dry blackberry, clove, green tea mead that was unbelievable! I was skeptical about grape juice wines, previously, but may end up giving one a try. Dad joke abound - You guys are the bee's knees! Cheers! Edit and ps: TRBOS is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. Hasn't gotten old!

When I was a cheap B and couldn't afford the heavily inflated prices of airlocks, brew safe containers, hydrometers etc. What I used to do instead of an airlock, balloon or whatever. I just took a thin sharp tipped knife (a pairing knife is good) and slid it into the top of the plastic bottle lid. Not to make a hole. But to make an incision of two cleanly cut edges that were tight together. What that would do is guarantee that the gap was so tight that it would allow air to escape. But even water getting out was very hard. No worrying about the cap being too tight or too loose. No bugs. Easy and foolproof.

I just got done making this wine, it only took 10 days before the bubblage stopped. I swirled vigorously yesterday and let it settle out. It actually went dry 0.998 (roughly 7% abv) and it doesnt taste terrible. Its in the fridge and ill definitely be trying this again

My personal favorite "hillbilly" wine (that's what we call this quick dirty wine) is actually Walmart white grape peach. It has a nice flavor after the fermentation is done.

Ok, tonight I put the wine in bottles, my very first batch, using the bottled juice method you taught here. 16 days later.....Hmm, pretty good. I grew up in Alabama, and when I tasted it, I immediately thought "Muscadines". Tasted like muscadines. I like it! I'm hooked. I'm trying to talk my wife into the plaid level. But I admit it, its more fun to call it the "bejesus" level. It might be another bottle of wine to tip the scales for her. Thanks for inspiring our first batch. The next batch will be with store-bought juice again, but this time with an airlock, hydrometer, one-gallon carboy, a big red sanitizer tub, and the rest. Thanks again!!!🍷🍷🍷

People 10,000 years ago prayed to gods before making alcohol. I mean that literally. They took it as sacred exercise, so they bathed and cleansed religiously to keep the evil spirits away. :)

Renaissance-Tudor times, brewing was the responsibility of the lady of the house. And they took great pains and pride in it.

Yup and most ancient wine was not as good as todays. Like beer brewing being in wood vats or open to the air, it could eventually go sour. That is why they experimented with boiling water in wooded casks and other things to improve it. If you want to drink soured wine/wine vinegar by all means do what you like.

We did this exact method on our first batch of wine. Turned out really good after the "skunk" smell and taste finally got out of it. Since then we have used 100%, no sugar added, fruit concentrate. Then we add water until we reached 1.110 OG. We wanted only the sugars brought to the party by 100% of the juice. We just started 3 batches last weekend. A grape, a crangrape, and a pineapple. We're excited to see how they turn out.

I believe I have found a hobby I can enjoy, one that incorporates a bit of chemistry which allows me the enjoyment of the fruits of my labor.

This is a great way to make a inexpensive wine I have alot of wine working at any given moment and I still do this exact wine for fun plus a decent taest.

When I was homebrewing, one of the easiest things I ever made was Apfelwein….because It’s just apple cider and champagne yeast, plus whatever kind of sugar boost is desired to pop up the ABV. Got 5 gallons of a cider from a local orchard (they said it was a blend of several apple varieties), sanitized a Better Bottle, put in 2 pounds of maltose (NOT sucrose, or table sugar), and a packet of Pasteur champagne yeast. Fermented out like a house afire, ended up with an SG of 1.000. Result was good, and very, very dry.

Out of all the social media groups and pages and channels about wine making you guys have to be the most in-depth and informative I've found sofar and I've learnt quite a bit from you guys and I've been making mead's and fruit wines on and off for about 15 years now Ive really got back into it again and you guys are great teachers and one of the best sources of information and tips I've come across yet thankyou both so much

Greetings Derica and Brian! Long time fan, and stalker of videos haha. This is my first time commenting, as well as my first fermentation ever, and I just wanted to tell you I had great success with my very first simple sweet red following your process in a 1 gal carboy. I used 71b instead of bread yeast, but the numbers ended up about the same in the end. I also added half an orange peel, well cleaned with all the pith sliced off, as well as 1c dark black tea for tannin. Starting gravity was 1.121 and it finished at 1.020 just under 14% alc. I started it 7/8 and I racked off the lees in to wide mouth 7/19, and I am gonna leave it there for a week just to settle any sediment left behind and off gas a bit before bottling. Thank you so much for the time you spend making videos, you are both incredibly informative, and you don't waste time with unnecessary additives making this a fun, and simple process to enjoy :) Much Love from WA Josh

You can decant wine off sediment better if you pour out a long side of the bottle than if you pour out a short side.

Just racked and chilled my first 2 bottles. Pretty impressed. Nice sipping wine. Fermenting two other different grape juices to see if I have a preference. Thanks for the information!

First off...LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the channel. I watch a new video everyday. I wanted to share a story I thought you would find amusing. I made a batch of this stuff but slightly different...IE, used a 1 gal carboy for primary, used grape juice, 1.5 lbs of sugar, and added raisins for taste and texture (Used Red Star Premier Classic- Red Package) Starting gravity of ~1.113. This worked a little TOO well...lol. I got greedy and didn't leave enough head space (just above the shoulder). A raisin piece was pushed up by C02 and clogged my airlock, pressure built and long story short I was cleaning sticky must off my ceiling and floor in my basement. I was able to save the brew after cleanup and so far, so good, no "bugs" got in. 3 days now into primary and the yeast have calmed down (less violent), really excited to see how this finishes after the mishap. Keep up the good work, you guys keep me learning!

With that yeast, it will not come out the same. It will go completely dry. Just be aware. When you alter ingredients, it changes the outcome.

did it turned out lovely … added a cup of strong tea 1/2 c water and two tea bags … for tannins mouth feel… awesome had 1.110 turned out 1.000 but I prefer dry …

I have the gallon jar with an airlock, bread yeast, sugar, and all-natural passionfruit juice, but no hydrometer, auto-siphon, or food-safe sanitization solution. So I guess I'm somewhere in the middle! Will be doubling this recipe and using my airlock. Can't wait to try it. If I enjoy, I'll be investing the $30 or so for the aforementioned additions. Thanks for this!

you guys are the best channel for this-very instructive for newbies who are considering getting into it-I dont even drink wine but having fun with my concoction so far (13 days) One is still bubbling the other isnt- probably didnt shake one or the other enough. Thank you guys for an eye opener. I followed your video some time ago and I got a terrific drop!!!! In my later fermentations I added a cup of tea ,all spice, sultanas and clover. Fantastic. I used brewers yeast. Cheers from Melbourne.

First mead I ever made, honey, bead yeast, a little tea, water. Put it all in a big water bottle with a "sports cap" that was just barely open. Stuck it in a closet and forgot about it. Once it was clear it was done. It wasn't horrible but it did take a long time.

Thank you for explaining so well. My family usually makes wine for Christmas .. it’s a tradition. We usually use Concord grapes and this year I couldn’t find it anywhere...I was so bummed ... so happy now ..I’m going to try this method.

Hello guys, how you doing? My first brew (my version of vikings blood) is already ready and bottlened. Although you told me not to get higher abv I did it anyway with ec1118 ang got impressive 21,9 degrees. I put ginger and cinamon with the hibiscus. Absolutly awesome! Wish I could sent you a bottle of this precious liquid but i'm in brazil

We used to make wine in the laboratory of my university when I was studying microbiology. We also made "friendship cake". Is a cake made of fermented fruits.

I started a very similar wine to this 2 days ago, based on your old video. About 8 hours in it completely foamed over, like about enough to fill a glass. Need to get some blow off valves when the brew shops stock again (we've had very limited stock of anything for a while now)

I’ve done this quite a few times before. It’s really easy and it tasted pretty good. I didn’t add additional sugar. I’ll have to try that.

Speaking of the funnel, not having help, I bend a tooth pick to a 90° angle then stick it in along side the funnel end in the bottle top.

Nice to see this. I am doing the same thing right now but on the cap I am using a thin cloth beneath the cap and a small hole drilled in the cap to allow venting. Love your channel by the way.

when I used to make red wine in a country where alcohol was not permitted 😉 I used to add one or two tea bags to the fermentation mixture to get that tannin taste. It does give the wine and extra body.

I followed your video. turned out great. all I'd say is that it definitely needed more time. It kept going for three weeks, and after degassing and bottling, it recarbonated by the next week.

Thanks guys, great video. I started with brewing with IDY 3 months ago (due to availability of brewers supplies) and it was a real trial by fire process. Having some tried and tested lore passed on is really appreciated! Still a 3 week lead time on decent brewers yeast here in Port Elizabeth so this will be good to experiment with and make some tasty beverages!

I have starting to brewing because of you guys. Keep them coming. I have started a store bought grape juice wine on April 24, 2020. I used a half packet of Lavin d47 for a 1 gallon. I added 4 cups of white sugar and a some raisins. Original gravity was 1.128. after one month it was 1.110. It was super sweet. I added 16oz of water to bring down the gravity to 1.092. I was thinking that it might help the yeast get going and added more yeast. I waited 2 weeks to measure it again. On 6/5 is was 1.084, capped it and put it back. On 6/21 it was 1.070, I added some yeast nutrients and yeast energizer ( first time for these). It is stored in a darkish cool room about 62-64 degrees. I place all of my brews in a plastic tub in case that things exploded (ex: Brian’s shoes), I placed a heating pad on low underneath the plastic tub. Internal temperature in the center of the fermenter is 72 f. I’m still seeing tiny bubbles coming up in the must. It seems that all of my wines and meads are taking a long time to get out of the primary. Should I be concerned after 2 months in primary? Should I keep going or rack it? Is the room temperature really slowing down my brews? How can you tell, if your yeast is bad? Thanks

You used way too much sugar right from the start. That stressed the yeast right away so they took a lot longer. Adding energizer and nutrients that late in the game won't do much good. Best to split or dilute like you did. If they are all taking a long time in primary, it is possible you are starting with too high a gravity. I aim for 1.100 to 1.120 maximum to start most times.

Yup, im hooked, thanks to you guys. 10lts of Blackcurrant wine, some 25lts of Apple cider and 5lts Strawberry wine all down to watching you guys and trying out stuff. Very strange to see Brian without the intensity of "AIRLOCK GUYS!".. but a nice workover on the earlier Grape Juice wine video. Im curios on Meads, but honey is too expensive to buy here in Norway to try that. I did consider getting a hive but my wife said im losing it.haha

Not sure what honey costs in Norway but it ain't cheap in Germany either unless you know where to look. The supermarket and Amazon suck for finding good and cheap honey. Find a wholesale website specializing in bee products, any larger amount over 20 kg will see a significant and sudden drop in cost per kg, I've seen EU-sourced wildflower honey for as little as 8 euros per kilo, something fancy like acacia honey for 10. Or you could just try scouting out some local beekeepers who might hook you up or ask around if someone in the family knows one.

Great video for beginners. I went to a local brew supply store in RI to get a gift certificate for my brother in law. While there I asked about 71B yeast. He sold me packd for $.80 each. Yup I got 3 packs for $2.40 plus tax. i have seen this online for $8.00 per pack. Are these local guys insane?

Hello yall! Just bottled my first (successful)? Attempt of store bought juice. It's a cranberry pomegranate. I used bread yeast to ferment. Startimg gravity was 1.114. Final was 1.022. Pretty sweet. My question is this. What should it taste like right now? Its sweet for sure and has a little bite and an odd taste. Footy? Lol. Not horrible but just curious what a newly made wine should taste like. Thanks for all your videos. Looking forward to my apple strawberry thats going right now.

Tried the purple grape wasn’t satisfied, when the to the white grape juice and concentrate no table sugar added much better results a slightly dryer white wine freeze a few cubes drop in ginger ale makes a nice cooler thanks for videos very entertaining

I'm new to brewing but came from the mycology/STEM world. I'll be pouring mine through a reusable coffee micro-mesh camping gadget. Infinitely reusable and very fine mesh. I imagine that would accelerate the cold crashing. Glad to see someone do this with a pitcher because I didn't want to mess with tiny siphon lines for 1.5 quarts a bottle-ish.

No need to filter or cold crash. It will clear on it’s own :). Coffee filters will only oxidize it and the particles are so small they will pass right through.

This was only meant to introduce people to brewing at home. Siphoning is absolutely recommended. Use a bottling wand and bottling is super simple.

I'm finding that repurposing the dark green Martinelli sparkling cider/grape juice bottles is an easy way to stock up on "wine" bottles. They also have the added benefit of being built for a carbonated beverage, so there's less chance of the glass exploding if a wine is accidentally racked before fermentation is done. My two cents, for what it's worth.

Good choice! I agree. I like the Aldi's lemonade bottles, but if you can't get those... the Martinelli's work well.
