the actual technique, is to fill it with recommended amount, turn the engine on, shift through the drive selections, bring the fluid to temp, stop the engine and then check the level

There is a "Filter" as well within the trans cooler. I highly suggest changing that out on the first fluid change and then every other after. But, your 25K recommendation is spot on if you enjoy "longevity". Anyone who drives a Nissan CVT and complains about "faulty manufacturing", is simply a person that enjoys a throw-away car. Because, they just drive w/o ever doing any preventative maintenance - ever.

Heard a few people say, only fill up with what you took out. Whats the best practice, to take the overflow bolt out or replace whatever came out?

The overflow hole is designed so that the fluid level is at the correct amount, so I trust that. Especially if you’ve had the fluid changed before by someone else, where they might have it over or under filled, I would not only rely on what fluid amount was in there previously. Just my 2 cents 👌🏽

If you're out of warranty you can use any fluid that meets or exceeds hcf-2. Amsoil is 100% synthetic, and won't void warranty.

@@JamesFixIt amsoil is a true 100% synthetic fluid. It won't void warranty either. Brands that say full synthetic can say that even if they're not technically a true synthetic. Amsoil is a true synthetic. It last longer, and protects longer, and better. There's a reason it's so expensive too.

I use amsoil CVT fluid in my 2020 Honda civic sport plus I change my filters and gaskets. My transmission runs smooth no problems whatsoever. I'm at 60,000 miles currently. However, I did a transmission service at 30,000 miles.

@@gabrielgaribay2145 I've actually been using the valvoline maxlife multi atf/cvt for 50,000 miles. No issues. As much as I'd love to use amsoil it's expensive, and you have to order it. Atleast around here. I've trusted valvoline for 20 years, and use their fluids for everything. Currently running their restore and protect oil, their dot 3/dot 4 brake fluid, and like I said the transmission fluid. I initially used their stright up cvt fluid , the stuff in the blue bottle. For whatever reason my 2019 civic coupe 1.5t NON paddle shift would get a wicked stink through the vents with heat on, after going from P to R to D. No drips anywhere, I even pressure washed the engine bay, and chassis. I used brake clean all around the transmission pan as well. To this day I still don't get why that happens with their CVT fluid. Amile cvt fluid does the same thing. Very strange. Only thing I can think of is there's 2 different cvt transmissions? One with paddle shift, one without? Even though the paddle "shifting" is all done by a computer. So why would they waste money on multiple transmissions? Castrol didn't make the smell either. Anyway, ive been on the valvoline maxlife for awhile now and it's been great. To anyone reading this however, and plans on running non oem hcf-2 make sure you do 3 drain and fills. You really don't want different brands mixing. I like to do a drain and fill. Then drive 50-100 miles, do the 2nd drain and fill, then drive my normal route for work for the week. Then Saturday or Sunday do the final drain and fill. Also depending on your mileage you might want to consider doing both the cvt filters. Also periodically check the transmission breather cap. Mine was fully clogged at 20,000 miles 😮. So now I check it once a month. Considering running a hose over the breather tube, and up into a different part of the engine bay. Then attaching one of those mini air filters. Honda has been using that same breather cap for generations now, and they're always getting clogged. Then the transmission can't breathe, and gasses build, then it pops off the fill plug. I wonder how many people are driving around right now with a clogged vent tube cap, and no fill plug. Used to see that all the time when I worked for my local honda dealership.

Get a bucket that has Gallons/Liters marked to the top. Drain it out, and you will know the exact amount of oil to put back in. There is no need to remove the top drain plug to check if it's full.

4.8L came out of the CVT drain plug, what next? Does CVT transmission oil expand in volume if it is old and dirty? My 2017 civic now has 190K km on it, and bought it used with 30K km on the odometer. First CVT oil swap I'm doing and think I may had my car slanted forward as when I drained the oil, 4.8 litres came out. Manual says to drain and refil with 3.5L. Now I only have 4 litres to refil the car with. Do I simply use the 4 litre and add 0.8L of the old oil I've taken out? I don't know if the old dirty oil expands in volume. And I'm hesitant to use the check bolt if indeed the CVT volume expands or the car is not leveled properly. What do you guys think? Cheers,

Good point. I did fill about 4.5, but didn’t see the check bolt dripping, which was most likely about .5-.6 qts once it stopped.

One thing i noticed when doing mine is does the sequence of checking the checkbolt matter? I opened the checkbolt after the fill and it was pouring consistently so i decided to close it and run the car through the gears. Then opened it again and it had completely stopped draining. Makes me wonder if your supposed to open check bolt before or after running the gears since oil seems to have spread more through the transmission while running gears.

@@frankly2677 it really depends on what and how you did things. The initial fill is 3.9 quarts, so that's the amount of fluid you should add after draining before you start the engine if you haven't dropped the pan. You then cycle through all the gears like he mentioned before putting it back in park to let it get up to operating temp. Then shut if off and add whatever remaining amount is needed. Dropping the pan and replacing the filters will obviously add to that amount, as will the fluid needed if you're actually flushing it.

@@frankly2677 ... YES it does matter. Drain. Fill with 4qts. Start engine and run through the gears, per video at 3 seconds per gear. With engine still running, remove the check bolt and let it drain until a slow stream. Then tighten bolt to 32 lbs/ft. Done.
