Let me start by saying I have ZERO mechanical ability. When I told my friends I was going to attempt the replace the stater pull rope, they laughed and I got the sarcastic "good luck". I watched this video 4 times and was certain I could do it. I set up my lap top out side got the tools like Jeff instructed and BAM.......30 minutes later job done and done successfully. $6 and 30 minutes. Jeff saved me both time and money. For me the hardest part of this whole job was threading the rope through the handle. The dang thing would just not go through. I eventually managed to push it through with a thin wire. Great video! Thank you for posting it!

When I saw the rivets, I thought I had a Chinese copy of a B&S with a non serviceable pull string, forcing the consumer to replace the whole assembly. It's been so long since I've worked on one (reliability), I forgot the whole shroud comes off. Good video. Got me where I needed to go.

I love KZbin !!! I am a small older female, and I have been able to fix so many things around my house on my own!! Finding a knowledgeable employee at Home Depot, or where ever you get your parts is also a big help.! I've had my lawn mower 20 years, this will be the second pull rope I've repaired, and last year I bought a new mower which wasn't half as good as my beat up one, so back it went and I repaired the broken wheel, the front wheel drive and the blade! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Thanks! My ripcord cut off right next to the inner knot and came completely un-spooled. I coiled the cord to see how far to rotate the spinner, pushed a screwdriver in there to hold it, used the suggested melting technique to get it through. After all was put back together it works perfectly again. you're a life saver!

Yes; read the comments. I suggested a while back ago (maybe a year or so ago) using a crochet hook to pull the cord thorough; then you do not have to cut the metal.

Every time before I took the rewind part out to change a cord, with results that the coiled spring went sproing and hours later it finally got back together, after a few dozen choice words. ( LOL) This time it was easy doing it your way. I used a small stiff string tied to a small strong sewing thread tied to the new cord and it worked so well. I put the stiff string thru first and pull the thread and new cord right thru. Thanks again sir!

Great video! My in-laws had the exact same lawn mower, and the rope broke when I borrowed it. I just spent $5 at Lowe's for a new rope, followed the video, and replaced it in about 20 minutes. The only issue i had was the oil spout came off when i put the engine shroud back on, so i had to clean everything to make sure there was no dirt in the oil tank. Thank you again!

It's been a long time since I had a mower apart, and I always check a tech manual or video to see what I'll be getting into. Your video is very well made. I could clearly see the locations of screws and parts before removal. The differences between my Quantum Briggs and Stratton mower engine and your Craftsman were easily worked through. I especially appreciate you describing twisting the oil dipstick instead of pulling it out. For safety, I cleaned well before trying to twist, and it did pop out. but no debris was present to fall into the crankcase. Thank you!

Ended up having to replace the tank on a relatives 6hp Briggs&Stratton. Took about 5 minutes total. 2 Phillips head screws, 3 - 8mm bolts around the tank and the single 10mm on the side. Remove the fuel line and it was out of there. Quickly. Lol. Noticed it was leaking when I was replacing their pull cord last week, using this vid to follow along. Thanks! Made it very easy indeed. FYI: I got an Original Equipment Replacement Briggs&Stratton fuel tank from Amazon for $29.96 USD. About $20 cheaper than list price. It comes with a revised spacer for the lower bolt that pops into the hole in the tank instead of just floating freely on the bolt, between the tank and mower.
