The "mod corsage" quilt block blog post that I mentioned in the video ;)
www.iheartstitc...
This is a quilt block using some improv skills to create a block using scraps of fabric and wonky angles. There are no rules, just grab and sew, making this a liberating sewing experience.
The rulers I mentioned in the video

I'm an "old" new quilter, but have been buying bits of fabrics for years. This improv piecing looks so fun. Been watching you lots over the last few weeks & really enjoy your videos, learning so much! You are a delight to watch...so lovely!

I'm an old new quilter (again) myself. Used to make quilts decades ago but gave it up as I didn't enjoy the precision cuts, etc - much too fussy for me. Last year I started quilting again minus the fussiness so I guess all my quilts are scrape & improv quilts.

Melanie you are the first quilting instructor that I have been impressed with. Thank you. I have avoided venturing onto other patterns because I'm afraid they will not be good enough. You gave me some confidence watching some of your videos tonight. Deb

Love your tutorial. I had started a quilt using rectangles from scrap fabric but didn't know I was improve quilting until I visited my local sewing store, SewDayton, and Jessie told me I was improv quilting. Your tutorial came up when I googled it. I will add irregular shapes now! Thanks for the fun idea!

I love this video! This is my favorite way to piece. I love to grab my orphan blocks and scraps and just play away! I pieced a twin size top and had to quit as it was getting too big. But more scraps became more improv blocks...so much fun!!! I loved your ideas for new ways to be thematic and creative. Cheers!

What a fun video! I love the blocks you shared at the end. I'm sort of OCD and have trouble 'free wheeling', so I love the idea of at least having a common center piece and then working all sorts of magic around the edges. Love your videos! You're so straight forward and concise - everything's always really easy to understand.

I just found your videos last week, and I really enjoy them! I'm dying to know how you just take your fabric away from your machine with no clipping or threads! Is it a feature of your machine? That is so neat!

Is there a follow up on how to join the blocks together to make a complete quilt? I'd love to try this!
@MelanieHam
@MelanieHam 8 жыл бұрын
+Jayne Just you can just join them together or put sashing strips between, depends on size you want and if you want each block to stand out more on its own then separate with strips of fabric.
@squirrelbuddi
@squirrelbuddi 4 жыл бұрын
What if you don't want to do strips but just follow the natural lines of your scraps? As my scraps get smaller and smaller they're harder to use in things and I want to waste the least amount of fabric. Can you do a sort of puzzle piece style where you square the block at the end?

Love my Juki but it's too big to take to a class so I will probably go out and buy a basic smaller sewing machine. Have any recommendations? Thanks for sharing the wonky block idea. I need to learn how to audition fabrics. Any and all ideas and suggestions are much needed and welcomed. Thanks!

janette terry this is a perfect way to play with patterns and color combinations. Whatever is pleasing to your eye. I put together combinations that really surprised me. If my blocks didn't have enough in common, I sashed them with a coordinating neutral. Happy piecing to you.
