I too was always taught by my mother to scrape every last bit of goodness because, both my mother and grandmother lived through wars where food was very scarce.

Yes, both my grandma's lived through the Depression era. Food was scarce, and it was not wasted!

I make this every Christmas but i substitute the dream whip which to me is kinda pricy..I use a big tub of cool whip plus i go for generic(hcf). I used to be real picky but no more. I use generic creamcheese (hcf) but i do give credit for this crust recipe to this channel. An as a quik cute thing i get some of the white mixture an divide some up an dye with different food coloring an since the cherries are round "ornament looking" i dab with the dyed bolder colors for Christmas and on Easter i use pastel food coloring Looks precious if i do say so myself.

Believe it or not, I often do the same thing anymore if I can't find Dream Whip for whatever reason. And that's really cool about the ornament idea! Thanks so much for the feedback.

Grew up on this--I thought we used regular sugar but powdered seems to work well.

Would it hold It's shape better if you use cool whip?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by holding its shape? I'm not sure that Cool Whip would be any different. That said, it would work as a substitute in a pinch.

Do you have one of these delights done with maraschino cherries ? I recently tasted them & absolutely love them. Or could you mix them in with the cherry pie filling for 2 kinds of cherry flavor ? Actually that sounds good.
