30+ years living with chronic back pain (after surgery, injections, therapy etc) a portable TENs unit helps for acute pain (just don’t wear it through security), stay well hydrated (hydrated spinal discs create space to minimize nerve pinching), a coccyx cushion (a flatter portable gel one) allows for the tailbone to “float” thereby allowing for longer sitting comfort. (Keeps the discs from tightly piling on top of each other). Topicals such as salon pas patches, lidocaine patches, liquid pain lotions (some are aspirin based others lidocaine - all these items are commonly found in drugstores, etc). Proper shoes: shoes with lower to low heel (not flat) good arch support - or cushioning - inserts as needed. If carting a purse or bag, avoid one shouldered carrying: puts back out of alignment- opt for backpack, crossbody or rolling. Back pain and traveling doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive. 😎

I believe in doing a few exercises, including toe touches, to loosen up as soon as you get up. When you wake up in a near-panic and rush to get to the airport, it doesn’t take much for an unfamiliar move-lifting a bag, any kind of twisting-to lead to a muscle spasm or pain (which can range from temporary to long-lasting).

I have had multiple back surgeries. Heres what i do the day of the trip....i like to do my regular exercise routine as much as possible...keep the muscles happy and warm. I take Tylenol as directed on the bottle. When I could use Ibuprofen, i alternated them every 4 hours. This just helps with the little twinges of pain that happens during travel. I love having a heating pad with me. I saw in another poster that there are battery powered heating pads....totally awesome! I will be investing in one for my travels. I also keep plastic baggies with me in case i need an ice pack....sometimes ice gives me comfort more than the heat. It's really all about keeping your core happy!!

Great video! So many packing videos are about how to cram more into a backpack, which just makes it heavier. For people/seniors with back pain it may be decades since they’ve been able to do that. I do find lidocaine patches and lotion work well for me. I have an Amazon Travemate extra large memory foam cushion to sit on. I find that cushions on my back actually hurt worse. The thick cushion on the seat also helps if you have SI issues. It helps in the car when you’re driving on bumps. I usually check my carry-on at the gate. They never question when you’re a senior, and that way you don’t have to pay for a checked back. I have a small tote to keep an extra shirt and my 311 and medicine in. I am in the process of trying to find a small Rolling personal item bag. I want one that’s smaller than the items you have shown. Good health to you!

I avoid a sore back by staying conscious of weight. I am slowly adding 100% linen and merino wool pieces to my travel wardrobe for many reasons, but a big one is because they are light fabrics. Also, if using a backpack, a hip belt attached to the backpack redistributes the weight to your hips and legs rather than shoulders and back. It makes such a difference! Also, if trying to swap liquids (shampoo, detergents) for dry products. Every other bit helps!

I’ve had back pain since I was hit by a car as a pedestrian when I was 18. I’m now 64 and I am on pain mgmt. But, I found that the Kailo patches really help my back or neck (I have a bulging disk in my neck from falling down a flight of stairs in 2019. The patches are amazing and can be reused for up to 1 year, although I’ve had mine for over 3 years. They are not cheap and for a pack of 10 adhesives for the patches, it’s $26. The initial 1 patch and 10 adhesives is $119. I don’t know how they work, but they block the pain signal from the pain to the brain. I hope your back heals soon and you have safe travels!

I hope your back makes a full recovery. I used to have lower back pain, after being rear ended a couple of times in my work vehicles. I Fortunately did not have disk or bone issues and with physical therapy and watching out for sugars and gluten which cause me inflammation, I am pain free most of the time. That said I have backpacks that fit me really well and have really good frames, (Osprey woman specific) now in my mid 60s, I hope to be able to keep using backpacks for years to come. I use public transportation, buses and trains more than I fly so wheels can be a real pain. Packing light has always been my biggest strategy. Your videos are some of the best for cutting weight. I feel your pain!!!I had back surgery (laminectomy) and I've had a weak left leg/bad foot ever since....over 20 years. Plus, at 73 I have aches and pains...plus two foot operations. So, it's a mess. However, as I prep for my first overseas trip since 1992 (!) I am working to strengthen my core. I have a 6.5 lb rollerboard softside BritBag (small, 21.5" tall) and am debating which of two international sized personal items bags (Cabinmax 1.7 lbs vs MyGreen (2.3 lbs). I will most likely have more "support/comfort" items than clothes, LOL. I have a little "heat/cold beads" thing I got as a freebie at a health fair years ago and it seems to heat nicely in a microwave. Also, Tiger Balm and/or the Zim's Maxi Freeze. BTW, VICKS Vaporub also will do the trick on a sore area needing warmth! Other than that, lots of praying! Oh, I finally decided on the wonderfully light Lie Se Zhe vest after sending the 33000Ft and a couple of Gihuo vests back...the Gihuo vests were heavy and too long! The 33000Ft was too heavy/warmish for me and the inner pockets had no closures. The LSZ vest is fantastic! It has 2 inside zip pockets, and on the outside, 2 zipped handwarmer pockets and a bunch of velcro pockets which help keep it very light.

Great topic! I don’t have anything special that I pack for my back, but I do prepare for travel by scheduling a chiropractic adjustment as close to my departure date as possible and staying consistent with back and core exercises leading up to and during my trip. I don’t tend to reach for it, but I will keep ibuprofen and maybe a muscle relaxer in my personal item. I will try to stretch during a layover, as well as before getting on the plane and after getting off. I’m sure I look kind of silly, but I’ll never see those strangers again and it helps loosen up stiff hip and back muscles. I recently returned from A 14 day trip to Paris Olympics and Provence . I purchased the Krosser 2 wheeler after seeing on of your videos but used it for first time . I have herniated peer discs and can only use a small back pack that holds a sweater and a few snacks. The Krosser did fit under my United Economy seat and in one case when the larger overhead bins were full it fit intox one of the smaller end bins that will not hold a carry on. The rolling spared my back. It rolled smoothly onto metro, onto local French trains, up/ down escalators and in one case I had to roll : carry it up metro steps . It holds a lot but every space is functional. A tsa lock fits through an opening in thé zip tabs. I spare my back by also booking the lower seating on decker trains and for little more nook First class trains for wider seats and costs only a small amount more over 2nd class but helps the back. I use a product containing Devil's Claw cream when inflammation due to injury occurs. It's non-toxic and very soothing almost immediately. Thanks for all your practical tips. I also struggle with back pain, so I find putting my carry-on luggage almost impossible. Plus I'm short. I'm going to a wedding in ID this week and I'll probably have to pack my check-in luggage because there is hiking and swimming involved, dressy clothes, and it gets cold at night so I'll need sweaters and jacket. 😊

@@cynthiaslebodnik6945 yes, I find that it’s gonna be easier to just check my luggage and two smaller bags and pay for the extra if I need to, but it’ll save my back! I hope you have a wonderful time at the wedding in Idaho and enjoy that beautiful state! 💕😊

I really sympathize with your pain. Travelling with a bad back can be really tough! I was living and teaching in Japan when I went to Indonesia on holiday and was beaten and robbed by a long distance taxi driver. I ended up wearing a back brace for the next 3 years. One thing that was a pain, I was always taken in for secondary screening at the airport when I travelled. But it did help with the back. I find the type of shoes I wear is critical when my back is hurting. No heels at all, and really good arch support. When I am traveling, I will bring a wheeled personal item and a larger wheeled carry on, but I will listen for the inevitable announcement telling us the flight is very full (it always is, if a Canadian flight has more than a few empty seats these days, they cancel the flight) and offering free checked bag gate checking. I take advantage of that so I only have to wrangle the personal item bag at my seat. I do not do all my packing in one go, so it doesn't strain my back too much. The toiletry kit and flight comfort kit are always packed, and clothes are in packing cubes, so I can just pull out the correct ones and spend a short time playing tetris with the cubes in my case. One thing that is very important for me is to keep changing positions frequently, spending a long time in one position is the worst thing for back pain. I hope you feel better very soon!

I’m sorry to hear you have back issues. I’ve suffered all my adult life and can sympathise. I had an operation on discs and vertebrae. Just some ideas from me - I use my ironing board to pack on. I’m in the UK and always have Volterol (or a generic supermarket version) gel in my first aid. I believe its voltaren in the US. It really helps to keep you moving. If using a rucksack, one with a waist strap takes a lot of the weight and saves the shoulders (as you show though, a good wheelie trolley is better.). I had a back belt but have put on tummy weight, I must get another. Sitting for long periods is the worst for backs. Move around and get up for a walk as much as possible. Really good walking shoes/trainers with arch support help from the ground up as well, helping to provide some shock absorbency. Safe travels!

Life is impacted once you fracture any bone in your body, spinal fractures are serious & the worse. If you won't take the time to heal, and change habits, it's gonna be detrimental. Braces weaken muscles, you can't depend on it fully. Got to lose body weight to get pressure off your back. I mentioned previously a spine fracture can be recurring. In fact, once a spine fracture takes place more areas can fracture. I say heal up completely & take time off from traveling to heal.

@ekdaufin1485 yes I agree. I have done different healing methodologies & Body code helped me with my back pain, it’s not always one & done but I had terrible back spasms that have gone away. I used frequency healing also. I also used naturopathic supplements. I never had to get on any heavy painkillers for which I am grateful. There are several books that explain the emotional connection to pain in the body. Louise Hay had a couple.
