Elly's Everyday Soap Making

3 жыл бұрын

An easy cold process pine tar soap, no stick blender required. I love this recipe! And so do many of my friends and family, especially the men. I don't make any therapeutic claims about this soap, except to say that Pine Tar has been used medicinally for skin conditions for centuries, and is said to have a calming effect on irritated skin. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions, but either way, this is a unique and satisfying soap to make and to use.
This is a good general introduction to Pine Tar and its uses:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_tar
Some interesting dermatological research on Pine Tar:
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5434829/#:~:text=Pine%20tar%20is%20thought%20to,%E2%80%90inflammatory%2C%20antibacterial%20and%20antifungal.
And a great link from Classic Bells website on the use of Pine Tar in soap making:
classicbells.com/soap/pineTarSoap.asp
Where to buy Pine Tar?
That will entirely depend on your location. Australians can purchase pure Swedish pine tar quite easily from online pet supplies shops, saddlery and produce agencies (make sure you get pure pine tar!) and possibly even some boat building suppliers. Soap makers in other countries will have to do their own research. Just make sure you purchase 100% pure pine tar, and nothing else.
*Recipe details*
[950g oils in total]
598g olive oil
85g coconut oil
95g cocoa butter
47g castor oil
114g pine tar (pine tar is not an oil and does not saponify with the lye, but it is usually calculated into the soap recipe as a percentage of the total oil amount. Most soap calculators list pine tar in their oils selection).
9.5g beeswax
38g essential oil (I used 23g tea tree and 15g cedar, but you can use any EO's you think would pair nicely with the pine tar).
237g water (I used all ice, but half water - half ice might be better).
118g sodium hydroxide/caustic soda (make sure your product is at least 98% sodium hydroxide).
This recipe has a 4% superfat and uses a 2 : 1 water to lye ratio.
My mould used in this video is 37cm long, 7cm wide and 5.7cm deep. It holds 1.480kg of soap batter.
METHOD as per video demonstration
*New to soap making? This is important!*
Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Just made a batch for my husband, he has a scalp issue, and also found out it's useful for dog's with rashes as well. Turned out really well and so easy. Quick stir and light trace and just poured it into the mould in time. This morning after overnight in a Woolies chiller bag to keep it warm, its perfect. Your recipes are so good. I made a few of them. Many soap teachers here on KZbin ‘forget’ to mention ‘little details’ on their video. Not sure if accidentally or purposely. Not you. Every single detail and measurements are there. God bless your heart. 💕I genuinely love you and your recipes. Thank you💕👍🌿🙏🏻🌎❤️

I just made some pine tar soap yesterday! I did a batch of CP and HP. Making pine tar soap with HP is nice since you don’t have to worry about acceleration, a lot less stressful lol! I did three shades in my CP and I got so close to my last shade not going into the mold🤫 I just added a little bit of cedar EO, but now I have to try some tea tree too! It’s so interesting how people are with scents, I’ve had some people say they absolutely hate lemongrass and others say they absolutely love it, it’s funny 😆 Thanks for the video!

Wow! That was interesting. Just mixed this up and it went from a nice smooth substance to thick and hardening in a heartbeat! I just about got it in the mold before it would have been a real challenge to pour! I hope it turns out!!

I make tons of pine tar soap, the longer it sits the better and the more the smell mellows and becomes so nice! My best bars are a year or more. It's what I use to wash my face and my skin has never been better. I bath my animals with it, they soft and smell so good. Love it, your soap looks beautiful😍

Hi Elly! I made my first batch of Pine Tar soap yesterday and wonder why it took me so long to get around to it. It all went exactly as you said and only took about 2-3 minutes to trace just by stirring it with a big spoon! I lined my mould for the first time using your method from another video and it made turning out the soap so much easier! I quite like the smell of it too. Can't wait to try it out. Thank you.

Thanks Di, it's an old Ikea bowl I've had for at least 15 years. They don't make them quite the same anymore, but any large bowl with a pouring lip would work, or a large jug.

We always had pine tar at home when I was a child. We were in a small village and my grandma used this tar to stop snakes enter home. And it was a medicine also. While you make the soap, I remembered and nosed the smell as it was here. 💓💓
