Hi, thanks for your video. You inspired me to make my own soap. Before i start gathering everything I would like to know whether we should keep all the utensils, spoons , hand blender separate from other kitchen tasks?

Hey Elly In the recipe, it says that you need 50 % of liquid oils, being; olive oil and an other vegetable oil. Can I use castor oil as the total liquid oil instead of olive oil and other?

Thanks for sharing! Quick question: do you use your equipment for everyday cooking after cleaning or are your tools dedicated to soap making? Ie rubber spatulas, immersion blender, etc

Thank you so much so helpful. Interesting and beautifully presented. Been making soap for 14 years and still learning. Interesting point on weather. In Ireland here i normaly make my cold process soap during summer times or the lack there of and in winter i make more hot process. Funny but it just works that way for me. Using tallow and goats milk since im in the middle of a farmer community. And the locals love it. But for my vegan friends i only make them plant based soap. Im doing lotions salvas and beeswax candles. for my family. Thank you sooooo much. This helps me as im trying to study again .

so, im curious about your essential oil amounts. Here in the states a 1 oz bottle (600 drops) of some essential oils is outrageous. We typically use them by the drop. About 25 drops is 1/4 tsp. Your little cup looks like a large amount of essential oils. 1oz or 10 ml basil essential oil is 10$. Is this what you are doing? Are your essential oils cheaper?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking18 сағат бұрын
I'm buying them from bulk wholesale/soap making suppliers. EO's are usually added to bar soap at 3% of the oil amount (in grams) in the recipe, in liquid soap usually around 1%. So yes, it can be a lot if you're making 1-2 kilograms (1000-2000g) of soap :)

Hi Elly! I just made this recipe yesterday for the second time. Strangely, the first time I did have that fatty layer on top, but this time nothing!!! Same recipe, same potassium hydroxide (although months older now), same crock pot. One small difference was that I didn't use distilled water this time, I used our drinking water which is filtered well water. Also, the first time the soap turned to custard, mashed potatoes, paste and saponification very quickly, and this time it took about 2 hours to fully saponify according to my ph strip! Such an amazing difference, all things considered, wouldn't you say? As always I so much appreciated being able to go back to your video to refresh and enjoy your tutorial. And now I'll happily buy you a coffee!

Thanks for this, I will see if my new one needs some lube.. I bought a $17 Betty Crocker one specifically for soapmaking, and it's so much louder than my 20+ year old Braun that I don't make soap past 11 pm or I worry about disturbing my neighbours because the room I use for soapmaking shares a wall with other units and there's another unit directly below (townhouse problems) ... though I don't ever soak stuff like this for any length of time, 5 min in hot water for soapy stuff is it, with the Braun I always clean it right away. The new one also gets hotter faster than the old one, but with soapmaking, it at least gets lots of rest.

Olive oil has gone way up in price here (Canada) it used to be about ten bucks but now the best sale price I can find is about fifteen, but rice bran oil from what I can tell is a specialty oil, I can get a teeny 350 ml bottle for $7.50 or so, though it looks like it's available on Amazon in variousstates of refinement for a bit less than olive oil... so since canola oil is $4 for 750 ml, I'm going to try substitutiing it for olive oil and I'm going to add 5% beeswax from my hives... if I can find a Canadian source for lye, I could call it an all Canadian batch! But this first time I'm going with 25% coconut oil... Thanks for the tutorial! I made my fifth batch last night (bay leaf infused olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter and a little beeswax, using bay leaf infused flax gel), my first was with rosemary and flax gel and lavender, cedar and oregano oils, my second was the same recipe but without the rosemary, fragrance or flax gel, my third was olive oil, honey and 5% beeswax, and my fourth was pure coconut oil with peppermint essential oils. This is so much fun, but I have to lock the scented bars away in an unused room for the first week or they trigger my scent issues, even scents I normally have no problem with.

Hello Elly this was very helpful as I was overwhelmed in the beginning. Where do you purchase fragrances from?

I buy most of my EO’s from online suppliers. I have a soap suppliers listing for Australia on my website :)

Hi Elly, I halved this batch successfully. However, I had a lot of tiny bubbles in the batter. Do you think this was because of the stick blender? Maybe I should have jyst stirred it to trace 🤔🤓 🇨🇦 P.S. I do not have access to palm oil and used tallow in its place.
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingКүн бұрын
Yes that would be due to getting air blended into the mix. Trick is to ‘burp’ your blender and keep the head under the surface of the batter.

@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Okay, thank you so much for your opinion. I love your channel and recipes. I am only a beginner, but so far, I've made your castile soap, coffee soap, and now the neem...all successfully halved. Thanks again.❤️

hello, ive been asking this other places but cant get an answer, if you dont have all the different oils can you just add the oil amount together of the one you do have to make the soap?
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingКүн бұрын
You can, but any oil change requires that the soap is recalculated in a soap-lye calculator for the correct sodium hydroxide amount. I have videos to show how to do that :)

Elly. Hi there. I made soap last night and it seized. I think it was the fragrance but I also added clay. And the oils were likely more than 20 degrees cooler than the lye solution. Anyway, I molded it but concerned that it didn’t saponify. Is it too take tonight to try to melt it into a little water and blend it together better and remold ? Thank you ❤❤

Thank you! You can add a bit of honey to the oils at the start. Just keep the amount small, it can overheat soap! One teaspoon is enough.

Far be it from me to question you, but why 70%? Doesn’t it depend on water to oil ratio?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking3 күн бұрын
Yes that's right. I do mention that in the video. It will require adjustment for various formulas. Just a guide.
@rossydv3 күн бұрын
@ actually I (possibly) figured it out. If measuring the mold in square cm, the 70% is a “conversion” to oil weight in grams (despite volume vs weight). If you’ll please check my work, 952 square cm is = 666 grams TOTAL weight. Based on 35% water, that’d be a 433 grams of oil?

Such an amazing video. Love the way you teach soapmaking in such interesting way. i live in India and have learnt a lot from your videos. I have a question - my soaps start oozing oil and start getting rancid when the weather gets humid. I live in a very dry place, but when it rains and gets humid, my soaps go bad. Any suggestions on how i can prevent this. why does this happen?
