This movie takes me back to my childhood. Even at a young age I "got it", and understood the deeper meaning of the film and it struck me. I've showed it to others and they're like "that was dumb" and didn't get the deeper meaning behind it. You can't explain it you just know. Top 5 movies of all time imo.

Nicholson is great in this scene, but my favorite part is the friendly way Fonda says: "Yeah? You got a helmet?" He's the moral backbone of the movie - eager for the future but still respectful of other people's traditions.
@DivineSimply5 жыл бұрын
Very well said. That was my generation. And my one biggest criticism of us was just that - in all our arrogant youth and exuberance for The Message, we were unable to show that respect for anyone different from ourselves. Tribal, snobbish, and morally superior. But that's kids for you. What a ride it was.

It's not a classic, it's the embodiment of everything wrong with the boomers and a chronicle of how they blew it for the nation and their children and their children's children's children. Boomers should off themselves to mitigate what damage they can from all the horrors they've unleashed on this once great nation. Boomers will be dead and dying in droves soon and believe me, they will not be missed. Worst generation ever, a warning to all futurity of what not to be.

Dennis, a memorial Memorial Day. You loved New Mexico after coming to know it somewhat after making Easy Rider. You purchased a place right across the Ranchos de Taos church of St. Francis, and one day I met you on the road in front of your place . I own this movie on DVD and I have the amazing soundtrack on vinyl. This is literally one of my favorites. My parents saw it in the theater because of the hype but they didn't like it. They've never smoked and I think they're the only two in both their families in their generation who haven't. My brother and I were hoping to change that, but that's just weird and hard to do! LOL! ✌🏾

One evening, KZbin introduced me this movie clip with some reason. I watched it, and interested in the movie so I watched the movie finally. I'm 51 yo man, I've never watched this movie properly, it was very famous movie, but it was certainly an old movie, so most young people around me no longer spent much attention to it in my adolescence. I watched it, and eventually I found that I can relate to the theme more than I thought. The fundamental issue of the human society is still the same, and sadly still many of the dumb and cruel people out there(Trump era showed me ton of those kind of people exist in America). The ending was really heart breaking, in fact it left me in a few days of depressed mood... Human already created many of master pieces like this, but even though human society hadn't got improved that much...

Why all the hippie theme movies of this era have some scenes where the young men and middle ages in the middle of no where and look like they lost in time, like a cowboy in the desert next to a tree, except that it not old wild west anymore? I like it but I don't know why or what lead to that theme. By the way, the title in my country is "mad racer", while in fact they did ride it very easy, thry enjoyed the ride!

You know, I’m going to hazard a guess that a lot of the stories regarding Dennis’ and Peter’s long hair, such as being unable to rent hotel rooms and get service at diners and restaurants, to be marketing gimmicks and publicity stunts. Peter’s hair isn’t even long (not to me anyway), and Dennis is rocking a classic, quintessential late-60s look that had already been around for years by this point, which was 1969; the late stage, where it wasn’t anything new or shocking anymore, surely. And just like another commenter said somewhere (I don’t remember which clip), some of the Southern stereotyping was a bit overblown and unfair especially when, again, you already had bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and such. But Hollywood is Hollywood and famous actors are famous actors - Peter Fonda, being who he was, could’ve had green hair and still been able to check into a hotel and eat at a diner in 1969, he’s a famous actor for crying out loud. So yeah, I think these anecdotes are overstated at least.
@pepper51282 жыл бұрын
You have a solid point, but I think you're wrong in describing them as 'marketing gimmicks and publicity stunts,' first of all they are neither of these things because they would not achieve the effect of marketing or bringing publicity to anything. It's more so supposed to be analogous to not fitting in; being an outcast to civilization in general. At the same time , admittedly, the story does have a highly dramatized depiction of the United States and its people, but it is a film after all. Much of fiction is a highly dramatized depiction of reality anyway. No-one should assume that films and real life are the same and I would hope no-one does. I live on the other side of the Earth and I've grown up in a different time, but I still relate to it; not because I've been kicked out of any restaurants or denied hospitality but because the film is using dramatization to get across a somewhat metaphysical message about society. Nevertheless, you do have a good point.

Easy Rider was made in first half of 1968 when there was no Lynyrd Skynyrd yet. While Easy Rider was shot, MLK and RFK were shot, too. In earlier scouting trips Hopper "discovered" Taos and other places, but also encountered some hostility. As a result, Hopper expressed dislike about Texas, and got trouble with Texans Terry Southern and Rip Torn. Even though the crew had to cross the lone star state in two or three riding days according to Fonda, no scenes were shot there. These scenes with Nicholson as passenger in desert areas were shot in NM, going the wrong way. Then, a sudden jump to Louisiana. Also, of about 80 hours of film, 78 were discarded and are lost.

Interesting. Jack drinks bourbon in both EASY RIDER and THE SHINING. The difference is that it's Jim Beam in EASY RIDER, Jack Daniels in THE SHINING. Since J.D. is generally known to be a step up from Jim Beam, we could say that the difference in brands is analogous to Jack Nicholson's rise in the cinematic hierarchy. I'm waiting for Film Comment to do an essay on this theme.
