How Pentatonic Scales were explained to me was its the full scale(s) without the tension notes. So any half-step that does not help define the chord. As always, Thanks Phil!

Philip, love your channel. It's been really helpful to me in starting to learn bass. Here's a video idea (suggested selfishly, b/c it would help me :) How to use the this scale practically w/in music (w/ guitar I can solo/improvise and play rhythm, but on bass I am pretty stuck on rhythmic root note lines... And thank you!!!

Philip I really like your channel! It's been super useful for me. Im a guitar player and I recently started playing bass in a band with my friends. Im new to playing live and we are getting ready for our first gig. Could you do a video on what things you should take into account when playin bass on a live setting? Eg: how to dial your tone, how to do a sound check, what amp should I bring to the gig...etc. I have a bass and I've been using the amp that we have on the practice room we rent for rehearsals. I don't know if I should rent an amp and later buy one or buy one so I already have one for more shows. Thanks for the videos and all the info, keep the videos coming!!

Hi there! So glad to have you here. Those are great ideas for topics to cover. I’ll do my best to include them in the future (although I can’t promise when). I am glad the channel is helpful for you and I hope you stick around. More videos on the way!

Plot twist: There’s actually one pentatonic scale, played in two modes.

These are great - I'm a guitar player, just getting into bass. I'd love a lesson on developing basslines in 1970s pop and blues/rock contexts. How do you choose what to play over a chord chart for example?

Unfortunately I knew this but if I was starting out it would have been damn useful and well explained. That said playing the full scales to highlight the difference between m & M and better demonstrate finger per fret would have been cool M root starting with 2nd finger 24124134 & m root starting with 1st 13413413. What I want to know is how or where I slap to avoid harmonics I'm aiming for a single thumped out note that has no added complexity but just can't get it.

Hi Phillip! Question: On G Major it goes... 1, 2, 3 (WHERE IS THE FOUR?), 5, 6 / 1, 2, 3. And then on G Minor: 1, (WHERE IS THE 2?), 3, 4, 5 (WHERE IS THE 6?), 7 / 1, (WHERE IS THE 2?), 3, 4. So, why are these numbers being skipped? Also, would they ever be included? Please give a little detail and insight. Thanks! My daughter and I are learning from your channel and appreciate the feedback!

Great question! The numbers refer to the note order of the major scale (which goes 1-7). We are skipping some notes to create a 5 note scale instead (which is what the term pentatonic scale means). We are skipping the 4 and 7 of the major scale to create a simplified scale that sounds really nice. So the notes are 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. You could include them but it would be a major scale instead, not a pentatonic scale. I hope this helps clear things up…

I played guitar for years and never noticed that the Major Pent was 1, 2, 3, 5, 6.

I just realized that the blue note in the minor scale (b5) is the same blue note (b3) in the major scale. That’s why that note works in either major or minor pentatonic. It’s the same note!!
