Once I graduate Jobcorps (Ceremony is on November 17th YAY) and get settled back home I will be in U23 co-Ed rec (beer) league and still use these drills. They’re my fall back when I get frustrated or not feeling 100%. Still learning how to lift the puck.

I found that standing in front of the net to tip pucks to be excellent motivation for my 8u to want to practice shooting. 😄

I am currently coaching U11 (House league) with kids that have lower skills with shooting and the head coach is using weighted pucks that I completely disagree with. Some kids it is their first yr in Hockey. I think this is definitely wrong. Any opinions? Thx

Yes, he should go in the opposite direction. It's very demotivating if kids can't lift the puck. With a weighted puck they may be doing everything correctly as far as their technique goes, but still not be able to generate enough power or quickness to lift the puck. If he were to use light pucks it would be much more forgiving and give the kids early success. They are not as strong, so the lighter pucks will reward proper technique, and once they have good mechanics they will see more success with the regular weight pucks

@@howtohockeytraining Thanks coach for affirming what we know is common sense. I have been told to go along to get along, which to me is irrational in this case. My job is to help the kids to improve and have confidence as well enjoy practices somewhat

Okay quick question: why don't you have him face his toes in the direction he's shooting? I thought that was the new method of shooting, as opposed to having your feet pointing 90 degrees compared to the target?

For new players it's easier for them to get the power the way I show here, especially for kids. They don't have the upper body strength and quickness yet to generate enough force to lift the puck. Once they learn to shoot the way I'm showing then you can start to add the other method. Even in the pro levels the style I show is still used, it can be used when coming out of a corner, or cutting across the ice, walking the blue line, etc.

@@howtohockeytraining Ah, okay. So it sounds like you're saying that shooting while facing the net is an additional skill that can be learned later. I realize now after reading your response that being able to use both is essential because they are both important. Thanks!

Yup, just relax and enjoy it. It might be overwhelming but pick one thing to try to do like try to be the first player to the puck, or the hardest worker on the ice each shift. After the game think about any skills that might have helped you and work on those at home and at practice

need to update the description to clearly indicate this is for very beginners @ U9, since a lot of players already have 3 years of hockey under their belt by the time U9 rolls in, so they certainly won't see any use for such drills. top ones by this age (or even U8) can shoot both front and back foot.
