Holy Crap!! I wish I would have watched your video a month ago. I had on surgical gloves, but while shaving off some meat after maceration, I punctured my finger ever so slightly, just a slight prick. 4 days later my finger blew up and was absolutely infected. Since then, I have been on 3 rounds of antibiotics and probably going to have to have a doctor slice open my index finger and irrigate it. To anyone who follows 5M, what he said about infection is absolutely true and important!

Your videos are awesome and I wish I had found them earlier. My husband usually does our skulls but I thought I would try it out myself so he gave me a down and dirty period of instruction then let me have at it. I didn’t use the maceration process, instead I fleshed out my skull then boiled it with water, 1/2 cup of baking soda and a heavy squirt of Dawn Dish Soap. During the boil I added some Landmark TSP Heavy Duty Cleaner, about 1/3 cup. When the meat started coming off I cleaned/power washed all the skulls until clean. I let them dry over night, then I put the creme mixture on the skulls for 24 hours, then rinsed. My question is, can I re-whiten a skulls that I have already whitened with a powder lightener/40 volume creme developer mixture after boiling and cleaning? I did 1 mule deer and 2 black bear skulls in the same manner together. All skulls have areas that are grayish and it appears that there is a little bit of flaking on areas of the skulls, but not much. Also, the bear skulls appear to still have grease in the skulls. Can I rehydrate these skulls in water and use your whitening method without damaging the skulls? I really want them to be nice and white and I would like to get the remaining grease out of the bear skulls. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Sounds like you need to degrease more then re whiten. Bears and hogs are almost impossible to degrease and can take months.

Can I just dump the water I use onto the ground next to a river? I'm sure there is probably some run off of the 5 gallons but those natural bacteria won't hurt anything right?
@rachellynn42022 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you’ll answer, but what is a benefit in using the developer opposed to some peroxide? I just recently got into this myself, and trying to learn as much as I can!
@OurTopPinLife2 жыл бұрын
Regular peroxide isn't as strong as the developer. Using the salon strength developer will make the white in the bone pop. I'm sure regular peroxide would work, but it may be more time consuming and won't get bright white results. Hope this helps!
@rachellynn42022 жыл бұрын
@@OurTopPinLife It definitely is a big help! I have a ton of 20 & 30 volume developer on hand. My next question though, the smaller the species should I reduce the amount of time it’s in it?
@OurTopPinLife2 жыл бұрын
For smaller species we use the cream developer with a whitening powder. Both can be found at the salon store. We have found the smaller ones are super fragile, and tend to fall apart when they are put in the hot developer. The cream method is less harsh. You just paint it on, and leave it in the sun for the day. It will be just as white!

How many times can you reuse the 20 volume peroxide and how do you store it after using it?
@OurTopPinLife3 жыл бұрын
I re-use it until it looses it's strength. I store it in a 5 gallon bucket

is there a way to repair the split between the nasals on top, or is that just part of the process when they are degreasing/drying?
@OurTopPinLife Жыл бұрын
If you take a rubber band, and close the gap, then add a super thin layer along the crack, it will hold after it dries.

That skull could be done in half the time if you change the water every 2-3 days. If you want to keep the lower jaw in tact take it out a few days earlier.
@OurTopPinLife3 жыл бұрын
I can do them in 4 days in my maceration tank without changing the water. Bacteria is what breaks down the flesh. When you change the water you throw away most of the bacteria...

Thank you for your detailed explanation, Can this process be done for smaller skulls?

Yes. In fact, this is the process we use on most smaller animals.

Not gross to me. If you soak it long enough the hide should come off. Be careful to not loose any of the small teeth.

Yes. Then add water to the 3/4 line of the pot. It can be reused multiple times, as you will see when it starts to loose its strength. Things won't whiten as much.
