first i was a bit disappointed that this is not about some supersecret hack how to backup the proxmox host via PBS, but this actually highlighted some hidden problems in my homelab I would have otherwise realized only once my host crashes

Awesome. Quick and to the point. Confirms my setup is on par with yours. Now I just need to configure backing up the hosts using the Helper Script. May be a good video on how to do that and how to save it to the Nas and do a restore of the actual host.

Good idea. Will check that out.

You can backup Proxmox HOST using PBS. I have demonstrated that in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoeVhpuGo7GNgbs

Thank you for that excellent video! One question: will this backup the config files of the LXC and the fstab file? I have a passthrough of an igpu configured in the config file and a samba share mounted to the LXC via fstab and the config file. I wonder if that would be restored with the method you presented?
@MRPtech2 ай бұрын
Correct me if i am wrong, your samba fstab file is located inside LXC container, or should be located in LXC container, that file will be backed up as it is part of the LXC container. Config file for igpu on the other hand is located inside proxmox HOST os. You need to backup proxmox host OS too to make sure that config file is backed up. You can backup proxmox os using PBS, i've demonstrated that inside : kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoeVhpuGo7GNgbs off topic: How you managed to get igpu shared with LXC container :)

Why not use an LXC for PBS if running a single node? Similair to any applications I would put on my PVE host.
@MRPtech2 ай бұрын
Inside single node - LXC is a good option. I went with VM due to migration feature. During migration, VMs getting migrated while in "live" state where LXC containers will be shutdown and started up again after migration. During that migration, LXC container is not functioning.
@bpinsel404113 күн бұрын
Why did you put the pbs into a vm and not like the other others into an lxc? I actually do prefer the lightweigt lxc's ... Thx.
@MRPtech9 күн бұрын
LXC is lightweight but when you have proxmox cluster and you want to migrate LXC to another node, lxc migration happens in restart mode, which means that lxc will be shutdown, migrated and started from 0. VM migrations happening live. VM will continue to function during migration where LXC container will not

What about the Proxmox server configuration? Like if you configured nut (ups), will the backup contain all those manual changes you made?
@MRPtech2 ай бұрын
To backup proxmox HOST using PBS you need to use script. I've demonstrated that in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoeVhpuGo7GNgbs

Backing up Proxmox HOST will backup everything that is inside Proxmox HOST. every .... single .... file ....

This process focuses on restoring VMs from Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) rather than a complete Proxmox Node restoration. Currently, I have not found a method to fully restore a Proxmox Node within a cluster from PBS, especially when additional software like Netdata, Cronicle, and LibreNMS agents are installed on the host. Do you have any recommendations or insights on achieving a full node restoration?
