Good video , I did that texture here in Texas back in early 70's we called it crowfoot drag , it was mostly done in dining rooms and entry halls.We made it thicker and just knocked the tips down.This was before light mud and we had to wait along time before it was ready to drag.

I have found that many textures go by a number of different names. Even some of the common textures just have different names in different parts of the country. But I have heard it called a Crowfoot texture before. Thanks for sharing, and welcome in to our community.

My whole house is in this texture, do love the look but sure do like orange peel and knock down better. Just remodeled our master bath room left the stomp on the ceiling and did knock down on the new drywall. Haven’t perfected this look quite yet but will practices a little more after watching your video.. thanks for the how to..

Thank you for your video. I scraped a popcorn ceiling and used the brush by applying the mud onto the brush and stamping it onto the ceiling to lightly texture my ceiling. It was quick and easy, not messy and looks great! I’m going to start working on another room doing the same method.

Hi Guy. That’s exactly how I did my walls, I mentioned in those other comments you replied to. It’s a very similar technique to a stucco finish some call ‘travertine’. The troweling is done in horizontal sweeps to mimic strata in stone. I waited until it set a bit, then gently knocked it down with a 16” rounded pool trowel. Its a heavy texture, but it left some nice shadow effect. If the brush application is done with a slightly circular twist motion, and then radial troweling, its called ‘peacock’. They were more commonly used many years ago by Italian plasterers. Not as much these days. My wife then painted it with me. We did a base color first with a roller, then followed with a light sponge wash in a similar, but slightly different shade, after the first coat dried. Both are yellow/ocher shades. I think the base was Palomino Gold, and the top coat was Venetian Stucco. It gave it a subtle, slightly mottled look. I’m gonna try that roller application you suggested over the popcorn. Probably a while yet before I tackle that, but I’ll let you know how it turns out. Love your videos! Thanks again!! 👍🏼

I like the stomp texture before the knock down. I am just learning to play with mud at 77 years old. I did an entire bedroom in a rough texture just using my hands and love it but was time consuming to paint. I am attempting a bathroom ceiling next and think this stomp texture will work. Thanks for the video.

Hi, like the sponge hint. I've done many knock down patches and have found it much easier and blends better to let the mud dry completely and then sand it for the knock down. Using a blade it tends to ride on the old texture and translate ridges to the new patch.

Just ran across your videos. I have to do some ceiling repair due to cracks, my ceiling looks like a stomp texture but looks like the tape is pulling away. Do I need to remove this tape and add new to this area or just try to put some mud underneath the edge to reseal it. Not very smart on this stuff. Thanks for any input. Have watched a number of your videos and enjoyed them all. Thanks for helping those of us out here that are just trying to get by.

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I was asked to match a similar texture two years ago for a customer. I thought it looked like mud applied with a roller (I used a 1/2" Purdy Colossus) and then a small knock down knife
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY

Matching textures is one of the toughest Art aspects of doing repairs. Knowing how to coat a repair properly is one thing, but then having to match a texture, that's a whole nother level. Some are easy, like orange peel textures, but the knockdown can be quite tricky since you have to guess at the size, thickness and density of drops to spray on, then let it sit 5 minutes, and then knock it down to see what it looks like. But hand textures can sometimes be the worst. There's literally dozens and dozens of ways to apply a custom, or hand texture and even I can know them all. So sometimes we have to use our best guestimate and hope it works. 99% of the time, it does for me, but I've done probably 5,000 repairs by now, over 15 years of doing nothing but small jobs. Thanks for the comments, and feel free to add more thoughts if you have them. Guy

I liked it better knocked down. As somebody who does knockdown texture is fairly regular the only downfall to this one as you have to apply the mud on the ceiling vs spraying. But I definitely see why this would be a good thing to show a homeowner because yeah they would be able to do this without hiring somebody whereas I sprayed knockdown would be a little harder.

Very helpful info, thank you! I prefer the knock down look. I have a lot of orange peel texture on my walls that I hate, so I want to get rid of it with a different texture. The walls have been painted with semi gloss paint. Is joint compound going to stick to that paint, or do I need to prep it in some way?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes you can get rid of a texture like orange peel by skim coating. But when you go over a glossy surface you need to de gloss it and give the mud something to bite to. You can do that by sanding it with some pretty coarse sandpaper like 60 grit or 80 grit. And then you might want to use either hot mud, or the green label all purpose as it sticks better. You might also want to watch my skim coating video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGa6aoyih7d7pNE Let me know if you have further questions..

Hey we can't afford to join as a member bc all our remodel work doing on our own but in your experience doing numerous different textured ceilings which method uses the least amount of mud product? Gotta save money, also do you recommend adding paint primer instead of water for thinning or does that just use more paint bc you'll have to go back over with solid all over paint layer anyway for proper sealing of mud? Thank you so much in Advance and Im happy I found your page and best wishes for business success!

Thank you for this video. We recently purchased a house with a texture I had never seen before. It was very fine raised lines around 3" to 4" in length going in all different directions. Previous owners had cut a pass thru into the wall between the kitchen and dining room which we closed up. I debated just skim coating both sides of the wall but decided to buy a stomp brush to see if I could copy the pattern. I tried dipping the brush into thin mud but it was way too busy. I will try a thin mud coat on the wall first as you showed and see if that works better. By the way how do you suggest I dry my stomp brush to keep it flat? Thanks so much.

Hello and thanks for the question. For this texture you can use most any all purpose mud, or a topping mud. I'm using the USG Plus 3 mud for this example. If you use other muds, (aka Joint Compound), be sure to read the box and make sure it's ok for textures or decorating.

Hey “That Kilted Guy”, I love your video. I’m remodeling my living and dining rooms and this texture is on the ceiling. I have removed the molding and have areas where it looks like they put up the crown molding before the mud dried completely and has left line marks where the molding was. I’m not putting up the same type of molding and I’m afraid it will show if I don’t fix it. I was thinking about just scraping the whole ceiling and not putting a texture back on. My question is this, how can I hide these marks? Should I just scrap off these areas and reapply the texture? And if so, will it blend easily with the current texture? TIA, Karlene
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY

A light scraping and retexturing would probably blend pretty decent. I find this texture to be one of the harder ones to blend- sometimes. If you decide to scrape it off, check out this video -🟢Smoothing Out A Wall by Skim Coating it - LEVEL 5 Babys Butt Smooth

@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Just sanding can be enough. But if you want extra adhesion, you can add some wood glue, like 1/4 cup per box. It makes the mud feel a little more sticky, but nothing terrible. Note that regular weight all purpose has the most adhesive from the manufacturer, lightweights a little less, and topping has the least.

This type of texture is one that takes a lot of experimenting. Experiment with different mud thicknesses, and you might try adding a half cup of paint per gallon of mud, and even different brushes. But more likely it’s going to require several coats of paint to soften it out like that once you get the pattern close.
