I should have done this before wasting two hours to change a perfectly good thermostat and dumping a gallon of coolant on my driveway. I hope I can reach those leads without pulling the whole fan out. I’m going to try this tonight before I change out the coolant temperature sensor on my 98 CRV.

Yeah, you don't have to take the fan out to jump it! Hopefully you got the old girl sorted! Excel vehicle! If only the transmission would last as long as the engine!

Thank you for this video. I'm in the process of troubleshooting warm A/C in my car and I think it is caused by the radiator/condenser cooling fan not switching to high speed whenever I turn on the A/C. It will just turn on to the lower speed but I do not think it provides sufficient airflow to the condenser. I do have some jumper wires that I can use to test the fan in the manner that you did.

You can also carefully tap the fan motor while the engine is up to temp. If the fan moves, the fan is failing. It will need to be changed.

I changed the sensor switch on top of the thermostat and the 2 sensors below the distributor and my cooling fan doesnt come on when u turn on the ac and it's supposed to but never does. I checked my relays and fuses and they're fine. I thought maybe my fan needs to be replaced but I ran alligator clips from the cooling fan directly to the battery and the cooling fan came on with no problem. So my question is why isnt my cooling fan turning on when I turn on the ac???? The fan on the driver side comes on without any problems.

How about if neither fan comes on? I have 2 in my CRV, one for the engine and one for the condenser.

Is there a way to test the fan(s) while it is still in place? Do you recommend OEM fans, or cheaper aftermarket fans? I'd like to not have to do this again for the next 100,000 miles! Can you recommend quality replacement fans? Thanks for this, and the other video, really helpful.

There is a tool called Power probe,there is cheaper versions.It is like a test light but it also gives you the option to add 12 volt power to what ever you touch with the tip.Test power window motors,sunroofs,lights,anything with a electric motor.And its good practice to disconnect your battery when doing electrical diagnostic trouble shooting to not create further damage or to something else.

@@robmendoza6210 Thanks Rob, so you'd just unplug each fan, and give them each 12 volts from the Power Probe? This would bypass the car's battery, so that is safer? What kind of amperage does the Power Probe put out? What kind of amperage do the fans take? Could I plug in a 12v wall wart adapter, like a standard 12v AC to DC power adapter and use that as a power probe to power the fan motors? Again, I wonder as to the fan's amperage rating? I've got a variety of 12v adapters that go from like 200mA, to like 2A. I should be able to spin a fan, if they are working, but if I hit it with lower amperage, it might not spin too fast, mimicking a dead fan, right? Assuming I'm able to power up and spin each fan... what do I need to test from there, relays? Switches? How do I test those? See, it is a pain in the butt being helpful! Thanks again!

@@robmendoza6210 It's the time consumption itself that is painful, and why I appreciate people who share their knowledge. I lived in a time before we could share information like this, and this is amazing, but it still requires people willing to put in the time. I'm so thankful for them. I don't disrespect them for their efforts. If they fall short, I'll fill in what I perceive as gaps, trust me in that! I can't find anywhere on the web how many amps the 2005 crv's various fans pull. But I can find that Civics of the same vintage pull anywhere between 8 and 10 amps! That's a lot! I don't have a 12 volt adapter that puts out that kind of amperage, I'll have to go for unconnecting the negative of the car battery, and running the battery with jumper cables and screw drivers as probes right into the fans to see if they'll spin up! Thanks for your help, and if you have more to share, please do!

005 crv keeps bloeing the 20 amp guse for the condenser fan everytime I turn ac on. We unplugged compressor and it still blew fuse. Then we unplughed condender fan and it still blee a fuse. The condenser fan is the one on the passanger side, right?
@BudgetMechanicHawaii
@BudgetMechanicHawaii Жыл бұрын
Not sure which side it’s on sorry. See which fan goes on when the car warms up without AC on. (The one not running is condenser fan) If still blowing fuse with fan unplugged you must have a wire or something shorting out before the fan. Check all your wires leading back from the fan

my 2009 crv AC issues started with replacing the AC clutch relay 6 yrs ago, then last year i replaced the AC clutch and compressor. recently it was blowing cool not cold air. i checked the freon and the levels were below average so i wanted to top it off, then all of a sudden the freon gauge went nuts and all of a sudden i heard the all too familiar back and forth clicking of the AC clutch. i went ahead and replaced the clutch relay again to the same results. BUT i noticed that while the AC clutch was clicking off and on....the cooling fan was never on the whole time and i just noticed it. I want to replace the cooling fan, but would that also take care of the AC clutch clicking off and on?
@BudgetMechanicHawaii

Your fan should always come on when ac is turned on, so I would definitely look into that. I would be surprised if the fan would cause ac engagement problems but it sounds like you may need to get some help from someone who can diagnose it in person and get a good ac machine on there

And this is what happens when a lawyer tries to give good automotive advice. At minimum tell your viewers to disconnect the battery negative from the car,and check other methods of fan testing before trying it.Good luck!!

Rob, at least he spent the time making this and the other video to help people out. The other video of fan removal is really helpful. You just dissed him, and hinted at other ways, but didn't even share your better ways in a comment... shooting and editing, rendering and uploading a video takes a lot of time and effort. So, serious thanks to this dude for taking the time to share what he knows. Maybe he doesn't know everything, there are always 20 ways to do some fix or test on a modern car, so, can you step up and tell us why we need to remove the battery negative from the car, and the other methods of testing the fan before removing it? I hope you will, because it'd really help me, and many others, out!
