Excellent video! Big help! However, I wanted to add something to it that I found out in my 72 hour overheating diagnosis. HOPEFULLY, it will save someone else a lot of headache. I spent 3 full days researching what my problem was. 2014 Mustang V6 was operating fine UNTIL I turned on the AC; then it would overheat. I popped the hood and realized that the fan was not running when the engine reached high temp. I tested the fans, relays, fuses per your instructions - everything checked out (SO I THOUGHT). The actual problem was the Fan High Speed relay. It had continuity during testing with 12v and multimeter; but failed under the actual load in the vehicle. SO, I strongly suggest that if you hit a brick wall; swap out the relay with another working relay (in my case it was the relay for the starter). Soon as I swapped it out, the starter was dead; switched back and it was fine. Bought a new relay for $21 with lifetime warranty and I have been good to go! Hope this helps someone!

Excellent diagnostic, here ! Clear and simple. 1st, check the fuse ! Also, in a pinch, you can swap the #1 relay with one of the other relays on the same number designation. Swap the two & see if your fan issue is resolved. #1 relay should hold the coolant temp at ~ 190*F, even on a hot day.

all of that is helpful but missed one part way in the back there the thermostat housing is a switching unit " coolant temperature sensor " if this is not functioning it doesn't send the " click on " signal to the relays and thus fans don't run this can be caused by electronic failure or the thermostat itself is not opening to allow the coolant thru the pipe to the sensor as u showed with this video all the easy to reach stuff was tested and working so for non working fan under these test cases relays / wireing / fan moters done would inverably be the CTS switch or a blocked thermostat port

EXCELLENT VIDEO! I'm having a current issue where my fans won't turn on. I've spent so much money on new relays, fan temp switch sensor, ECT sensor, and still my fans won't run. If I disconnect the connector that terminates at the fan temp switch sensor then my fans come on full blast. If I reconnect that same connector back to the engine harness the fans turn off (meaning there is continuity) and if I go and turn on my a/c the fans run on low. So, I know my fans are working and I have a Relay Buddy tester and verified that all three fan relays are fully functional. So, I conclude that there's def an issue with the relay box / battery area and where it grounds, I think. Because when the fan temp switch sensor hits its temp range and sends its ground signal, that signal is not reaching the ECM is what I am thinking.

Hi thanks for your videos.. I'm a subscriber. When testing the radiator fan harness connector, is it a must that we know the way that the harness connector ports are set up ? Or Can we simply place the positive test lead in any harness connector port and then place the ground test lead into each individual relay port to hear that beep to test for continuity ? Making sure to repeat this process for each and every radiator fan harness connector port (4+ ports). I also noticed that you tested only one (#1) harness connector port with the positive test lead touching the ground test lead to the relay port (#5) and verified continuity. I understand that this verified continuity for that specific port but should we check EVERY PORT because is it possible that one port can have continuity but another one of those ports in the same fan connector, etc. be defective while the other port is simultaneously okay making us assume that that continuity check came out ok when in fact part of that connector could be defective while the other part is okay ? Or once you verify continuity in 1 port, is it unnecessary to check the remaining ports ? Sorry about being excessive just trying to be thorough. Thanks. Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.

If there's no 12 volt source at the dist box could be more likely an open circuit than a short. Good tip on tracing from box to wiring connector. Another thing is people think if the a.c. powers the fans on that all is good. The problem is the a.c. doesn't control the fans when in use for regular engine cooling.

Also, checking for continuity in the harness will tell you if it open, but if it is shorted out it will also still have continuity. Better to check to see if the hot lead is shorted to ground first, then power the circuit and see if you have power at the connector

@@marcosd4381 If you disconnect the battery positive terminal, then use a multimeter set to test resistance ( ohms), then you put one of the meter probes ont the battery negative terminal and use the other probe on the connector in question, you should have 0 ohms resistance on the ground pin and some resistance on the positive pin. If you see 0 ohms resistance at the positive pin, then the positive wire is, somewhere, shorted to ground. If you have some resistance there, reconnect the battery, place the meter on dc voltage setting, turn on the ignition and see if you have voltage across the pins of the connector. Be aware that there may not be voltage until the engine is at operating temperature, in the case of a cooling fan. This same test can be done at the cooling fan relay. In fact, that is the first location to check. If the voltage is present at the relay, then check to see if it is present at the fan connector. If it is not, then either the relay is bad or the wiring between the relay and the fan is bad. If there is voltage at the fan connector but the fan will not come on, then the fan is likely bad. Also be aware that if you probe the relay socket for voltage by putting the black probe lead at the battery negative terminal and using the red lead to check each pin of the relay socket, there shoukld be 12 volts or so at one of the pins. That is the voltage that will go through the relay to the fan when the relay is closed. If you do not see battery voltage at one pin, check the fuse and other wiring from battery positive to the relay connector. That is a basic check. I don't recall the details of this video, but will be happy to amplify my answer if you have more questions.

A great video and very detailed, although I am working on a hyundai, the process is still the same I just wonder tho, if the temp. sensor isnt working but the relays are good and the fans test good, would the fans still work? from what I saw in this video everything was working as normal so if we werent trying to fix this vehicle, why did we do the tests on this vehicle? I thought he said at the beginning the high speed wasnt working on this vehicle but all test showed that they were. as a mechanic I appreciate the detail of this video, not many people get into such detail, I would like to see this man do more video's.

Hi Leo. The fans were working perfectly fine. I just did a how-to video to show the steps involved if you do indeed have a problem.

Great detailed video. Thumbs up. BTW I was wondering if you don't have a fan resistor in your car or forgot about it if I may say?
@gilliwisemedia83532 жыл бұрын
That's what I was wondering.. I thought that was what controlled the fan to come on when you switch on the AC.
