I stumbled upon your video. I would say your content is light, simple, and really easy to understand and follow. Works great!

People are using SSDs for noise reasons. If you properly cleaned your PS2, the hard drive is going to be the loudest part about it. Also, there was an update to OPL by Grimdoomer, which supports ex fat hard drives. This way, you can just drag and drop your ISOs to the HDD. No need for HDL Installer.

Can you please tell me what video cables you are using and what kind of tv do you have? Thanks!

Yeah DualShock4 on PS2 feels so good, i use the 8BitDo Adapter that looks just like a PS1 memory card. My only problem is i use it directly to the HDTV and the interlaced is a mess... Theres no Retrotink products in my country

SSDs have two advantages over hard drives. While it's true that the PS2 can't take advantage of their speeds, heat and noise are significantly reduced, so those are factors to consider.

After 1.5 years, my ps2 and wii hhd started to lose games, and the one for the wii died. Start-ups started getting slower, too. I went ssd this time. I had a friend who bought two hhd duds. im never going back to hhd. lol

Seek time with a ssd will still be faster than a hdd, even with the PS2s limitations.

Also keep in mind that not many games work well with SSDs

Overall good list, though I have to strongly disagree with your take on an SSD. If budget is the main concern, go with a full size 3.5" SATA drive, but otherwise even a low end SSD is a better all around option. You are correct that raw data transfer speeds won't be impacted given the supported DMA transfer speeds of the PS2 but that isn't the only meaningful consideration. SSDs still provide a measurable speed benefit due to essentially zero seek times, and more importantly for some is the silence. SSD will also likely outlast any mechanical HDD but a 2.5" laptop HDD is the worst of both worlds as you get the noise and seek times and also they are much more fragile than full size 3.5" drives. On a couple side notes - many people have reliability issues with those 3rd party Gamestar network adapters failing and their network jack is actually fake. It is strongly recommended to instead use a real Sony network adapter (either version with the modem as well or the network-only). Second, if you use a hard drive/SSD of 2tb or less you can actually set it up with a hard drive version of FreeMCboot called Free HD Boot leaving more free space on your memory card solution. On that note there is a product called Memcard Pro 2 which is kind of a memory card emulator using a microSD card to create virtual memory cards essentially giving you unlimited memory card storage with even a tiny capacity 16gb microSD card. If you use this in conjunction with launching games via OPL from that internal drive, you can even set up the MCP2 to automatically detect which game you've loaded and switch to a dedicated virtual memory card for that exact game.

Does a sata III work just as well? Can ps1 games be loaded on? And am I able to buy one from someone pre-loaded? I have a mac, and not very tech savvy.
@kalmtraveler3 ай бұрын
@@teleskopossomnium SATA of any generation are all backwards/forwards compatible with each other. The end speeds will be determined by whichever piece is slower - in this case the PS2 is the slowest link in the chain so max transfer speeds are limited to what it can handle, that's why there's no raw data transfer speed benefit from swapping an old IDE mechanical HDD to a modern SATA SSD - the bottleneck was the PS2 itself even back then. Yes there is a PS1 emulator for the PS2 but compatibility is not as good as modern emulators for PC or mobile devices. You probably could find something pre-loaded but I don't know where to find something like that. The internet is a big place.

Free HD Boot does boot up noticeably slower than Free MCBoot. Just something to be aware of.
@kalmtravelerАй бұрын
@@GreaseLightning02 yeah I timed it last month after a discussion in I think PixelFX's (the Retro GEM company) discord - on my 50001 console with console-specific FMCB that takes as I recall about 14 seconds from button press to being able to scroll the menu, FHDB was about 22 seconds - so definitely noticeable but 8 seconds doesn't really bother me at this point in life.
