Painting a mural on brick can be pretty daunting, especially if you are beginner at painting murals. But as long as you have the right tools, you'll be set up for success! So I wanted to share some tips for how my wife and I finished up one of our brick murals for a local coffee shop called Summer Moon! It was a ton of fun, pretty challenging, and of course, very rewarding. In this video, I share the tools we used to get the job done, from paint brushes and paint, to different tips and hacks for making sure all of your letters and curves are super straight and precise. By the way, with the cleaning rags, definitely expect to throw them away after use. The brick is going to leave reside, but the point is getting the brick to be as dust free as possible, so sacrificing the rag is super worth it.
One thing I did forget to mention in the video is the different between painting brick outside and inside. For this project, obviously it was inside since it was inside the coffee shop, but the tips honestly apply the same for outside. The only thing you'll need to think about is how the weather will affect the mural that's on the outside. And this just determines the strength of paint you need, or if you need to go over your mural with a stronger sealant. For latex paint, I would just visit your Home Depot, Lowes, or a local paint store. It shouldn't be more than about $30 a gallon in whatever color you need! Obviously it might get a little pricey if you need a whole bunch of colors, but you could also try just regular acrylic paint for details and seal it with something like Krylon or something else to make it all weather proof.

Hey! I'd love to know if there's a way to preserve or transplant something from a really old painted brick wall. We have a mural that's probably 10-15 years old. It's got a couple kids handprints on it that we'd love to find some way to either save on the wall or some way to get the paint off to transplant it off the brick wall to somewhere else. I don't even know if that is possible. I'd love your ideas on how that could be done.

This sounds very interesting! Unfortunately I don't have any idea of transferring paint from a brick wall to something else. I'm afraid any attempt to remove it while preserving shape will result in damaged brick.

Great question! I would still go with latex paint. It's strong and dries nicely on top of old paint.

Hey there! For the finer details around the borders of the letters, we were using a 1/4 of an inch size brush, sometimes a 1/8 of an inch size if we felt like we needed to round out curves.

The Latex paint I used had primer in it. But, generally it wasn't really necessary for this (especially since the brick is inside, won't have any weather effects).

Hey there! With respect to the client, I won't say the exact amount, but I will give a range: between $500-800 dollars. Since this is only one color (white), I take that into account, as well as the supplies I need (paint, brushes, etc). As well as the size. This was a little over 7 feet tall, so it was a big mural.

is this mural reversible? I heard paints are damaging to the brick

It depends on if you are looking for a permanent mural or not. You can try out vinyl on brick, but I feel like taking it off will be just as messy/hard to get off.

So you don't prime the brick first, because you're using latex paint...
