Tip, when cutting in, ;eave about a half of an inch gap between the edge and your paint line. The reason for that is once the paint dries a bit you go back and do the final cut in, the paint brush will move over the painted surface much smoother and much easer to control those fine motor skills and you will get a much better cut in without making the occasional mistake and getting paint on the ceiling or baseboard.

That idea about wrapping film around brush dipped in emulsion I've shown to amateurs. With solvent paints similarly you can leave brush or rollers dipped in water. Then shake off water when use again. Or if you have in USA a Vapour Box called Brush Mate here in UK. Its basically a box engineered to store wet solvent brushes. It can last 6 to 8 months stored tightly. When you finish a job one day store in box shut the lid. Next day with remain soft. Its a great investment and saves time from constantly cleaning out solvent paints or a regular basis

Great video! Since we remove the tape when the paint is wet, Do I re-tape the area when I go back to do a second coat of cut in paint?
@mrsashleyfrench4 ай бұрын
I always do a thick coat for the cutting-in so that I don't have to go back and do a second coat. So I tape up my room, cut-in with a thick coat going over the area very generously with my paint (but without drips or runs) and then pull the tape off while the paint is still wet. Doing a nice thick coat with a brush is equivalent to doing two coats. :)

Hello! Amazing video, I will use the tips this weekend to paint my bedroom. I have one question, you have paint samples on the walls, same as me. One of my samples is quite a lot darker (dark green) and a different finish (vinyl matt) to the other 2 that are faded dark green and complete matt finish. Would you suggest I sand and paint that square of paint white/use a primer? I really don't want to spend lots of money and time and have this sample visible. Thank you in advance!!
@mrsashleyfrench2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't sand them since that may change the texture in that spot but I would recommend painting them with a primer or white paint if you have it. I didn't do that in this room and you could still slightly see my test spots on the wall even after I painted two coats in this room. I wish I had painted over mine first with primer.

Helpful video! But I have always been confused - by cutting in with a thick or semi-thick coat and then rolling another 1-2 coats of paint over that then doesn't the cutting in portion end up getting the equivalent of 4 coats of paint vs the wall getting 2 coats? I have done that in the past and it ends up looking like a ring of extra paint, especially around the ceiling/wall intersection. How do I avoid this?
@mrsashleyfrench2 ай бұрын
So I don't roll over the cut-in portion. I only roll up to the cut-in portion and just barely overlap it where the two areas meet. If you are using a quality paint, it won't matter if you do get some of the rolled paint onto the cut-in portion because after 2 coats of quality paint, the paint is as dark or pigmented as it will be (whether you layer 2 coats or 4). Now, if you are using a lower quality paint (like the cheapest one on the shelf), then it may actually take 3-4 coats of paint to reach the full depth of the color and in that case you may be able to see a difference in darkness between the cut-in area and the rest of the wall. Also, I had a friend paint with me once and she would put barely any paint on her roller and when she rolled the wall the layer of paint she was applying was so thin. If you do this, then your walls will take more than 2 coats to reach the full depth of the color and you would be able to see a difference between the cut-in and the rolled area. Make sure you have an adequate amount of paint on the roller and when the paint starts to roll thin, add more paint to the roller. :)

I’m about to do a similar navy in my son’s room and also want to paint the trim and baseboards. Should the trim be a different sheen of paint?
@mrsashleyfrench3 ай бұрын
The sheen doesn't have to be different but I will say that semi-gloss paint is much easier to wipe clean so most people use semi-gloss on the baseboards and trim. Since this was my office and my son doesn't come in this room much, I just used the same matte sheen in here since I don't think the trim will get dirty. Plus the darker color does help to hide fingerprints so I don't think I'll need to wipe the trim or baseboards much.

Was the paint still wet when you applied a second coat? If the wall you are painting has a darker color than the paint, would you apply a primer before the desired lighter color?
@mrsashleyfrench4 ай бұрын
No, the walls were pretty much dried when I applied the second coat. If you are using a good quality paint (not the cheapest brand in the hardware store), you typically don't need to use a primer. Most quality paints are now a paint+primer in one. The only time I have seen a primer needed is if the current wall color is a shade of red or burgundy and you want to paint it white. Otherwise, two coats of a good quality paint is usually all you need to cover an old color.

I always recommend peeling off wallpaper if possible. I would use a spray bottle, spray the wallpaper, let it sit for a few minutes and peel it off starting in the corner. You can also use a clothes steamer to steam the wallpaper first and then peel it off (steam in sections at a time). You can't really sand wallpaper, it will start tearing and shedding if you sand it. As an absolute last resort, if the wallpaper was become permanently stuck to the wall, you can seal it and paint over. I did that in this blog post of mine: mrsashleyfrench.com/blog-archives/budgetguestbathroommakeover?rq=bathroom

The whole W pattern is the perfect example of a terrible idea that gets passed around over and over and over again because people saw a video on it. Granted, most people are not an anal retentive nut bag like me, but I demand perfection from myself when painting. I mostly paint with 18 inch rollers because painting an entire room with a 9 inch roller is to time consuming in my opinion. I apply paint to the roller and start applying it to the wall exactly between the floor and ceiling. I go up to the ceiling and down to the floor in one smooth motion and repeat four times. I go back to my pan and reapply paint to my roller and then overlap the next roll about 2 inches into the previous roll, start in the middle of the wall and hit the up down, up down four times and repeat. Why I do it this way is that you are GUARANTEED to not have a single roller mark on the wall. The paint will be applied in a consistent manner from top to bottom. If you don't believe me, lay your head up against a wall and look down its length, if the painter is an amateur you will see roller marks ALL OVER the wall. If they are a pro, you will see nothing. Using the W and rolling is a bunch of different directions to fill it in is going to ALWAYS leave roller marks all over the wall as well as inconsistent paint thickness on the wall which will come out in the right light. When I was a painter full time I could roll out a two story three bedroom, two bathroom, living and dining room and kitchen in a single day with it coming out perfect.

@mrsashleyfrench6 ай бұрын
A lot of people will tell you not to clean your brushes out in your sinks inside your home but if that is your only option, that is fine. Just use a lot of water and let it run for a good bit so the water really dilutes the paint going down into your pipes and prevents any build-up from the paint.

Yes you could. It would just take longer. You'd want to make sure you aren't leaving any drips or paint strokes on the wall from the brush.

How many gallons should one room take …including second coat ?
@mrsashleyfrench4 ай бұрын
The paint cans usually say they will cover 350sqft of surface space which is roughly a 12ftx12ftx8ft height room with 4 walls. But I am usually able to get two full coats out of a one gallon can (especially if the room has a window, door, and closet since those openings take away from the total square footage of the paint surface). If you are painting an average bedroom, one gallon should do.

Why do you use short strips of painters tape which makes a sharp, continuous line very difficult. One long strip works better and gives an even line.
@mrsashleyfrench4 ай бұрын
With longer pieces, you chance stretching the piece when applying it to your surface and stretched tape won't have as good of a seal as non-stretched tape. This tip really is more for beginners. If you feel confident doing longer pieces, you certainly can :)

How do you get the paint to roll on the wall, all i manage to get is a blob, took 3 hrs of hard work trying to do one wall, and i had to use a brush too, i was exhausted and coukdnt bear to do another coat. How on earth do you get the roller to cover the wall?
@mrsashleyfrench8 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if I understand what is happening but It sounds like you have too much paint on your roller. Try putting less paint in your paint tray, then lightly roll your roller into the paint in the tray, then roll your roller in the paint tray on the slanted surface of the tray (where there is no paint) to get a lot of the excess paint off your roller. Then when you roll your roller on the wall, you shouldn't get any kind of blob or anything.

Hi, thanks for the reply, when I try gently rolling the roller over the paint it never really rolls. It's strange as many years ago I did all my decorating and used to love it, so I know I never had that issue before.

Just guessing but if you're rolling a water-based paint over a wall that previously had latex paint you've got to prime the wall first so the paint will bond.

I’m painting a large room and read that you should try to roll the wall while your cut in area is still wet so you don’t show brush marks. Is that necessary? Also do you cut in again for the second coat? If so, do you wait to remove tape until right after cutting in the second time?
@NicE-jq3wv6 ай бұрын
Your cut in line should never have to be done twice. One and done. It can dry completely before rolling. It doesn’t matter. The roller will cover any possible bare spots. It also doesn’t matter when you remove the tape.

I only do one semi-thick coat when I cut-in. I don't do two coats. I do try to roll the wall immediately after cutting in that wall so technically the edges of the paint are still wet but I do not think its matters if the cut-in has already dried. I also try to remove the tape when the paint is still wet but that's because I've been burned in the past with paint peeling off that I let dry on the tape for a few days. I have found that FrogTape brand tape is my fave and doesn't peel the dry paint off like some other brands.

A good tip, instead of using tape to remove lint from a roller. Give it a wash and scrub with your finger nails, also leave the roller slightly damp. This will aid in making the roller absorb paint easier as opposed to using a dry roller.

I recently bought a house and have just started the renovation process. However the walls are made out of concrete and are pretty slippery. How and where would I start I’m so confused and new to this somebody please help 😂
@mrsashleyfrench16 күн бұрын
If the concrete has a slippery finish, I would first paint it with Zinsser BIN Shellac Primer and then with your wall paint. The shellac primer is a bonding primer and will ensure that your new paint adheres to the wall without chipping off.
