I started growing jujube because of the Dirty Dancing movie; however, here in central Texas, it quickly took over a small ornamental garden. I finally had to get rid of them, and it was a ton of work. If I were going to grow it again, I would put it in an area where I could mow all the way around the patch and keep it in check.

I always enjoy your videos! I'm on the fringe on 9B and 10A here in Southwest Florida. I think less than 100 chill hours in my area. I'll have to check with the folks at Echo in Fort Myers. I believe they had a few of these plants. I'm always on the lookout for any plant that puts out copious amounts of blossoms while also providing me with yummy edibles. John, in the video you mentioned maybe it will grow in Georgia. Yes, Jujube trees do grow in Georgia. I have 7 of these. University of Georgia developed a new variety called Georgia 866 - which is the best jujube variety I have seen.

Grew up in India chasing the rip ones from one house to another. They grow up everywhere, and last for 2 months, and taste great. The smaller one are more tangy, and larges ones are more sweet. And if I remember, 2 trees can have very different tasting fruits. So was fun sampling it with friends from one house to another all summer before they got raided by other kids haha.

Most fruit trees if you use mulch n compost for fertilizers are low maintenance. Once every 2 or 3 years you trim them, & they water themselves lol . My home is like 40 fruit trees . The harvest is the most work but when you account for savings from not buying, even that is not that bad 🙂 ive got 3 veggie boxes i spend more time on then my whole fruit tree forrest lol

Personally, I like will Jujube. It has a deep rich taste. In Cambodia, it is commonly found growing on edge rice paddy field. Growing lush foliage in raining season and fruits is ripen and ready to harvest as the rice crops is harvested. It grow wild uncared for.

Yep they do & also they make a nice tasting wine too. In Barbados we call them Dunks but the variety here is mostly the small wild ones

I’m growing a Li in northern CA but not much fruit. Maybe I will try buying another variety for cross pollination although I’ve read that Li is self fruitful.

Li will produce better with a pollinator. Lang and some others will work. I have a Li and a Lang and some volunteers that are neither because the LI and Lang are grafted. All mine are heavy producers, make sure not to plant far from each other so they get pollinated well. If your Li puts out suckers near the trunk n you let it grow, you can use that as a pollinator without buying another tree. Reason being is that they are usually grafted to a different type of jujube which are the more sour type.

@@lemontea128 I have LI and a Lang and also let some suckers grow out some what controlled. If one is not diligent in the pruning the suckers, they will take over. The suckers produce a tiny Jujube that I like to use the boiled juice with water for tea or a cold drink

the suckers are a pain in the ass, they send out volunteers like crazy well beyond the drip line it's a fairly invasive root system and then you go to pull out the volunteers and the thorns will get you. Very spikey tree, wear gloves and handle with care!
