I like the Shanxi Li when it's even greener. Not as sweet but has a nice balance of sugar and acidity. They are also good when more brown and sweeter. So far they do not taste great when they are wrinkled but the tree is young. I think that's similar to Li when it's dry and is not meant for dry consumption.

Have two jujube trees already. They seem kind of slow to grow, but the produce a few fruit right away. I might add a couple more. Almost no pests (if the skin splits sugar ants will find them), but no diseases that I've seen yet.

I’d go at least 4 feet apart, and at least 2 feet from sidewalk. Though fruit trees don’t typically damage concrete.

my li jujube is doing great even though the birds got the last dozen all in one day. my persimmon didn't survive the summer. want to try again, but want it to thrive. planted one of your fuyu/jiro's here in phoenix zone 9b. it got full afternoon shade, plenty of mulch and flooded it once a week, and twice a week during hottest part of summer. not even the rootstock survived which is a first. thanks for the help

Fruit trees do not like to be overwatered. Even in the hottest months, water more than once a week can eventually kill your tree. You want to have a thick layer of mulch, and water about every 10 to 14 days.

@@DaveWilsonTrees newly planted trees of any kind will burn up in phoenix summer if they're only watered every 2 weeks even with tons of wood chips. my plum, jujube, peach, pomegranate, (all dave wilson) are all thriving under the same exact conditions. i pull back on watering depending on what it as it gets older of course. i even think my kumquat is from you guys too all doing amazing. i have over 40 trees on my property total that i started planting back in 2009, and love persimmons, so i'll just try again and pull back the watering on that one. i've been told they're hard to get started here because of the heat/intense sun in the summer.

@@SonOfAGun1814 yes, newly planted trees need more frequent watering. But will never establish if over watered, which you risk doing by watering weekly. Get a moisture meter, and don’t water if the ground is still damp from your previous irrigation. The key to growing fruit trees in extreme heat is to have at least 8 inches of mulch over the root zone. Fruit scions can handle the heat, but the root system can not. Newly planted trees should also be whitewashed from the ground up to where the tree shades itself.

@@DaveWilsonTrees Whitewashing has made a big improvement for my avocado, citrus and a badly sunburned cherry tree. I use Interior White Latex paint mixed 50/50 with water. Do not use Exterior paint, only Interior. I bought a gallon of Gliddon for $12. A gallon is way more than I will ever use since I only mix a half a soda can at a time and that paints quite a few small trees. Then I repaint as the tree grows and the whitewash gets thin.

Im growing Li, Lang, Shanxi Li, sugar cane in the antelope valley, CA. Jujubes are the truit tree "for dummies". I mean it in a good way because anyone can grow a jujube. Minimal care, with minimal water usage. It can take the heat as well as freezing temperatures. I will be adding more varieties to my collection in 2021.

I agree about minimal water usage. I have not watered mine in years and they never look stressed. The leaves are always so shiny and green. Very drought tolerant.

Agree...it is also deer resistant...like pomegranate, pineapple guava and citrus trees.

They like most fruit trees are not particularly invasive and highly unlikely to effect the foundation 4-5 feet should be enough. Some extra space might be good so you can work around it without battling the thorns.

I have a Jujube tree that did not grew the first 3 years. Not one cm!!! But 2020 is grew over 1m in every direction!!! (I live in the german Alps) So plenty of rain. Is this Normal for certain veraities? I have many Jujubetrees, but the Li was the only one that did that.

We have all of those except Tigerwood. I’d say all jujubes are equally crunchy. Some may be juicer.

I’ve heard the roots will damage foundation and water pipes. The furthest I can plant it is 10-15 feet away from my house due to small yard. Will there be any issues I should worry about?

I’ve never heard of jujube roots being invasive. Other fruit trees will not damage foundations.

And heard of people saying they’ve been told the roots will go looking for water so not to plant near water pipes. Was just worried about those things. But thank you for your answer.

The only drawback I have with mine (Li & Lang, recently planted Honey Jar ) is the roots sucker like crazy. And of course the root stock is not like the grafted scion, the leaves are much smaller. I have never let the suckers develop and produce fruit so I do not know if the root stock has a tasty fruit or not.

Root suckers from just below the graft, or coming up out of the ground? We graft on to Ziziphus seedling, not known for suckering.

Clay soil that fissures can cause roots to sucker in many types of plants. A good layer of mulch can help remedy the problem.

I have a Sherwood and a Li. Both were planted next to each other in 2016. The Li arrived in a fruiting state and made a couple fruits in the 1st season. Since that time, I've had ZERO fruit formation. They both bloom at the exact same time (right now). But nothing. Sherwood has never made a single fruit. What up with that???

Li is self fruitful and best recommended pollinator for other varieties. Take a close look at your cultural practices. You need to be feeding low nitrogen to promote strong flowers. Irrigate thoroughly but infrequently, always allowing the topsoil to dry between watering.Tell us what you think might be issues and maybe we an help solve the problem. Trees are still teenagers planted in 2016 so let’s hope fruit set is better this summer as they become more mature.

Is it sour? Jujubes are grafted onto wild jujube rootstocks which produces really small sour fruit. Check your tree and see if you have any growth coming from the rootstocks.

Yes, we get triple digit summer days here at the nursery and they do fine. A good layer of mulch will help withstand even more heat. A good watering before predicted heat spikes helps also.

Cut as much as you like. They have fruits at new grow bushes. It not easy to die. I like to cut of small bushes and the spines. So easy to pick fruits next year.

The flavor is not like an apple, but the texture is (less juicy though), so your brain kinda tricks you into thinking that it also tastes like an apple.
