I think these look really good. But I like to use real coal instead. I get it from the trackside of my local heritage railroad and find large lumps. Then I either put it on some cardboard or a permanent load with some Woodland scenic tack, I just brush on a nice layer, get crushed up coal and pour it on the tack. Then I tip it over to let the extra fall out. I then rinse and repeate that 5 times and the coal looks great!

As others have suggested I glue a metal washer in the Styrofoam before adding the load. This allows for easy removal of the load with a magnet to run the car empty back to the mine.
