We got two containers of Woodland Scenics ballast for Christmas. One medium gray blend and the other coarse cinders. We decided to use it to make coal loads and ballast loads for 14 open wagons. Join us and see how we did it!

This video is such a great help with Ballast and Coal loads! I didn't expect you to have Gordon pull them either since he claims he doesn't like pulling dirty cars, but I think he secretly does. Plus, he does look splendid pulling them. Anyway, I'll have to try this myself, especially since I just do temperary layouts on my bedroom floor as I don't yet have a spot for a train table.

[could you move something around so you could make some space for a train layout so you could enjoy the hobby better]

@@GarlandKent-y6k not really. Just gotta patiently wait for the day I can have my own permanent home and then build the layout of my dreams.

Great video, but PLEASE turn the music down, or better yet, turn it off.

Hey missedapproach57, thank you for watching the video and enjoying it despite the music! We received a couple music related comments on that video. We're a work in progress and strive to do better with every video (with mixed results!). Thanks again for watching and for taking the time to comment!

I don't know why you KZbinrs play background music and then try to talk over it. Quite annoying.

Seems like a waste of ballast

I can definitely see why you would think that. But, surprisingly, the mixture didn't really use that much ballast (I assume it's the mixture used as filler you're referring to and not the visible ballast top). The project was intended to show one quick and easy way to make a fairly convincing ballast load with items a person might already have lying around. You could certainly exchange the ballast mixture 'filler' with some other common household material, like a kitty litter or even a different material like a plaster of paris. Maybe we'll try making a ballast load using plaster of paris as a filler topped with ballast and see how that works. Thanks for watching!
