I built a sifter on a diagonal frame (sifter is basically like yours with 1/4" hardware cloth). I can shovel the compost onto the top end of the sifter and it mostly sifts itself as it slides to the bottom of the frame. The wheel barrow sits under the frame to catch the sifted compost. Can run about 3/4 of a large wheel barrow load in the 2:30 seconds it took to do 5 gallons.

I don't care how long your videos are and some complain about it, but there is always so much to learn from your vids. I get so many ideas and come up with my own based off what I see in your videos even if I have to watch sometimes in increments. This is your garden journal! How can you expect him to always make them short. Not realistic short videos for good range of quality info on experience. Thanks for always sharing.👍👍👍🙌

I've had this idea, and it's probably been done before, but it's both the sifter and compost tumbler turned into one thing. It would be cool if the sides of say John's compost tumblers had screens on the sides that could be covered with removable panels when used for composting, or removed when wanting to sift. Place the wheel barrow under the tumbler, and you've eliminated a whole bunch of labor/time with less space/effort.

The mesh of the finer screens could be made into permanent drums, slightly smaller to fit inside the sifter. With one of them slightly smaller again so both can be stored inside (nested) when not in use. No need to fiddle with the ties each time.

I'm a diy guy too. This is a good idea and cheap compared to most other similar sifters. The materials are cheap to buy if you want to make one yourself. But once you factor in the time to go out and buy all the stuff, measure, cut everything and assemble, buying seems like a pretty good option. It's all about what your time is worth. I would recommend gluing the base together.

Please be advised sifter needs to slide on from front of wheelbarrow! The wheelbarrow cannot be against wall. Can be seen on how to make rolling sifter! My eBay site will give reviews on how well it works!!! I was very excited when John was interested in my sifter and thought it was amazing so I mailed out to quickly. High cost for sifter getting there quickly!Sorry about no instruction. But knowing john watched both videos i would think he didn't need them. Earthkeeping Hi Cheryl I was excited to see John reviewing the product because it looked like less work than the one I made. With that being said if you are a business owner and creator of a product it is on you to make sure you include instuctions on how to use the product properly in order for people to get the proper experience with the product. Like with what happened here you may not like what the reviewer said but don't take it personally just use it as a learning experience and imrpove the product and or other aspects that are lacking, for example high cost of shipping.

I did not send instruction. My mistake and i have learned the hard way. John had seen it used properly on one of my videos posted: garden rolling sifter but does not show how to put on wheelbarrow. I am very grateful john thought enough of sifter to review. And encourage people to buy one or make themselves. Also on my how to build one yourself which my father and John encouraged me to do shows how to put on wheelbarrow correctly. Which john seen before posting his. Yes i am a little disappointed cant say i am not. But all is well!! Composting is the heartbeat of organic gardening!

Earthkeeping you should post a link to your video of you using the sifter. I watched the video by clicking on your profile, I also watched the one of how to build your own which I think is great. Some people may not be inclined to go to all that trouble of searching for themselves but if there's a link and the work is done for them they may watch it when they other wise would not have. It would not hurt to give it a shot.

Cheryl I like your sifter and I think John was unnecessarily harsh and rudely dismissive. From what I see it stays in one place (unlike others), rolls very easily, does exactly what it is supposed to do, and includes the options for the varied screen sizes. I like it is a single unit that can be changed because it saves storage space. For most people, that is a good thing and worth the few minutes it took to modify the unit. I like that it sits on the catch container and does not need to roll on the ground. I think you made an awesome product! I don't think the price is that high when one considers the costs of all the materials plus the labor of making it, and some fair amount of profit for you. John unfairly compared to his home made screen sifter because he did not include his own labor cost. His would still be less expensive, but not really by so much. As to his functionality complaints: meh. 1. The shake screen may be his preference, but it is definitely more work to use and it takes longer as he admits in the video. That shaking motion is also very hard on the back, for those of us with back issues, which he does not address. 2. His desire to manipulate the compost is just his choice, not an actual problem. In my experience, rubbing the pieces on the screen actually damages the screen...why do that if you don't have to? 3. His point about tumbling out the big pieces with the end open was also a personal preference, not a functional issue. The big pieces remaining in allows them to help the process by knocking against each other and the screen to actually get more fines out. This was demonstrated when he opened the lid...nothing small was left inside! He made more work for himself by doing that: it added a step and another container to move around that was shown to be totally unnecessary. I think he did have a valid point about the length of the pipes: I suggest you should offer maybe three sizes. Base the sizes on the most common garden carts and wheelbarrows. Go around all the shops that sell them and measure that outside length. I don't think your slide on method would have mattered had John done it because his wheelbarrow is definitely not the width you designed for. His point on shipping costs was valid...take his advice on getting that down. You have a good product and, in my opinion, John was mostly rude and unfair.

Hello John, I am a big fan of your videos for years, the first time I stumbled with them was the aquaponicone, you cannot imagine how thrilled and happy I was, as I have tendency to go back to nature just like yourself. for the sifter, I honestly don't think it will do the job as there is no space between the 1/2 inch and the 1/4 inch screens, If I only want to separate cast only, I would have used only 1/4 or 1/8 inch screen! I'd rather space the 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 (with smaller diameters for te 1/2 < 1/4 < 1/8 inches) to give a chance to separate: !- worms and twigs 2- cucoons 3- cast, respectively. But thanks alot for you anyway :)

Didn't fit my wheelbarrow crossways either, but put my thinking cap on and re arranged the tubes to run lengthwise and on an angle and sit inside the barrow. That way bigger pieces fall out the shallow end into a tub. Works like a champ.

I purchased one of these on ebay a couple months ago. I had no problems at all with it when I watched her instructional youtube video. And as for shipping, I was given a very reasonable shipping price, and was not forced to pay for priority mail, and still received it very quickly. I think this review seems to be bashing it a little just to seem like he is authentic and "on the consumer's side", but its a little overboard for no reason from what I experienced with my purchase of this item.

Hi john, I watch your KZbin.com garden videos sometimes often and sometimes from time to time, and they are not only a big help for me a novice gardener but also a interesting because of the different types of plants and garden topics you review. Today, I saw the compost sifter and your t-shirt I like the slogan on your t-shirt, but I need to know how much it costs. As for the sifter, I think it would be more convenient to use if it had a turning handle on the outside and if it snapped in so I could turn it without having to hold it in place. Thank you.

okay John I LOVE all your video's but I checked the link below and can't find the shirt's, I really want a couple, tell me where to go to get them, also I love the rolling compost sifter, but way too expensive for me, I think I will use your method. I did get 2 of the micro shredder's, and the lifetime compost 80 gallon, which I am waiting for, should be here July 3rd, will be my first composting, other than the piled up grass and leaves which are way too hard for me to toss. Keep the video's coming, I don't mind you being long winded. You are the best. BTW I had a fish pond with coi's in it, but took it down, and used it for a raised bed, but my question is can I use the coi food for compost????

I don't think it's necessary to be able to get you're hands in there and push and force stuff through. I think it would save time in the long run if you just run the sifter for a while and dump it out because it'll all make it's way into the com post anyway so there's no reason to stress about the big clumps now. They will break up in time. Great video. I loved the demo.

Why not just use a push compost spreader? Works just like this but has handles. You push and it distributes screened sifted compost on the ground were you would have placed and spread it in the end anyways.

The 1/8 inch mesh is flimsy, but if you take a 1/4 or 1/2 inch and fold it over itself it halves the size of the mesh and stiffens up the sifter. Thats the way I would do it for my worm castings. Two % gal buckets w/lids cut down and chicken wire minus the two years thinking about it and minus the $60 shipping!

I put 2 legs on my sifter, they fold, and it can sit like a painter easle, or it xan be flat, and when you shake it, you wont have to hold it up, just hold your end and shake, and the legs hold up the other end of the frame(for folks who arent upper body strong) Makes a yuge difference. I have a frame like yours too, and I dont mind bending and shaking my moneymaker, the neighbours need something to stare at, and talk about. 😂
