Dumb question, but what if it's not connected to ground - is feedback the main concern?
@autodidacticprofessor86911 ай бұрын
@@telemachia Feedback is just from the parts in the pickup vibrating and that vibration becoming an oscillation. The pickup cover being connected to ground, from any scientific standpoint, is pointless. They soldered the covers on in the 50's and 60's because it was the best way to do it. I'm sure your method is fine. A lot of people falsely assume "old ways are better" because Paul Kossoff's burst sounded really badass. Did the pickup rearrangement and poped the bridge back, replacing the trem springs. The guitar came up almost exactly in tune; just a minor fine tuner tweak was needed on two strings.

@autodidacticprofessor86911 ай бұрын
BS. The silicone actually does a better job acoustically isolating the cover than solder would do. Oldhead guitar guys think solder does something magical to the "eddie currents" that may or may not happen inside a pickup cover. For one thing, if it's a real vintage built cover, it won't have any copper to cause those currents. There is no scientific basis to have to "ground" your pickup covers and using silicone SEALANT unless you use too little would actually be IDEAL for protecting your pickup from squeal. You should go back after you do the job with silicone and crank it up to 10, tell them they are clowns and walk out of the store. lol

Waxpot them. Get tons of candles, but break or crumble them and put em in a bowl or empty glass jar inside a pot of water and boil it. It'll melt the candles into wax until it's clear and then dip your pickups in em and let them in until the air is out completely/replaced with wax. Take em out, let it dry for a bit and wipe off excess. Did it a number of times, works like a charm.

That has nothing do with why pickup could be microphonic. There's no grounding issue that causes that. It is either a pickup that not wax potted or poorly made and the bobbin wire is literally vibrating and that vibration making the pickup an acoustic transducer and not a strictly electronic one as it is supposed to be. The cover itself vibrating can cause feedback but not a microphonic problem. There is no scientific reason to solder a pickup cover on.

You should put some inside to acoustically isolate the cover from the pickup so it doesn't cause feedback. Gibson pots most of their covered pickups, even the ones that aren't potted in their coils, gets wax in the cover at least to keep it from squealing. DiMarzio does this too. But a bead of silicone on the slug coil before you place the cover on, is actually a great idea.

@RByrne2 жыл бұрын
I've heard this too, but I've also heard that silicone is best, all from different luthiers and techs. I guess it's just preference, and both work well. Personally I'd prefer silicone as it isn't permanent. One thing they all say is to put silicone or some tap on top of the pickup before putting on the cover.
@realtruenorth2 жыл бұрын
You don't need solder
@autodidacticprofessor86911 ай бұрын
Lots of oldhead guitar guys have weird ideas about solder. It doesn't prevent squeal, otherwise, Gibson would not literally fill their covers full of wax to prevent it. BUT putting a generous layer between the pickup and the cover of silicone sealer would be a good happy medium between solder and no wax or having a horrific wax mess in your pickup cover, if you want to ever remove them. MAYBE the silicone's limits are very high Marshall stack volumes but very few people are playing at those volumes anymore.

@squierjoshyt2 жыл бұрын
Usually only one row has adjustable screws, so those are exposed. So no difference.
@autodidacticprofessor86911 ай бұрын
Kind of. Most of the time, your screws are flush with the bobbin when the coil is exposed but when you install covers you have to turn the screws out of the bobbin a little to peek above the cover and in that case, your screw coil will sound slightly louder than the slug coil. If you adjust the radius of the screws, by turning them out even more in the middle strings so the space between the strings and screws are the same, the effect is even more pronounced.
