I have been trimming white melamine edge banding with a razor blade for the past week and it's awful. I tried your technique today and honestly it's one of the best video's I've seen on KZbin! Seriously, I may actually do more with edge banding just because of your video. Can't thank you enough! All the other videos on removing the trim don't work at all, yours does!

I remember my grand father doing edge banding without any machines 20 yrs ago. After looking everywhere in youtube, finally found this as a refresher. Thanks for this, brought back pleasant memories.

Coming back to say thank you. Your method is so much better than everything else I've tried from KZbin. Faster and better result without any specialty tools!

This is the method i was taught when i started working in a cabinet shop. Only difference is we would rap painters tape at the end of the file so the file would not leave marks and it held it up just enough. I think this is the best method i hate the slitters and ive seen them dig the plywood or rip the the edge banding.

Excellent! Very efficient way to trim & smooth out the corner in one step! Saved me from buying more tools to execute this.

A file described as ‘for metal’ is made to be hard enough to cut metal but equally it will cut softer materials. Just choose a fine file. A coarse one will not produce as smooth a finish to the edge of the banding when you smooth it off after trimming. And if you want a 45 degree edge to the banding which some people recommend to prevent the edge snagging and lifting, just tilt the file at approximately 45 degrees after the initial smoothing shown in the video, and make another couple of passes. But don’t overdo it or you’ll cut into the body of the workpiece. You can also put a matching chamfer on the trimmed ends if you wish - good to prevent snagging.

Very interesting take on edge band trimming. I have a collection of trimmers, trim router jigs and am always looking for new ways to get a clean perfect edge. I am edge banding with oak (FastCap) which is 3x the standard thickness of iron-on tape and the grain is notorious for tear out. Definitely not a production method but if this solves the problem of tear out then it is well worth the extra time involved...thanks for sharing!

Is the file you used a specific type? I've looked online for one and they all say they're for use in metal. Can you give me any more info on what type of file to use?
