This "unfolding" is called the omnibus progression. In classical music two voices move chromatically in contrary motion usually the bass and top voice. In Gospel, same thang contrary motion but one voice is chromatic and the other diatonic 😎

It's coming from the F minor jazz melodic minor scale ,left hand plays the 1st tetrachord descending,right hand plays 2nd tetrachord ascending

Lol that’s a good way to think of it. Another way to think is your alternating diminished chords starting with the C (5 notes above the target chord). Hope that helps
