As a professional forester, this is a good guide for farmers. The one thing I will say is that only some common stihl chains are sharpened with the file held flat. Husqvarna or Oregon chains often need the file held with a 10 degree back lean. Always check the box of the chain for file angles, THEY ARENT ALL THE SAME!

Seeing your videos for a long time and they are educational and fun. Beeing a retired Swedish farmer I started some chain-saw work nowdays for fun end upkeeping of the farm and "park" I brushed up my forestry-shool education from the early 70`s. In Sweden this was a mandatory course when attending farming education. As a beginner again I felt more strongly about protection, helmet, visir and of course the special trousers wich will keep you alive if you get into serious trouble, like back-fighting saw or when you trip or loose balance. I think you where wearing als thie gear when working with the saw but please mention this in a (maybe) coming chain-saw video. Watching american you-tuber-farmers working with chain-saws in jeans, shorts and practicaly no protection always make me nervous............

Great video Adrian. My father worked on the forestry for years and he taught me how to sharpen a saw and it was the simple file that works best. If they were a mile away from the road they just carried a 13 ml spanner and a file. Simple but effective. Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas to yourself and the family.

I use the file guide myself but now like yourself I have got better at just using the file on it's own, all great tips, I used to be running to get chains sharpened for years. One tip I would have if you are out in the field cutting is to bring a spare sharp chain with you, it's handy if you really blunt the chain on something, also sometimes as time goes on in addition to flipping the bar over clean out the slot the chain runs in, you can buy a little tool for it. and also run a flat file on the bar itself to keep it flat and true. A very helpful video for lots of people, it will save time and money to learn to sharpen yourself.

Great video adrian. My father uses his trusty 1998 stihl 08s, absolutely cracking saw, from new, very little trouble and always used a file guide to sharpen it, or god the local mechanic "Cecil" to sharpen it. Blade on it was on donkeys a years, hit nails, stones and a steel beam. I saw (haha) it go though some serious heavy stuff over the years. Cracking saw, always serviced and cleaned up.

Greeting from the USA and Northern New Hampshire where we have some of the largest trees on earth. In rural Northern New Hampshire we all own more than one chainsaw. We never let anyone sharpen our own saws! You've done well here. In time, with experience you will find you dont need file guides, and NEVER use a Dremil/rotary tool to file a saw. Thats amateur hour. Bottom line is. A sharp saw chain is the safest. Take your time sharpening. When the saw starts to dull and you get tired put it down and take a break because thats when accidents happen. One other thing. Fill your gas reservoir to the top. When that runs out its time to sit down and take a break. The same is true of the bar and chain oil reservoir. There is a reason those tanks only carry a certain amount of gas or oil. Yes, it is to make the saw lighter but it also a reminder to take a break when you re-fill. Great video. Love it.

Great video Adrian. I’ve been using the file and guide for years - great job. Only problem is it’s difficult to sharpen in the field (literally in a field) and it’s a pain going back to the workshop to use the vice. Recently I bought a “Oregon 12 Volt Sure Sharp Electric Sharpener” which is like a Dremel with an angle guide. Fab little tool - can clip onto tractor battery or the quad battery - or even the cigarette lighter in the jeep. Have a look - but no pressure if you’re happy with your file. Love the channel. Aidan

Another great video Adrian, im sharpening saws since I was 14, all free hand no guide, not blowing my own trumpets but its how I was shown. I started watching that mad Canadian buckin Billy Ray and I saw him use a square ground file , naturally I had to try, honestly I destroyed more chains , but lately its good, there is a serious difference in the edge but oh my god time consuming. Great video, The only thing different for me to sharpen is to run the file 10 times per tooth, Not sure if I have a bad file or the blade is always super blunt. But I find 10 is the sweet spot, leaves the blade sharp and doesn’t remove that much certainly much less than the first grinder you show,

Thanks for putting together such an informative video. When I am sharpening the teeth with the file guide, I have always wondered if I should put some of the pressure back against the blade instead of straight down. The instructions that came with the saw did not say this or any videoes I have watched but it seems to make sense based on the way the blade sits. Maybe it makes no difference. What are your thoughts. Thanks

“Blade” ???? Must be why it’s called a ‘bladesaw’…….. 😉 round file by far the best way - forget the gimmicks, many of which I’ve fallen for down the years too 🙄 one tip I would add is a small bottle of Tipp-ex and dab the top of the tooth you started on, when it comes round again you’ll know it’s done.
