Easy wood burning foundry - melting aluminum or lead.
Easy Aluminum wood burning "foundry" furnace for melting and casting aluminum or lead for projects, bullets, fishing weights, etc. Uses wood or charcoal for fuel add a fan or hookup a blower to create more heat.

I tried doing it without fan just wood and I had a piece of cardboard to wave it and get it hotter (kinda worked) It melted but it needed more heat

Yep... the next time I piled on the wood and got a good bed of coals first. Then crucible and more wood. Not real efficient but "gits r done" ;)

Could you dig like a ramp underneath that rim to let airflow in or wouldn't that help

Laying a fire brick doughnut will create a pressure zone putting a pipe under the pit and using a blower or lol hand billow the cans will melt faster

If you have an old hair dryer or air pump for a blow up matress you can attach a metal pipe to the end and force air in under the rim. This will get more air into the fire making for a hotter and faster burning fire. You might also try a smaller rim. The less space on the outside of the crucible makes for better heat exchange.

can you make a large crusible from a 20lb tank i melt alot of aluminum and was woundering if a large crusible made from a 20 lb tank would work or not iv made sevral of these small ones but would like to melt more at a time if possible

I suppose it would work but would take a lot of heat to melt something that large. I would think it will still only last 3 or 4 melts then the steel gets weak. The small ones only last a few times before they are unsafe to handle with AL in them.

I built a foundry and it melted the metal propane tank that I had cut in half I need a thick steel one or buy a real graphite crucible.

Thats probably because it wasn't a steel tank. It happens to everyone. Check it with a magnet first. If the magnet sticks it steel, it it doesn't stick its not.
