LAHAKAI SAILING // ⛵️ S2 EP63 // This week we are rebuilding our tiller in our sailboat restoration project with Sergio, our master carpenter. We learn all the secrets to make carpentry easy as he laminates, sands and makes our tiller from one we saw online.

We hope you liked the video! It was great to work on something that wasn't the interior this week and give ourselves a little variety. We're thinking of carving Sergios name into the tiller to commemorate how great his work is. This way, we'll always remember how much time and care he's put into building our boat, no matter where we travel in the world. Let us know what you think about the results! And if you know of where we can find the hardware for this, send us a link in the comments! Cheers

I couldn’t decide if Sergio was crafting or sculpting - what an incredible craftsman who not only works with his hands but his wonderful mind. It was even great to see the way he made dowels - what a man.

Excellent episode. You focused in on the DETAILS of how a piece is made. More meat, less hamburger helper, good job.

There's a stainless fabricator next to when Ben and MP are finishing their boat. They created several things for them from scratch.

You are so right about the joy of creating unique pieces. I think if you custom make the fittings you can likely add more artistic flare to the project as well. Cheers.

Thanks for the inspiration and the technique with wedges - both you and Sergio. I also have to make a new tiller/extension for my own 50 yrs old fiberglass day sailor since my current one has just disintegrated (the glue hasn't hold up to the hard weather conditions here in Norway and the laminates has split). Since teak is illegal here I'm gonna cut some ash trees on my property (ash is what we use for axe handles is the 100% superior wood for lateral forces), but will layer it with re-sawn pieces from some old deck chairs made of teak I've saved behind the barn. I will fit the tiller to the original stainless bracket on the tiller stock, but yes, I would appreciate if you found a manufacturer for the extension bracket and told us here in a follow up video.

1 thing you all might want to do is check some of the KZbin machinists and talk with them about making the part you need for that tiller. Kinda like a showing both channels type thing.

Sergio is an woodworking artist, absolutely beautiful! Possibly you could find a manufacturer or a salvage company who carried the piece, it's a commodity item so very pricey. Have you a foundry close by, they could pour it in bronze?

He really is something isn't he! And good idea! We do know a place here that makes bronze pipes and custom things of that nature. We'll drop them a line. We've also been asking around to see if any second hand ones are out there. Cheers!

Tillers are wonderful. Wheels are when you have to (boat is too big). Tillers are easier to fit auto pilots to, either powered or vane type. Tillers react faster, allow better feel, etc. That one looks very nice. Rudder head fitting? I have seen them called tiller head fitting or just tiller fitting.... locally? Ask MP. You didn't show us what you were replacing, what you still have or even the top of the rudder shaft. Assuming you just have the top of a rudder shaft, a rectangular block of steel, stainless, bronze or even nylon, with a hole to fit the rudder shaft... a slot towards the front where it will be hidden and a bolt hole to tighten the block to the shaft. Another hole at the back end for the tiller pivot to fit through and some SS formed in an upside down U to fit over the block and your tiller. Two holes to hold the tiller and one for the pivot. They are not rocket science ;) Some people put a screw through the top to act as a stopper to keep the tiller from going lower than a set point but I guess it would be possible to put a screw up through the block so it was hidden. Tiller extension? I have yet to use the one that came with the boat because I replaced the tiller handle and did not put the fitting back in and we use the auto pilot pretty much all the time. I should finish the job and install that though so I can see what it is like to use it.

Everything seams to be turning out beautifully. What I want to know, where are the factory people that worked early on. Did their business take a turn? What's up? How do you get to use their equipment and supplies to build your boat? Enquiring minds want to know.

Looks like you will have to fashion your own tiller fittings. Edson, and the rest seem to be out of your price range. Best wishes.

The worse part will be the importation taxes into Brazil. So if the price starts high, it will be even higher when it arrives. So you are probably right! Cheers!

@@lahakaiYes, the largest fittings are ~$1,400.00 USD, I'm in Canada, so no import taxes, but ~30% exchange, plus 5% GST, on top. Ouch, my wallet just bit me!

I don’t think you can/will find anything to even closely match “your” tiller creation - in Italy there are shops who make custom fittings, but you probably can find shops also in your “neck of the woods” who can do it too, just look for a shop with the capability of CNC machining.

"HS Sprenger Ruderpinnenbeschlag" is what you are looking for. Or "Tiller connection". "HS Sprenger" is the brand. I changed mine a few month ago. If you need help to get one let me know.

Thanks for the tip! We checked out the site and they have the tiller connection for the extension arm, but I didn’t see the fitting for the tiller itself. Did you have luck buying the tiller head fitting too or just the extension connection? No prices on the site, scary haha

Senhor Sergio did a great job. I love watching pros at work. BTW, I've never seen a dowel inserted using a drill before. I might have to try this.
@lahakai
@lahakai 6 ай бұрын
We will send him your kind words! We never saw this technique either. With light sanding for adjustments the drill made the dowel go in so easy and fast. Really impressive!
@steveraleigh100

@@lahakai thank you. I was wondering if he coated it with something to reduce friction and potential squeaking?
@lahakai
@lahakai 6 ай бұрын
Coated the dowels or the handle itself? If you mean the dowels, we haven't glued the end or the dowels in yet (we are waiting to find our fittings) but we will use the same epoxy glue compound to attach it all. Once that dries, they will all be inseparable - we've done some tests with this epoxy and it really binds.
@steveraleigh100
@steveraleigh100 6 ай бұрын
@@lahakai I was thinking of when the dowel is twisted into the hole, there would be friction, if he coated it with something to reduce it. But if it's going to be glued, that should stop the friction and friction squeaking - I hate that noise. It's like putting soap on screws to reduce friction.
@lahakai
@lahakai 6 ай бұрын
Ah gotcha. Alright, to me this was the craziest part - he tested it out (note: no glue) by drilling it into the test piece of plywood to measure the dowel to size. (He had drilled a hole in the plywood with the same size bit as the hardwood). It made a tiny squeak for a second but then seemed to smooth the dowel out (and I have no idea if this was purposeful, but the dowel then had a sheen surface afterwards). Then when he drilled it into the hardwood handle, it took two seconds, no sounds, and seemingly no resistance too. I had no idea that was a thing so I remain impressed haha.

I want to do this with some beams in my boat. What type of glue did you use for the lamination?
@lahakai

We used an epoxy glue. The brand we used was Brasfort though we were recommended Araldite in the beginning. However we found that Brasfort was half the price - so shop around! No complains either, it was easy to work with and dried super strong.

That was really nice work. In the back of the paint booth it looked like there was a water fall. What was that for? Do you have any pictures of the tiller fitting that you were talking about at the end?

The waterfall in the paint booth is to keep the dust down.
@lahakai
@lahakai 6 ай бұрын
Exactly! The waterfall significantly reduces dust, improving the finish of the painted products. It's good for high production places with a lot of overspray. For the fittings, check out the blog we wrote about it. If you scroll all the way to the end you'll find pictures of the fittings. www.lahakai.com/post/easy-woodworking-project-our-diy-tiller Cheers!
