The "gameover" topic is interesting to me. Today, if a game has a proper gameover (i.e. that playthrough is history) we generally call it a rogue-like or rogue-lite (although these games are also always procedurally generated, which takes away some of the monotony of retracing your steps), whereas that was the just how it was in the arcade and early home-console era. I agree with the panel that gameovers are generally antiquated in AAA games, but it's also nice that there is this corner of the indie market where high stakes, perma-death, and starting back at the beginning exists for those who want it.

CLARIFICATION: In Final Fantasy XV, when wearing the jacket, Noctis will sometimes complain about the heat, to which Gladiolus responds "Then lose the jacket". If you equip the outfit without the jacket, Noctis will never complain about the heat. Also, I may remember incorrectly but I'm pretty sure if Noctis isn't wearing the jacket at night and complains about the cold then Ignis will tell him to wear his jacket.

Fun fact for the panel: the Stellaview also had a sequel for Chrono Trigger called Radical Dreamers: The Unstealable Jewel. It's a visual novel with music composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and starring Serge and Kid. Many of its elements were later reused for Chrono Cross. The game was going to be available as a easter egg in the PS1 port of Trigger, but Director Masato Kato was unhappy with the game and gave it up. Unlike the other Stellaview games this one could be downloaded during the broadcast time and played later, so cartridges with the full game playable on a SFC still exist, as do complete ROMs and even a fan translation to english.

The whole "growing up" thing bugs me. It reminds me of this great C.S. Lewis quote, "When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

To the guy asking if he has a responsibility as a consumer to buy new games: The definite answer is "No". Zero guilt. Just do what you want. If you want to buy new games later in life when you maybe have more available funds then the publishers & devs will benefit at that time. Used games support the wide games industry & also serve as marketing for future games. Buy however you want. The only guilt valid would be via piracy.
@Closetgamin7 жыл бұрын
My sentiments exactly. Like Jones said, it's on the developers/publishers to convince buyers to pay full price. If you don't buy day one, that's their issue, not yours.

It always bothers me when people talk about Bioware's games, that nobody ever mentions the Baldur's Gate series. Those were both critically acclaimed, and sold quite well. They're still among my favourite games and hold up quite well (though it is best to play with the Gibberlings mods, or get the enhanced editions which does the same things for the most part).

I'm surprised they talked about the "ease to get 1-ups" and difficulty, but they didn't say anything about 3D Marios only bringing you back to the main menu DESPITE autosaving after you get anything done. You are literally told to walk a couple of steps if you run out of lives. No enemies. No obstacles. Just walk back to the level. You lose a life: Go back to the beginning of the level. You lose all lives: Go to the main menu and walk to the beginning of the level in 3 seconds.

To the point about only buying used games, I think a very good point was missed when nobody mentioned the rise of DLC and how that can affect sales of new games. I know I used to be a day one video game buyer. But with the rise of dlc, there is absolutely no reason to buy a game brand new at launch anymore. Waiting a while for a game (or even waiting for a Goty or "complete" collection), I can get an ever cheaper version of the game that contains more content.

Used games are clearly what brings most profits for large gaming retail chains like gamestop. They are buying the game back from the player for cheap and then reaping a much larger profit rate from reselling that game again. None of the profits from those resold games go to the publishers or to the developers of those games.
@BigBarkleyValley7 жыл бұрын
Hell yeah Kyle! Beast Wars was my show! I was so disappointed in the fighting game. I need to rewatch that masterpiece. My idea for a cartoon video game would be Animaniacs. It would be a 3d platformer like Banjo Kazooie (My 2nd favorite game of all time). The Warner Bros lot would be the hub world. The sub worlds would incorporate other characters like Pinky & The Brain, Slappy the Squirrel, The Goodfeathers, Rita and Runt and the list goes on. It would obviously have the original voice cast for all of them. I also thought of a Freakazoid game but it would be impossible adapt his powers to a video game.

For the person who asked the first question, I don't think you got a good answer/discussion. If you're actually concerned about rewarding the efforts of a game creator for a particular game, then don't buy it used. A used game is basically an opportunity for the retailer to make more profit from the same copy. Buy new discounted physical or digital games. As for feeling guilty about buying new discounted games, then you shouldn't feel guilty. You're still rewarding the hard work of the game creator and you're still voting with your wallet, just relative to yourself with other games.
@quagthias7 жыл бұрын
Maybe they know more about the retailer business model than me but I'm not sure I buy the panel's argument about buying new games not supporting the publisher because the retailer already paid for the games up front. Like, if a retailer orders 20 games from the publisher, you buying the game from the retailer means the retailer is likely to order more games from the publisher to replace the stock. Right? I make good money but I still often wait for sales because I know even if I buy a game at $60 right away there's a good chance I won't even have the chance to play it for weeks or months, at which point it'd be $40 or something. I feel no guilt doing that, but buying used for a game, especially one that isn't very popular that needs support, is a scummy feeling. I know I've bought a few VR titles that I was taking a risk on, but I want to support the platform.

there is NOTHING wrong with buying second hand. The first sale was more likely to happen in the first place because that person may of been influenced by the knowledge they could sell it on and so they benefit still. Also if they choose to sell their game psychically and not digitally only then the publishers have chosen that path.
