Started SW two days ago, At 11:25 I just cant select the inside face as a direction, any idea why that is? Edit: I can select it before the flex but not after, its like the face 1 ceases to exist, I cant even sketch on it Edit2: I made it "work" by putting a line in the middle of the ring as an axis, but once combined the parts are still separated by lines. So yeah I'd love for it to work your way

Sorry if it's no help, but did the Flex feature definitely only bend and not twist, and about the correct trim planes? If the face has no constant radius like in a twist or with wonky trim planes, solidworks won't use it as a radius, and it could explain the lines after combining it doing it your way. Also, really amazing thinking creating a separate axis to pattern around!

create reference axis by selecting two end faces of flex and then do a circular pattern
@meganhamer68612 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem. I did what you did with the axis but all six segments were separated by .04mm so couldn't be combined. Does anyone know why the face couldn't be selected as the direction for the circular pattern? Edit: I haven't figured out the face aspect, but to get rid of the gaps between segments, go back into flex - "edit feature", scroll to "Triad" and make all the XYZ values 0mm. Only type in the two 90 degree angle values for Y and Z.

@@meganhamer6861 I asked my teacher, he's never used the flex tool but he told me it should be impossible to use a flexed plane to make a circular axis as it is considered a plane, I really don't know how he did it in the video

OK, I was able to complete this model, and it looks great! My older version of SW (2015) was, at first, unable to scale down the model to finger-size, so I had to back up a few steps and do some things just a little differently, but in the end I had the same model, at the same size as yours, so all is good. If I saw a ring like this at a jewelers, I would definitely buy it (too bad a 3d printer would never be able to do it justice).

If you're watching from the future and get to 11:25, don't panic, just do exactly what he did. Type "flex" in full into the search bar and hit enter. Then you can edit the values. It worked perfectly for me after I failed plenty other times.

As much as it's a really cool project, there are some things newcomers should not do and things they should remember. Any fillet during the 1st stages of modelling will definitely cause error in any rollback(not that variable radius fillet in this model because it's essential early, but you get the idea) and it's a good practice to create models that you can easily rollback. At first it may make sense what you do(you show a lot of cool tricks and you keep track of what you do, don't do it chaotically), but in the long run it may and probably will lead to chaos and lost time by someone somewhere. For all beginners: I'm saying all of that because when prototyping, there is a lot of going back and forth with a model. You may have to change some of the early stages of the project. Having a model thats 100% "rollable backwards" or reverse engineerable is CRUCIAL to save time. Grouping stages in folders also REALLY helps to keep it clean. I had situations where I took over someones project to finish it/repair it or make it finally happen. I needed to make f.e. 2 or 3 versions of the same model. I had to work with models like that in the video that were only mildlyinfuriating, because they were to some extend reversable and there were just a few errors down the line. BUT, I was also sent projects so bad, that editing even a little thing in the tree resulted in whole model failing to rebuild. I'm not trying to hate anything here, it's quite good, tho there could be shown good pratices that would lead to overall better modeling Like I mentioned earlier, grouping "stages" of the build into folders really helps to keep track of every operation we make, I would also recommend to name operations accordingly, but that might be over the top. Avoid any cosmetic operations until you are done with the model, ask me how I know it(but really, don't).
@EasyCADSolutions3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, the modelling should be reverseable because it reduces the editing time and also grouping makes the model easier to understand And, It's an educational video to know the possibilities of Solidworks (not in a systematic way).But by practicing and learning we can perform better with our projects. There are also some paid courses which taught us how to use Solidworks professionally for your projects. Like, In Solidworks Certification Exams you should know how to create and assign variables which really helps to change the dimensions quickly without any errors and also saves time in the exam. I understand your point what you trying to convey Thanks for the valuable advice 🙏🏼 All the best for all your projects 👍 Stay Safe, Stay Healthy Happy Modelling 😊
