hi i am in the united states and i grow worms also mine are red wigglers. i have mine in a tote plastic container from walmart. i use peat moss for the dirt and feed mine food scraps and paper, coffee grounds, eggs shells, and tea bags they love it oh yes also the cardboard and news papers also. i really enjoy mine.

Ive kept worms for a season in an old cooler chest, but have never used the stacked bins. I understand that manure worms (as opposed to earthworms) climb up into the food bins as they fill the lower with their castings. It is for this reason you need a particular kind of worm - not just any will do. Thanks again Bill, as always. David South Carolina

Red wiggler worms are the worms most used in a stacked system, as they like to live in more surface level dirt. They are like half the size of the European nightcrawler which is probably the best bait worm. The Euro's can be found at any depth and for that reason many people have said they aren't good in a stacked system. However, there are people who have tested Euros in a stacked system and they found that the worms will still migrate to the top where food is. The only thing with a stacked system and Euros is that if you don't want to go sifting through the castings for worms, you need a lot more layers, or deeper bins. This allows the bottom layer to essentially becomes a food desert that isn't that appealing to the worms.

APPLEPIE978 thanks I have worms here that are leaf worms - not the wrigglers, aka, manure worms. I have found that if you keep the food near the top, with a piece of dampened carpet as covering, the worms stay quite close under it. You must leave and inch or two gap all around, so the worms won’t try to climb out. My favorite food for them are the rinds of melons - they will stay just beneath them, as long as the carpet is there.

@@dahutful interesting choice of worm, but I guess the worms depend on where you live. In my part of Canada, we can't get anything other than red wigglers, and Canadian nightcrawlers. We used to be able to get European nightcrawlers, but for some reason everyone's colonies either died or had really slow growth rates so nobody is willing to sell.

APPLEPIE978 I use them because they are free. As I work in the yard or garden, I capture whatever worms turn up and toss them in my “colony.” A few handfuls of the native leaf mold from whence they came goes in as well. By the end of the warm season I shift them to a bin system and keep them in my clôche. Come the new season in Spring, they have multiplied and I freshen their bins. I harden them for fishing by placing them in sawdust, damp pine straw, moss, the night before.

another great video bill, looks like little effort for the money saved. i generally dig a baitbox full of worms when i walk the dogs, i couldnt imagine buying them in the tackle shop, they grow in the ground haha, its like people dont realise it. have you ever tried waxworms bill? saw some in the pet shop the other day they look really good for fishing, mealworms too.

Saluki Hi look after your worms and when they start breeding you will have free bait on tap. Also worms are one of the best baits going and you will save loads of money as vegetable peelings and used tea bags are free. Tight Lines

Morning Bill hope your well,I have a question for you regarding the wormery. Mine is doing very well and already it's produced a tray of rather nice looking compost and some liquid feed which is really quite potent looking stuff which I diluted well and added to my shrub border. Now my question is regarding moisture in the wormery,apart from the initial soaking of the paper when you add another bin do you ever add extra water to the bins or do you just let the natural moisture in the teabags and peelings etc take care of it? Richard Aldridge Hi it’s good to hear your wormery is doing well. I just check mine once a week to make sure it’s not drying out as that can be fatal. Just make sure it’s damp but not over wet, if needed I just water lightly with a can of rain water through a can with a rose on the spout. Tight Lines

Hello Bill, You've really got me interested in having a wormery, I'm a Perch and Tench lover so I'm buying worms every outing and it's not cheap. Would you mind answering a couple of questions regarding your wormery, I was wondering if it's ok to be left out in the winter months as I don't have a shed and also what is the make of your setup as there seems to be a few around. Once last thing Bill,did it survive ok during the winter months? I'm learning a lot from your videos bill so be assured that your hard work is appreciated by a lot of people.👏👍

Richard Aldridge Hi of course I don’t mind. The workers is called a Worm Cafe and cost about £90 from Worms Direct whom I found on the Internet. It has survived the bad weather ok tho’ I did put a piece of insulation over it with a brick holding it away from the air vents as good ventilation is very important. My home made one I kept in the garden shed and is doing well, I could have kept it in a dustbin to protect it in the worst weather, which is what I would have done without a shed. I just wish I could breed lobworms! I don’t think anyone has managed that to date. Tight Lines

Hi Bill, enjoyed watching your wormer video, I have a purpose made one (a three tier round version, I think it was from Willy worms ) but I find a lot of worms escape from around the edges and also a lot end up in the bottom sump and usually rot in the liquid, do you have a similar problem?

Richard Aldridge Hi good morning. I don’t add lime and people do to regulate acidity. This is down to feeding to much of the wrong type of food so they add lime to re balance the ph levels. One of the best things to add is crushed egg shells and watch what you feed. Damp shredded corrugated cardboard is excellent and avoid overfeeding. Tight Lines

Richard Aldridge Hi well I don’t know but the bedding is what the worms eat so I don’t think they would eat the soil. I use farmyard manure, available from garden centres quite cheaply and I add food to that. You will find that the worms will digest that and turn it into high quality compost producing lots of liquid which diluted is a great plant food. Add shredded paper and corrugated cardboard which they seem to love. Tight Lines

Andy Metternich. Hi you are right castings are what they leave behind in solid form. But they also produce a lot of liquid ‘worm tea’ which is used as liquid fertiliser. Hence the tap to drain the liquid. Tight Lines

Ian Docksey Hi thanks for the nice comment. The amount you start your bin with depends on how much you want to spend and how quick you want to take a harvest. You can start with a handful or a couple of kilos which are fairly cheap on the Internet, about £20 a kilo. Remember the breeding cycle is between 30 and 60 days. Just treat them right and you will have happy breeding worms. Tight Lines
