Genius. A way to swap timing belts without a special tool: Stanley knife, slit down the entire length of the belt so you have a very narrow belt. Remarkably easy. Think about this: In CA, the cost to add a vapor recovery device to EACH pump at the gas station is $11,000 (mandated by CARB), which is passed down to the customers. With these devices in place, the pumps STILL drip liquid gasoline on the ground after each fueling!
@EasyFixShaunАй бұрын
You are right! The vapor recovery devices are not foolproof.
@CFRoachАй бұрын
I never thought about that! I drive classic cars and that whole setup is not compatible thus puking gas everywhere. When filling a motorcycle or older corvette that has the gas cap on top you have to shake the nozzle out onto the ground to ensure that your paint does not get drenched in gasoline. It makes me wonder if they actually do more harm than good. Quick somebody get the myth busters on this! Edit: You got me thinking: Another thing: They never changed the length of the nozzle, they only added the rubber jacket thing (foreskin) So now instead of the nozzle being 8 inches into the tank or filler neck, it's only in there a couple inches so that every time I fill my side tanks on my trucks upon full automatic shut off it always pukes out a couple ounces of gas down the side of my truck and onto the ground! If they made the nozzle tube longer to accommodate the C.A.R.B. Vapor recovery foreskin that would help a lot!

Install the new belt with the marks lining up with the marks on the engine, it will be perfect. Miami put Syracuse in a situation where knowing that they were leading they just had to run out the clock not they HAD to score because the game was tied. That puts Syracuse into a completely different strategy. They just had to run the game clock down, not try to score. What causes a timing belt to jump teeth? Ive got a 05 honda pilot that has a tight timing belt at the cams but when would crank the serpentine belt would move but the cams didnt. Is it possible my cams are seized? I have a camshaft position sensor p0340 engine code. Im worried i might have snapped a belt. But why would my belt still be tight and no signs of break at the cams?
@EasyFixShaun2 ай бұрын
When was the last time the belt was replaced? I have seen old belts sheer the teeth off like you are describing. It could also be from catastrophic damage. I would do some dissection surgery to see what happened. Good luck- hopefully it's just belt failure and no engine damage....🤞

@EasyFixShaun I'm pretty sure the last owners said they bought the car at 180k and shortly after they replaced the belt and its current miles are 272.7k miles. The cam sensor also came on at 4k rpms at 75 mph trying to pass someone on the freeway. There was no smoke or bangs or noises from what I heard. It just stuttered and died and wouldn't start. I bought the car 250k miles last year in November. It's been sitting since June, I haven't had the time to work on it.

Usually honda belts will go much farther than their rating (80k). I would bet its an aftermarket belt if teeth are striped with 90k ish miles on it.

Put in on right the first time, and make marks on the gears and backing plate before you remove it, and put the belt on and make sure the non tension side is tight before the pin is pulled from the tensioner
@paule7479Ай бұрын
By moving the gears aren't you misaligning them ?
@Daringskippy1Ай бұрын
A piece of cardboard or even a credit card works just as well, I would advise against rotating it the wrong direction though. It's not a huge deal on the Subaru EJ motors, but it can be a problem on other engines.

As a mechanic don't ever do this, for one it could damage the belt and tear the cords inside the belt for two if your engine is an interference engine you could potentially damage the valves. Just save yourself the hassle and loosen the tensioner and move the belt over a tooth.

This is a great mobile mechanic tip or a home mechanic tip. If I'm at a dealer the special tool will be in my box. I also did a 3.5 Chrysler Sebring using rubber 1/2 hose to hold tension on the belt so that when I released the tensioner it didn't just 2 teeth outta time. My mentor at the time said I was somewhat lucky because a few more teeth and I couldsla Bent valves as that is an interference engine.

Cool, but what position are the cams in now? Cause to see proper timing alignment you verify not only the crank but also that both upper and lower cams are aligned as well.

The trick only moves one tooth at a time on the given sprocket. All other sprockets will remain the same. I have a long form video on it with much more detail.

I tried this method countless times because I had a skimmed head, and the timing mark refused to line up. I was always one tooth out. Didn't realise a skimmed head would throw the timing so far off, or am I wrong ??? I did the timing the conventional way, and the mark would still be out by a tooth or more.
