Watching your videos is such a welcome change and a complement to textbook studying or using certain language learning apps (which are a huge upgrade to the books and have certainly great value in themselves, of course). Words in the dutch language have gender. Nou doubt you already know this. There is one word in the Russian language, as far as I am familiar with them off course, that I find exceptionally beautiful. It is the word for corn, кукуруза. This word is a poem in itself. It has a beautiful rhythm, like in a one-word song. Off course its gender is feminine. There are no masculine or neuter words that I find exceptionally beautiful. So let's choose окно for a neuter word, just because I hate it, because I keep mixing it up with the genitive and nominative plural. Finally, I'll choose товарищ for a masculine word, because if I am informed correctly, nobody uses this anymore and it was very common a few decades ago.

Товарищ is still used as a form of address in army and police, such as товарищ сержант, товарищ капитан, товарищ генерал and so on.

Since my goal is to learn to read Russian (somewhat, at least) and not to speak it, then it seemed to me worthwhile to learn grammar since you can see the inflections in the written words and thus pick up the syntax visually. I got curious about Russian while re-reading Solzhenitsyn about a year ago and I hope to be at a basic reading level with it in another year or so. I did watch part of one of your videos. Perhaps you're too imitative of Bald and Bankrupt.

I remember in the beginning it was exactly the genders that led me to plenty of problems. Very often in my first language (polish) we have different gender than the one used in Russian. For example we say PROBLEM (masc.) so I couldn't really understand why on earth do you say много проблем instead of много проблемов ;-)

Interesting that "book" is feminine in Russian and some other Slavic languages, whereas in most other European languages it is either masculine or neuter...

That is really interesting! In slavic languages the gender is defined by the form of the word, so the fact that the book in Russian ends in "а" makes it feminine. It might be the reason, why it different in slavic languages 🤔

Thanks for sharing! The video was very interesting and informative. In Spanish also words/ nouns have "gender" ( masculine, feminine, neutral) and number (singular and plural). The article must match the gender and the number of the noun, therefore, it is important to learn how to identify the gender and number of the nouns.

Some linguists think that gender not correct definition. Type system will be more correct name, but historically gender more used name for this. So if we use name type system we have nothing wrong with "dad" word when it is not related with any gender.

Правило про кофе устарело, у него два рода! В разговорной речи это слово можно употреблять также в среднем роде. Исключительность мужского рода для кофе - чистый прескриптивизм, каждое поколение русскоговорящих детей приходилось переучивать. Теперь можно этого не делать, средний род наконец узаконен и прописан в правилах.
