Just wanted to let everyone know I did this repair on a second gen ux31a and the LCD ribbon cable pulls straight up rather than pulling tabs towards the back. Secondly, I only started having the hinge issue after 3 years of heavy use. Lastly, I did the repair on both the left and right hinges. Worked great!

Not only was the video clear, the quality was excellent, but the detail you went into the video was very well done. I wish you would have spent more time on the left side with the WiFi antenna to really give that a good show since so many people have broken the cable. That side can also get loose from what I understand and can slide and slice the cable. It's really easy to fix with another piece of wire, some soldier, and heat shrink tubing to protect it. You may be tempted to splice the wire right where it broke, however, you need to be very careful because depending on the thickness of your replacement wire wire it may become too thick with the heat-shrink around it and not fit in the groove. So you may need to cut the wire above and below and splice it two times. Your new wire can then run through the groove because it's not extra bulky with the heat-shrink tubing.

Thanks for the great video, it helped me with my Asus Zenbook UX31e where the screen would fall open a bit. After following these steps it is now stronger. A few things I learned while doing this: 1) I went to two stores to get quotes. The average price to fix was $125 CAD. 2) My hinges were nowhere near as loose as those in the video, mine felt very tight, but I thought I'd try anyway. I followed the steps - squeezing as hard as I could with pliers on the hinges didn't feel like it was doing anything, but it seemed to work in the end. 3) The UX31e is slightly different than the model in the video. Mainly at 3:25 for the UX31e, you don't need tweezers and push towards yourself, you simply pull up on the black tab on top of that connector. 4) The two tiny wires he is talking about at 4:57 are fragile - I broke mine while trying to hammer the hinge back on (tight fit). They power the wifi antennas (which are inside the monitor) which I now need to figure out how to fix.

@DJWRailroad10 жыл бұрын
Folks, temporary at best. As with all metal parts whose "construction" has been compromised, where the metal has been "stressed" not once, but three times, 1) metal fatigue from repeatedly moving panel/hinge, 2) further metal fatigue from "reforming" the metal part, 3) repeating the stress on a very small metal part by once again opening and closing, this will occur again, sooner for some, later for others. However, this video should serve as one good bit of advice. Owners experiencing this problem can talk intelligently and knowledgeably with "bottom" tier support, which is who all owners communicate with initially, expediting your repair process.
@DJWRailroad10 жыл бұрын
***** We certainly understand, and acknowledged, your efforts but the integrity of the metal in the hinge has already been compromised prior to any further "corrective" modifications. By reshaping it (compressing it), no matter how slightly, that metal is being further fatigued or "stressed" resulting in further malleability or softening of the metal. Therefore, it will only fail again, only within a shorter time frame than the first failure. However, that wasn't my real point. Again, we appreciate your goals and worthy efforts. The point is that folks really need to write (as in good ole' "snail mail") to Asus senior management. Evidently, Asus doesn't seem to want to acknowledge this and a few other, long-time, chronic issues spanning more than one model year, despite the many comments on the many forums regarding identical issues, as well as numerous Asus support complaints. One commenter on one forum (Amazon) even caught, and documented, Asus denying any record of another known, wide-spread and long-time issue, with a huge plethora of forum complaints on that (and others) forum. While this may seem like an insignificant, minor issue, too minor for owners of this notebook to bother pursuing this up through C-level management, we find these common, ignored issues deplorable and unacceptable.

QUESTION: At 3:05, you say, "This is the MOST IMPORTANT PART"......then you proceed to use tweezers to remove a "ribbon cable". You don't say WHAT it is......or WHY you are removing it! A little "background information" might be helpful/interesting. What IS that cable.....and WHY are we removing it??

That cable connects the display panel to the motherboard, he probably disconnected it because the cable runs through the hinges.

on my zenbook ux303 the hinge is ok but the connection on the display plate seems to be loose. Any ideas how to fix this?
@yoner29818 жыл бұрын
no not the display function itself is the problem. the display cover is loose and wobbles around, like in your video. But when I disassemble the zenbook, the problem is not on the hinge like in your video. it seems to be inside at the connection to the display cover. Hidden in the long grey middle part. there is also a rattling sound there as if something is cracked and floating around. I don't know how to open this and if I can fix it after opening it

As someone noticed earlier this is a completely unrealistic video. In reality, it is very difficult to bring an element back. It is actually a bent spring that is difficult to keep open with some tools while being careful not to damage the cable from the screen. Much much heavier than in this video with an already very, very wide open spring.
