Never would have thought this was edible. I now have use for my 2 acres of "lawn" Still think tight fencing and 50-60 half starved sheep is a better answer. Maybe a dash of napalm. Fun video thanks for the info, I may try it in the morning if the air strike can't be called in. John.

PS: Seeds that are spread by animals are called zoochorous. Nice scrabbel word along with ruderal.

I think "torture" would be dragging someone nude through a field of sand spurs. By the way Port Canaveral has changed quite a lot. I used to fish on the north side of the port on the ocean. Now it is all restricted.

I aways thought a suitable torture would be dragging some one through a field of sandspurs naked.....

Thanks... sandspurs are a pain in the neck... though I have a slightly lower opinion of them, about three feet lower.... but they are tasty...
@EatTheWeeds15 жыл бұрын
Once I have the spines removed I just eat them husk and all. The flavor is better dehusked but it's a lot of work, yet it can be done.
@EatTheWeeds13 жыл бұрын
@Dashland13 Trouble? Just burn the spines off... how much trouble can that be? I've even burned them off with a match.

@FacetsOfTruth What do you think wheat is? And rice? Oats... Barley... et cetera?

When we bought our house in 1980, the lot was an acre of sandspurs. It took 20 years to get rid of them. NOW I find out they're edible! :D

A light, thin and inexpensive pair of needle nose plyers are absolutely excellent to put in the back pack in sandspur country.

First, sorry for the back-to-back comments, I accidentally posted before I was done. Secondly, I remember those spiny little bast--ds very well. While on liberty from Patrick AFB, I met up with my then GF and now wife at Port Canaveral Park for a cookout with her family. I remember getting dared to walk across the lawn barefoot. If only I knew then what I know now. That pain was second only to falling onto a Prickly Pear cactus (BTW, duct tape gets those broke-off spines out nicely). 5 *'s!!!!!

Thank you for your kind words... in total that's some 16 hours of me... heck ... even I don't spend 16 hours with me...that's a lot of tolerance and it is I who should thank you.

@2962nicktucker Sandspurs are a grass, and all the ones in Florida are grass like. It must be some other plant.

One of the aspects of living past childhood is discovering that we do things as adults we were absolutely were sure when we were kids we would never do... and the first time you admonish someone and you hear one of your parents talking you wonder what else from the past lurks inside your head.

If they are infected, which is rather obvious. Ergot is a fun or done.... best to avoid....

It grows on many grains, including wheat. Almost any grass can have it, though a few are immune, such as pendulous sedge...

Congrats on your 100th video =) Look forward to viewing your past vids, as I am a new sub. Sheesh, I remember as a child we use to have "wars" w/ those sandspurs, we'd pull 'em up, chase each other down and throw them at one another. Whe we tortured ourselves, I've no idea =) Feel kinda bad now knowing we were wasting a food source =(

Thank you Ranger Squirrel and all... I am as amazed as any one... but now I have to get serious...well... maybe...100 is a good base, nw it is time to wander a little but still stay in the edible foraging realm.

It the "Rocket Beach" part still open? I remember being called out there periodically for the AF when old rocket parts from the 1950's would wash up. On a sadder note, I also remember securing that beach when Challenger pieces washed up. I'll never forget that day.

Nah, sympathy should be expected when I have 99 musicals that I'm being forced to watch. Conversely, I get to watch 99 videos like this one. A treat, as it were (no pun intended), lol.

Growing up I HATED sandspurs! They were always getting in my socks and bootstrings. Its good to know I can get back at them by eating them ;) great video Deane!!

Does this fungal infection found on other grains? Or just the sandspur? That kind of freaked me out. Wait, I live in CO, one of the most arid places.

Are you telling me that I can eat some 'grass'? Who would have 'thunk it'? LOL I wonder if there are other grass seeds that we could eat as well? I have seen overgrown fields with long thin stalks just full of grass seeds. Are these also edible Deane, or just this 'grass'? By the way. I just love your videos. You are a fantastic teacher *and that is one who makes 'learning' more than just a desire, but a way of life. God bless you for sharing your gifts with us.

Has anybody else ever learned that if you lick your fingers first, you can pull them off your clothes without getting stuck. I was a PE teacher in Florida and did not believe it when my students told me. I don't know why it works, but it does.

@EatTheWeeds D'you know? I never thought of wheat, rice, oats or barley as 'grass' before. LOL I'm not sure 'Rye'. LOL You indeed are a witty guy. Sorry to be so dumb at times. I guess that's why we need good teachers. Not only to illuminate the nearly unreachable knowledge of the universe. But also to show us what's right beneath our very noses. Thanks for responding & for setting me straight. And I thought I needed 4 stomachs to eat this stuff. Hehehe And where does et cetera grow? Latinia?
