I’m from Jamaica 🇯🇲 and I used to eat the hibiscus flowers. Hibiscus sabdariffa known as Roselle and Jamaican sorrel is our Christmas drink. Okra is in the same family of hibiscus. I watch your podcast every week, and learn a lot from your program🌻🐝🐞🥦🥬🥒🫑

Hi Stacey and Rick. I've been watching your videos for a few months now (glad I found you) and have a number of Proven Winner plants in my gardens. They are mostly Hydrangeas. This episode brought back memories of the home I grew up in and the busy summers that flew by way too fast! My Mom canned tomatoes and sauce. We had a Quince shrub in the yard but it seldom put out fruit. We loved the flowers. About twenty years ago, at another house I owned with several Quince shrubs, I had a Baltimore Oriole come flying by. He would move from shrub to shrub, licking the pollen or 'juice' or whatever is in the blossom! It was the first spring I hadn't been working so if this ever occurred before none of us were home to witness it. Is this common for birds other than hummingbirds? Asking for a friend. 😉 Anyway, you've gained another subscriber who tries not to miss an episode; of this show or the one with Stacey and the other two brilliant ladies who give advice to gardeners that write in with questions. Your advice and suggestions are taken to heart. I'm a 67 year old USAF retiree with several health issues that prevent me from doing the things I used to when it comes to gardening. Perhaps you might consider doing a show about products other than raised beds that make the work easier for those of us who try to beat the challenges we face in the garden. By the way, I'm in zone 6b. Thank you for all you do! God bless! Pete

Nostalgia is such a sweet part of gardening 🥰 Your question made me curious, as I wasn't sure how many birds feed on nectar and it turns out quite a bit! Here's a link that lists them, sora.unm.edu/sites/default/files/journals/wb/v08n03/p0109-p0112.pdf Thank you so much! It's so lovely to hear that you enjoy and find our videos and show helpful 🤗 We will certainly talk about methods and equipment that can help make gardening less cumbersome ☺

I don't remember what the perceived or actual medicinal use is, but my parents have been growing rose of Sharon for years and they eat the flowers 😊

Hi there! Great show! I grow herbs in containers. Please discuss raised beds for edible gardens. I would never plant anything edible in my soil bc it’s contaminated with lead arsenic mercury etc. I’m in a suburban neighborhood but I would not trust my soil. Neither should you!

That certainly makes sense! Getting your soil tested is always a good thing to do so you know what you're working with and growing in!

Can you dry the petals for tea?

You can! Though this is not the species that is used in more common hibiscus tea, that would be Hibiscus sabdariffa 🙂

Someone stole one of my watermelons out of my garden last night. I only had 2. They took the biggest one. I'm totally bummed about it. It's my first time trying to grow watermelon. 🥺 I'm growing them in the front yard because that's the only place that gets full sun. So I guess they just thought it was a neighborhood garden.😢
