James, first of all Happy New Year! I'm watching this on 2 January! I've been to BA numerous times, the last being in 2018. This was before the horrible inflationary crisis began! Yes, today Ars1050 =$1! It's devastating for 95% of the population but great for tourists! Don't lose any sleep over NOT eating at Don Julio! It's extremely touristy with double the price of La Brigada steaks, limited menu, a lot of hype about "their beef"! Michelin ☆ is silly & out-of-place for Don Julio! Glad you ate at Parrilla Peña, I always enjoyed that restaurant! For me, Las Talas de Entrerriano gives you the best Argentina meat event! Enough said!
@Jamesnu Жыл бұрын
Thank you and Happy New Year! Yeah, the inflation is so crazy. Indeed, it's great for tourists, but I can't imagine living there with my savings in the bank losing so much value. I've heard similar things about Don Julio. I still want to check it out someday, but yeah, there are so many other great places for meat in the city.

Wonderful to experience an eating experience previously not shared but enjoyed by you sometime ago. Nicely done & enjoyable to watch. Forgive this long ago personal reference of my past travels. I was very lucky to have traveled extensively throughout Brazil in the late 1980's & I wish to share with you my good fortune of eating at numerous Sao Paulo steakhouses. While my memory may be faulty since my travel journals & notes have long been placed in storage, I remember the Sao Paulo Steakhouse named Bossi / Bassi which was among the best in South America. Your posting allowed me to unlock memories of the wonderful beef shared with business colleagues & dear friends of a past life era. Brazilians are/were very proud of the fact that their beef was/is "grass fed"; allowing for a richer flavor & hardy texture. Your video unlocked those memories for me. Thank you & Happy New Year! I was thinking the same thing. In Argentina, they are called chipas, but in NYC they’re mostly found in Brazilian restaurants as páo de queijo, and they can also be found frozen in some higher end supermarkets. The tapioca (or cassava or yucca or manioc or whatever name you prefer) gives the bread a beautiful almost mochi-like chew.
@amybutler9886 Жыл бұрын
Not an expert by any means, but it appears Argentinian beef cooking methods are different than ours. Meat is not put directly over the flame, and it is cooked more slowly with no sear and usually rare. So the steak here seems to be in the classic Argentinian style. It might also explain why your meal took longer to arrive. Wishing you well in your pursuits in 2024, James. I always enjoy your videos.

Don Julios is good but there are many Parrillas in Buenos Aires that are just as good, but cost half the price of Don Julio. My favorite restaurant is Parrilla de Peña. Order the double ribeye and you must order the bread pudding. Incredible. And what are already ridiculously cheap prices due to inflation, exchanging U.S. Dollars at the Blue Dollar rate, at Casa de Cambios, makes an amazing exchange rate even better. Notwithstanding how inexpensive and great steaks are in Argentina, you will be hard pressed to find on a wine list / order a great of bottle of wine that will cost more than $25-$30.

Yeah, sadly it doesn't work well with these types of steak. Personally I like my steaks on the rarer side of medium rare, so I'm a big fan of South American and Spanish beef which is traditionally cooked to be rare or blue. But it comes with the disadvantage that most of the fat doesn't render beyond the surface.
@nikip9161 Жыл бұрын
If the fat is well rendered, I believe it provides that much more glossy flavor to everything. This steak that he ate was a smidge undercooked for me, I'd rather have the outer a bit more well and the inner medium rare if I had to choose. I live in BA; I am glad you enjoyed La Brigada, but the place is far from being a top choice for any porteño. Don Julio is great but somewhat overrated if you ask me. I read a comment above about comparing Argentine steak to a steak in a good steakhouse in midtown Manhattan. The thing is that the comparison doesn't make sense. Different cooking methods, and we don't season steaks so much. Having said that, I prefer NYC steak! But the experience of an asado, when you taste other meats rather than just steak, is second to none in Argentina. That's what you need to try next time. I hope you had a great time in BA. BTW, that steak was way undercooked! I would have sent it back. The milanesa napolitana you had the night before looked great, but that was a lot of fried food for one person and the wine (Vasco Viejo) was definitely part of the reasons why you may have felt sick the day after 😄. Thanks James!

I think it was just to showcase how tender the steak was and it was very tender!

How much is 1487.00 Argentine pesos in American dollars? 👀
@Jamesnu Жыл бұрын
Six months ago when I went to the restaurant it was about $30, but today with inflation, it's much less.

If you exchange dollars at the blue Rate at any Casa Cambió then it’s about $15 U.S. I was there in 2022 when the official rate was about 180 pesos to the dollar but the Blue Rate was about 300. Now the Blue Rate is about 900 pesos to the dollar.

Fair enough. I do prefer my steaks to be a little more cooked, but it was still very good.

Greetings James, I enjoy your content and follow as a fellow foodie originally from the the East Coast and NYC. I had been wanting to suggest a couple of things for you and your content that may be of help. Your table etiquette as far silver ware usage and placement need some work, table manners such as eating bread needs some work, and I would suggest a modest manicure for yourself based on the filming you do. As a 67 year old male I can vouch for the value of manners and how we are judged by them and the difference it can make in our outings, relationships, group get togethers and being a guest. You have and express an air of sophistication and I think these small touches will make a big difference for you in life as whole. I will leave it to you to find out what I am referring to as I do not want to lecture you in public. I admire your ability to dine alone as that is something I do a lot and enjoy. Keep up the good work young man. Happy New Year.

I could easily drink 2 pints of vodka in 2 hours and be fine....and I still dont know why people eat good food AND drink alcohol at the same time. If Im eating great food Im not ruining it by getting buzzed. To each their own I guess.
@Jamesnu Жыл бұрын
I don't think I could drink that much vodka. For me it's about balance. I like drinking enough to quench my thirst, but also for the feeling. Still, sometimes I can go a bit overboard when I'm eating.

the amount of ignorance in the comments. argentina is a country with deep serious and chronic problems. many argentinians with money and skills or entitlement to other passports have fled abroad. poverty is endemic which means that crime is likely to soar. public services are crumbling. its truly absurd to highlight it as a retirement destination for americans (mexico is much better).
