I eat at and review the two course $39 lunch prix-fixe menu at Porter House Bar and Grill in Midtown Manhattan of New York City. One of the options on the menu is a course of steak frites. As a result, Porter House may just offer one of the best steak deals in NYC. For $10 extra dollars, you can even add on a dessert to your meal. The restaurant is also beautiful, as it’s perched four stories above Columbus Circle and provides great views.

I’ve been to Austria too. When I lived in London. Loved Vienna. Went to the Seccession Museum too. Gustav Klimt’s work is in there. Was so amazing to see! Big fan of his paintings. Loved all the coffee houses. Some had live music playing. Classical music. Great hot chocolate too!

Excellent vid as always. Just back from lunch here in central Paris. I had a piece of rump steak, mixed sallad leafs, roasted potatoes, and bearnaise sauce. Tapp water, bread from the baker next door. Afterwards I had a coffee with a complementary chocolate praline. 17,60€ I payed.

Adding this to my list! I love the lunch deals at these restaurants, but just like you, I always end up spending way more. Went to Gallaghers for their $32 lunch special, and my bill with tax and tip ended up being $175. Of course, I had a cocktail, lamb chop upgrade, and 2 glasses of wine for my meal. Yes, I fell for their $32 gimick LOL! I did enjoy the meal, but it was far from $32!!!

As I get older, I find myself eating smaller steaks - Steak Frites is a primary staple for me. Although I still crave a 32-ounce bone-in ribeye, my apetite has gotten less. I have found, like you, that steakhouses tend to overcook the smaller, thinner sirloin cuts. Great to hear it still was up to par on taste! Great job as always!

Hello James. I have visited this restaurant a few times when i have been in New York. The last time was for a wedding anniversary. I must say that we had a fantastic experience there and the food and complementary glass of wine was amazing. The New York strip was to die for. Have to say I would have been willing to wait for the waiter by just munching on the fries for a medium rare steak, that was too over cooked. Clearly you enjoyed it so they must use top quality meat. It really looked like a tasty meal for $39.00, but we seem to have a problem here in the states with overcharging for wine. I came across Porter House on Instagram but wasn't sure so I just skipped and stuck to Bar Boulud, which was my safe option for a casual atmosphere.I have to the say that the $39 lunch special is a very nice deal especially when they include Branzino in the selection too.

I don't pretend to be a "expert", but I visually could tell that the steak offered was NOT your usually requested "medium rare". However, this review was enjoyable & appreciated. The food & venue is worthy of your praise & I agree with your assessment. While I rarely am interested in desserts since I personally "get fat" eating "seconds" of EVERYTHING ELSE rather than a dessert, your cheesecake was "picture perfect" and had the appearance of what a slice of NY cheesecake should look like!!!!! You get what you pay for. Usually. You can tell they cut back to fit the price point. It’s all about making a profit still. Even a little. That’s what I don’t like about specials. They will always pull back. Also, as we all know, it’s the alcoholic drinks and desserts that they really make a killing on. Always lots of profit in those areas. I had this feeling while watching this that it just wasn’t enough food for you. Knowing you have a BIG appetite!

Good review, I like the reference to the book, at least youve shown you are not only a "eater". The thing with this kind of steak is they are very thin, its almost impossible to have a medium rare amd a nice burn color on the outside. You can have your cake and eat it, I guess.

This is a common problem. I actually prefer medium, but usually order medium-rare and what I actually get is typically medium to medium-well. So many restaurants just overcook every steak, and I'd rather risk a small chance of it coming out too rare than a sizable chance of it coming out mostly gray.

First love the haircut it’s very flattering on you. Steak looked delicious but wow these prices are another level and I live in San Francisco so not much shocks. The New York attitude stayed in Austria which is not a bad thing. If they offer a special to get people in the door and want to return a steak that thin needs to be cooked properly.

Thats a thin steak. Really hard to get a good sear and still be medium rare

Yeah, I’d say for a steak that thin, the doneness is about as medium rare as you can hope for with a solid sear.

For me, this video feels like a cautionary tale about steakhouse deals. Nothing particularly wrong with the food/ atmosphere etc but this doesn't look like the quality of food I'd expect at a high end steakhouse. Rather it looks like something you might get at a decent cafeteria. The only thing actually requiring cooking to order was that steak and it was the one thing that they bombed. I could do that entire meal quite easily at home. I suppose with the high cost of prime beef, steakhouses can't include the good stuff in deals. I definitely wouldn't make it a point to go to experience PorterHouse in this way.

$49 not $39 lunch - remember the cheesecake. Buy a wonderful cut of meat- say on sale during the holidays- like a rib roast at a supermarket and cut it up into huge individual rib steaks. You could get four or five ribs at the price of $50. Then with a bit of care and preparation give yourself a superb four or five course home cooked dinner.

Yeah, you'll always get better value outside of a restaurant, but I also appreciate the restaurant experience.

Sort of my issue with this “deal”. Your not getting the one thing you can’t do at home ie a steakhouse prime cut cooked in a high heat grill/ oven. The appetiser and desert can be bought off the shelf from any grocery store.

The steak was overcooked. I would have stopped eating it and sent it back. I have eaten there. Best to go for drinks before dinner and watch the sun set over the park. Vienna is a great town, but friendly? 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, I bet this restaurant would be great in the evening. For the most part, everyone was friendly to me in Austria.
