I live right near this place, and go there frequently. The donuts are made fresh in the morning (there is a mad dash for them early), but it is the sandwiches at lunch (that include chips, a pickle and a dessert), fresh house-made breads, cakes (birthday and others), plus a ton of other confections that are the stars here. Also, the Boston Creme doughnut is good, but their fresh buttercream injected doughnut is what they are locally known for, and it is ridiculously decadent. Some of the older staff can be a little abrasive, but the owner, and the mix of high school kids and older employees are friendly, and give great conversation and service. We love this place, and I hope they can try to convey to new customers what the old ones already know.

Being Japanese, I’ve always understood the quality of service as being as, if not more, crucial than the food. I understand cultures are different and I wouldn’t drop a 5-star rating to a 1-star for abrasive staff, but I also understand why reviewers would feel that way. THAT SAID, I’ve also seen how American customers behave so I can also understand why servers can develop attitudes. I used to be so confused by the tipping culture in America (it’s very unique in the world), but after seeing the abuse customers regularly throw at people working an honest job, I can see how money can be the only reason to smile and say thank you.
@PalmelaHanderson2 жыл бұрын
I've worked in the service industry for a long time. One thing I learned very quickly - You can have the best food in the world, but if your service sucks, people won't come back. On the other hand, you can have food that's just 'okay,' but if you have excellent service, people will come back. The problem is service (in an ideal situation) is much more volatile than food. Everyone has bad days. Sometimes you're down a person. Sometimes there's technical issues going on with the POS or whatever. There could be any number of things that affect the service which customers generally don't see. My favorite complaint is the "I don't know why my food took so long, it wasn't even busy!" complaint. It may not LOOK busy to you, but there could be all kinds of stuff happening behind the scenes which the customer never sees. Things could just be going wrong that day.
@ringo84102 жыл бұрын
This is why I don't usually take Yelp reviews at face value. You never know if a spot is having an off day, a particular employee is having a bad day or just have a bad attitude, etc. Yelp reviewers tend to focus on one thing and give bad reviews for petty reasons, which is why the "worst" spots are often not that bad at all.

Nah, fam. These ridiculous days of inflation mean our “hard-earned money” is that much more precious and can’t be wasted on mom & pops who don’t appreciate your choice of their establishments. None of the reviews you read gave 1 star without explaining the food was good (except that cheesecake one); they specified their issue was with the service. If that’s of utmost importance to customers, that’s what they should judge the business by. Tone policing reviews is a bad look, Daym. Other potential customers can decide for themselves if they want to get good food with craptacular service or not. *Multiple reviews* highlighting employees with attitude _isn’t a one-off occurrence_ or a random bad day for an employee. That’s the _culture_ of the establishment. It’s not too much to ask of small businesses that if they want our patronage over the big chains (which are cheaper, most times), they’re going to have to set themselves apart. Consistently good customer interactions is the easiest way to do that.

Well said! Ive noticed cancel culture has taken over yelp. Someone will find out a shop owner has different world views/religious views than they do, and they put out a hit on the establishment. Most of these one star reviews have literally never even been to the place! They just make it up. They do it to give the owners a one star review to try to destroy their business, and it’s really sick and messed up of them.. Thank you for calling people out to be honest. I hope it is taken seriously, before more Resteraunt owners are put out of business for no reason…

Here is the thing about customer service. While it is very important that you should maintain a Professional Attitute within the workplace, regardless of any personal things going on in your life. Sometimes things happen, and we as the customer should be reasonable that somethings can't just be "SWITCHED off", for all we know a worker can be dealing with their family member being sick with that knowlege while at work. I remmeber when i was working at gtame stop years ago, the same day we had a rush on Duke nukem forever was the same day my mom got diagnosed with stage 3 Thyroid cancer. it wasn't my best performance that day, but i had to go to work. the day you could have gone to a place and experianced bad customer service, might have been the day that wasn't normal for that person. just always remember that.

Been in food management for many years now. While I agree service should separate, a restaurant is an experience, and food is just part of it. Service, atmosphere(decor), cleanliness, and food are the four main factors. With the increase in food delivery, most places are based solely on food now, as that has outweighed most, however a customer will always remember having bad service over bad food. Bad food(once), they will typically think maybe it’s an off day if it isn’t horrible, but bad service will always make people not come back because it’s an actual face they see. My suggestion is pair yelp with the four segments, and judge from there. I’ve ordered from places that have bad yelp ratings but I do delivery, and the food is better than anything else in my area by far. Also, food doesn’t have the bias that people receive. Good is either good or not, people often interpret behavior as rude or condescending when it’s just someone not smiling, or it also depends on how that person is feeling at the time(customer). I’ve had servers that are consenten, know the menu by heart, always make sure guests are taken care of and communicates and apologizes, etc. however, because they aren’t as “cheerful” as others, they often get less tips or some say she is rude, even when I’ve observed her the whole time. I’m a direct person, and that is often perceived as rude because people aren’t accustomed to that. Perception is everything, and unfortunately it leads to emotions which lead to bad reviews. Most people probably think leaving a bad review will show them, when in reality it isn’t any communication we can use to assist. How we are rude helps, but saying someone is just rude doesn’t help. P.s. the best bakery places are the ones that don’t have specified hours, but close when they run out.
@KatieHuni2 жыл бұрын
It's not that customer service is all important but the reviews that daym read they kept on saying rude stuff to the staff and it doesn't help them get better just by being rude back, instead they should just talk about other stuff instead of throwing a tantrum on the staff
