I have bulimia and I can’t tell you how much it’s a struggle to get better I’m so obsessed with my weight even a pound over on the scale would cause severe anxiety and ruin my whole day. I’m in therapy and treatment with a psychiatrist. I cannot tell you how hard this is. I’m pushing it day by day to try to get better and I pray to God that I’m able to overcome this.

I am 59, in a month. I have anorexia since I was very young. I’ve never been hospitalized but always was on the edge …. My parents didn’t seem to notice, I’ve started by cutting meat , and the carbs and eventually almost everything besides carrots and my moms laxatives. Of course I was also exercising a lot, wrapping plastic sheets in my legs to burn even more fat…. I don’t show any trates of ocd , but for me, as a very veteran restricter, it’s always been about a sense of control and superiority. Look , I can go without food!! I don’t need it, I’m above it… I’ve always felt like testing my limits and see how much can I punish my tiny body until it broke. But it doesn’t, and I’m still here, restricting all my life but in time the restrictions grew… Like a profound feeling of being just a nuisance for my husband and two daughters. Being a parasite for not wanting, or rather, being terrified at the idea of having to go to work everyday….. I’ve lost my parents to cancer, in two months they were gone…. I was 25, and at 33 I’ve lost my only brother, from cancer also. It should have me at least try to stop, but, I still restrict when I feel I’ve reached some certain weight or look. I like to look as if I’m sick and underweight. I enjoy the comments though I say that they annoy me….. I do take anti depression pills for years now, just to make me want to eat and shower and function, because there were times I didn’t for days on…. Anyway, I’m so fucked up i guess I’ve just learned over the years to sustain. And nobody knows how deeply and honestly I can hate myself, be angry at myself and punish myself.

Coming from someone who suffered from typical and atypical anorexia at different times, this video is fairly accurate. The only thing I would say is not correct is the BMI requirement as people that suffer from anorexia are not always severely underweight although still are under weight but not so severe they need too be hospitalized. Like I said I have suffered from both types of anorexia and bullimia. I was actually the sickest when my weight was very low but not life threatening. I have weighed as little as 75 pounds and up too 140 pounds at 5’8 inches. I think that the BMI requirement for anorexia should be removed.

(Background: I used to have an ED and got a lot of help for it including a support group in the 90s, and have now been in a normal wt range for a long time.) I would be cautious telling patients that someone only has anorexia (or a serious problem with restriction) only after a certain low weight qualifying cutoff point. This may make other starving patients think they "aren't that bad" or even may make them restrict harder. Also...how do MDs think a person gets that low? They start the *behavior* long beforehand while still appearing normal, and by the time the weight reaches the arbitrary low point, the behavior may be entrenched and hard to change. I know this video is probably for test prep, but restrictive ED behaviors can start long before the weight change shows up. It's better to try and catch them sooner of course. (Edited for clarity)

I 100% agree. I am physically unable to be underweight due to genetics. like it'll never happen. But I starved myself from the ages of 16-21 to a point where it was all consuming and all I could think about. All to be told I was never anorexic. Bs.

Always joked about being so skinny but after watching this video I think I genuinely have anorexia (which makes sense as I have OCD as well). I related to quite literally everything you said about the disorder. Thank you for making this video man... I gotta do something about this.

I've been diagnosed, at varying stages of my life, with anorexia, bulimia, and EDNOS. I think it's a huge misconception that anorexics think they're fat or overweight - many of us (although not all) KNOW that we're underweight, and many anorexics are actually insecure about being too skinny, and yet we can't stop trying to lose weight. Everyone has been fed this dogma that anorexia is caused by diet culture or societal standards of beauty - so if I know I'm underweight and that I look sick and tired and that continuing to lose weight will make me LESS attractive, why continue, right? But I did. I still do. I think doctors need to be looking into WHY. I don't want to lose weight because I think I'm fat, or to be more attractive, or to look like a certain model or whatever. I want to look like I'm dying. A lot of anorexics have this fantasy of transcendence that I can only describe as spiritual. Dissolving, disappearing, being somewhere other than this world, going to some ethereal place where there's no more death or pain or war or suffering. A sort of heaven or nirvana - and it's interesting that fasting will biologically trigger a sort of meditative state. That feeling of leaving this world and being someplace else is much more motivating to me in sustaining a fast than weight loss alone, although that definitely plays a role. Our bodies feel like confinement, like a prison. There's also such a correlation between EDs and sexual assault/molestation, particularly during childhood, and I've always thought of starving myself as a type of vandalism. Arson. My body belongs to you? Fine, watch me destroy it. Lastly, it annoys me to no end that anorexia is (even medically) thought of as primarily a woman's disease. Statistics reflect that because obviously, statistics only reflect the cases that are diagnosed. But most of the ED sufferers I know are either cisgender (often but not always queer) men, or trans people, particularly transmasculine people. Of the dozens of people I know with EDs, only two are straight, cisgender women. The rest fall under the queer umbrella, and most identify as more masculine than feminine, regardless of assigned sex at birth. I myself am transmasculine, and I used starving myself as a way to intentionally stunt the onset of female puberty, and then later on as an adult to reduce my secondary sex characteristics, and that, I find, is quite a common theme. Many transfeminine people will also starve themselves for the same effect in reverse. These cases are often overlooked, because if you're not a straight, cisgender woman trying to look like a magazine cover, then clearly you can't have anorexia. Most of my AMAB or transmasculine friends never receive a clinical diagnosis - my one friend actually suffered heart failure before they were ever diagnosed (they lived), and when they were diagnosed they were already on the brink of getting a feeding tube. My (straight, cisgender male) ex was at one point so underweight and malnourished that he couldn't stand unassisted for more than a few minutes at a time, and he told me it hurt to walk, and yet he was never diagnosed with any type of ED. Anyway, I just hope the medical profession starts to uncover what eating disorders are actually about and how complex they are - the whole "I need to lose weight to be pretty" discourse is old and soggy and wasn't relevant to begin with.

An ED affect a person not because she/he has seen an image on Internet and she want to be more thinner… it all starts with a disperception of the body that make you think that you are obese, but this isn’t the real problem because the food is only a way to demonstrate a problem that you have. So the ED is a way to comunicate a problem that you have inside you, like anxiety, fears, or some childhood problems that make you feel very bad. It is very difficult to destroy because it doesn’t consist only in “EAT!”, you have to do a very long and hard therapy to discover your real problem that has caused the ED or other problems.

Funny fact, many women don't want to be skinny, the want to be toned. I had anorexia for 3 years, but when I started swimming in the national team of my country, I was happy. Also eventually I move out of my country, stop the toxic relationship with my father the narcissist and I just learned to give a f*ck if I was fat. Today I look at pictures when I was young and I can't believe how skinny I was. Today I have chronic pain, some surgeries and got weight. I was telling somebody my 13 yo me would be very disappointed to know im size 31 and not the 25-24 I always was for many years 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

This video is inaccurate in alot of ways and needs too be undated or removed because the inaccuracies may cause harm to people with eating disorders in treatment may be delayed cause patients may not think they suffer from a eating disorder simply based on there BMI , when in fact they may be very Ill even if there weight appears normal

ive had a mix of everything for half my life and im 31.. Restricting and Excessive exercising during my mid to early 20s (no matter how much weight i lost it was never enough). binging and purging throughout my 20s. and periods of purging regular meals in my mid to late 20s. since im a guy, people (especially Doctors) don’t take us seriously. i’ve gone lots of times over the years. over the last 5 years the purging has got to the point where i can do it on command without much force. it’s scary.
