What a superb, delicious array of fruits and vegetables you have been able to grow and eat through last year, thanks to a lot of of dedication and hard work. But you are absolutely right, there is no need to punish yourself into being perfect at growing everything. Better choose your battles and enjoy growing what you really appreciate and make the most of collaborating with your neighbours.

I adored this video and so did my kids (5 & 7)! It's dreary here in Portland, Oregon, USA and this was inspiring because you reminded me to move with the seasons. It makes me feel better that we're getting just kale and tree collards from our urban backyard garden right now! I also loved that you talked about relying on community for your resiliency and not just focusing on self-sufficiency. That seems both wise and kind to yourself! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!

Harriet, Of the homesteaders I watch in the U.S.A, this point about being not being able to be 100% sustainable seems to be a common thread lately. However if anyone could get close it would be you! Besides all your other accomplishments I cannot believe the amount of produce you grew!!! The videos you produce are inspirational, educational, beautiful and entertaining. It's so good of you both to encourage this way of living to as many people as possible. Stay well.

Wow what an accomplishment for your “Challenge“ to not become a challenge anymore but to have it be a way of life! Definitely something to be proud of! And I totally agree about not striving for 100% self sufficiency. It takes away from the importance of community and supporting those around us. We as human beings were meant to be part of tight knit communities where we all come together to support each other. I love how much you have been doing this with your friends and neighbours, it’s very inspirational. No one can do it all but all as one we can 🥰

Your harvest baskets look so fresh, colourful and tasty. You compose your greens and fruits and veggies to a living picture of garden art and this is also valid for the dishes. Have you thought about printing and selling the images a poster or a calendar? Of course I would rather take the content of the basket than a paper version ;-) Now I am hungry after watching and definitly need an orange juice at least... Thanks for this inspiring compilation, have a sunny and fruitful winter season 2023!

Congratulations on more than meeting your challenge! What a satisfying feeling it must be. Being part of a barter economy is definitely a great way of being self sufficient. You’re right that self-sufficiency doesn’t have to mean that you yourself produce everything you consume - as you found, that’s not practical or ideal in many cases. It’s about not having to depend on global supply chains, big chain stores, and lots of shipping in order to eat, and you’ve certainly achieved that.

I believe we are each here to help each other, serve each other and share our bounties with each other; it’s rewarding to exchange or to gift your harvest to others, it’s a lovely way to live. Keep doing what you’ve realized is good for you! May this year be even more of a learning experience all around your beautiful home and may your journey bring the joy of your life within your family. Wow, you two should be so proud of yourselves. Y'all created a wonderful year!. I have been very impressed. The layout of everything seems so welcoming. You even got the attention of your local paper, that is awesome. I would love to have neighbors like you & Mario. Are you two thinking of starting any businesses other than you tube from the homestead? I can see you making goats milk soap one day. It's a big seller here in the U.S. Veggies boxes, so many ways to make money to help pay for the materials you need to get things the way you want. You two are truly an inspiration. I may be in Texas, but I tell everybody about Little Spanish Farmstead. Looking forward to seeing the vision you have for the coming year! All the best & God bless

Great video! What you say about not being totally self sufficient is very true. Not even our Ancestors were. I’ve been growing food, flowers and medicine for decades and will never be self sufficient. There are just too many variables that are out of our control. Weather, pests, health. Playing to your strengths and supporting your health are wonderful things.

WORDS WELL SAID, DO WHAT MAKES US HAPPY, THATS THE KEY. ENJOY YOUR YOUTH. I WISH I HAD SPENT MORE OF MY YEARS TENDING TO A GARDEN. NOW IM ALMOST TOO OLD TO DO THAT, AND ITS A BUMMER. What an action packed year! I imagine it would be hard to sustain that level of intensity in the long run so outsourcing some aspects sounds like a smart move - having a bit of a "life" outside of homesteading never hurts either. Looking forward to see how 2023 shapes up - keep up the good work.

This is my favorite video so far. Maybe a challenge for this year take a picture of one meal a day and list ingredients and method( these would be great for youtube shorts. This would give you a recipe book with a little winter time editing to sell next year. Personally I’m really interested in how you gather from the garden and then prepare. Like you say in your video, what you thought was important at the beginning of last year didn’t seem so important now. You are on the cutting edge of how to transition from city life to country life, and you seem to have a simple a clear ability to communicate how and what you are doing. Thank you for your devotion to sharing with us, especially the stuff that doesn’t always go as you want.
